NOW THEY TELL ME?

I don't know. I was the most ardent defender of the small phones but my 4S was too old and too slow so I got the 6S and I gotta say - the phone is too big but that bigger screen is SUPER nice. I would like the physical size of the smaller but it might be hard to give up that bigger screen so I am left leaning toward that bigger screen.

Bundled with Chinese translator for 2016 Keynote. I forgot how light the 4 incher is after I viewed some vacation photos on my friend's 5S. My 6S feels a tad heavy now. Quite a few people have been waiting for this. If it does emerge, let's hope they don't cripple it. People wanting larger real estate will go for the bigger screen anyway while the 4 inch fence sitters will upgrade once a beloved upgradeable 4 inch screen modal comes along. Rather than dilute sales, it could do the opposite. Have to wait and see.

I want to hang out with the people who make this stuff up and pass it online to feed the crazies. 3gb of ram. lol Right. Not a flippin' chance that's going to happen.

After all my deliberations about wanting to keep 4" phones, I've come to the conclusion that it's not the screen size that I had a problem with, it's the physical dimensions of the phone itself.

If Apple can fit a 4.7" display into roughly the dimensions of the 5S I'd be very, very happy.

This. Can. Happen. See the Sony Xperia Compact series. The compact keeps most all of the premium features (lower resolution screen, still 319 ppi and 2GB vs 3GB of RAM) and all of the functionality of the larger 2 Xperia models. The compact has a 4.6" screen with very similar physical dimensions as the 5S. Apple just needs to lose the damn home button and shrink the bezels. It would not be that difficult for them to do.

And while they're at it, stop the race to have the thinnest phone out there and give us bigger batteries. No one would mind trading a little thickness for a significant bump in battery life.. I won't go into the stupid protruding camera..

There is already a 4" device with "iPhone 6 performance" and it's called the iPhone 5s

However there is no 4" screen device with iPhone 6s performance so if this new 4" phone turns out be real, and matches all the features of the 6s as well, it should make for a solid update though outside of Apple Pay I am not sure what the purpose of updating the 5s is. I'm sure it will be supported just as long as the 6.
You are joking, right? The 5s has a lower-grade processor, 4 hours less of talk time, fewer video features and no ac Wi-Fi amongst other things.

4 inches is way to small theses days and so is having 16gb of storage
That's called personal preference. I personally think 4.7 is way too big and know at least 5 people who said they will revert from 6/6s form to a 4-inch should Apple produce it.

And those people can be laughed at with their miniature sized phones when the average person is carrying around a phone between 4.7-5.5"

Considering tha only thirty-something percent of iPhone users have upgraded to the 6S/6S Plus devices, it makes a lot of sense, I believe. Many people have older models (several 3GSs are still visible in the wild these days), and clearly do not feel encouraged to purchase the latest models.

So, in order to keep up growing, it is only sensible that Apple will go after these laggard iPhone users, since stealing Android users can only get them so far.

If this is true, it's a cool move.

Performance wise? As per the post I was responding to?

I don't think you realize how similar the A7 and A8 are in processing power. The CPU almost identical; it's just as wide and have the exact same L1-L3 cache. The Gpu has improvements but I've been hard pressed to find high end games that really take advantage of the A8 over the A7.

And they (5s, 6) use the exact same type of ram.

Cpu, gpu and ram are the main factors in processing power, and the A7 and A8 are comparable chips. A8 was often referred to as an "enhanced" cyclone for a reason.

The main benefits of the 6 over the 5s was the larger screen size, longer battery life and Apple Pay. Wifi ac is nice and a good speed jump over wifi n but has nothing to do with processing power, and doesn't work unless you have a router that supports wifi ac and an Internet plan that offers the bandwidth necessary to take advantage of the faster speeds.

But processing power? I know what I'm talking about; do you know what you're talking about?

This is a really good thing. Some people just want a 4" phone. They shouldn't be punished because of it.

My wife flat out does not want to upgrade from her 5s because she doesn't want the size of the 6. That's just how she feels. But its unfair that she continues to have nothing to upgrade to, and misses out on 3D touch, camera improvements, ApplePay, etc.etc.etc.

I'm a fan of options. I'll be getting the larger versions, but I know several people who would love a newer 4 inch model!
Doesn't seem like this would be newer. If this 'happens' the tech would be running 1 to 2 years behind the current iPhones flag ship models.

And we can laugh at those who are carrying around oversized giant phones :)

More seriously, screen size is a personal subjective thing. Bigger screen are not equal to better for every circumstance.

A smaller iPhone with limited specs would be the final stab in the back of some Apple lovers. I can see them bleeding.
What are you blabbering about. They currently offer a 4" iPhone with "limited specs" by comparison to the other models...it is called the iPhone 5s.

Apple sees the value in the 4" class, and will eventually update it accordingly.

Should AppleWatch 38mm be slower, not have forcetouch, and have less memory than 42mm Apple Watch? Heck no. Different sizes fit different people, and they shouldn't be penalized for this if it's technically possible to achieve parity.

Apple please make a 4" that's on par with 4.7". Please :(

Best post in this thread!!!

Interesting concept of punishment and unfairness. I like big screens so I stayed away from the iPhone until they built them. I didn't think it was unfair of Apple.

it'd be nice if they wouldn't penalize people who like smaller form factors by removing functionality & power.

If a user has an iPad Air 2 for a couple years, and realizes the mini would be a more convenient and useful size for them, they're going to eat hundreds dollars on depreciation getting rid of their Air 2, only to spend a load of $ on a smaller iPad that has... the same hardware as an Air 2. Result is paying maximum money for a new device, and getting last years hardware for it, only smaller. Tough sell.

Agree it shouldn't be "last years hardware", but smaller form factors will typically always have less functionality and/or power simply due to space constraints and a higher TDP.

At 4" they hit the sweet spot of size vs. usability. Everything larger is more difficult to use. That is not saying larger is bad, but fundamentally requires more effort on the part of the user. Some people are OK with that. I've had a 6+ and now a 6s. I'm OK with it. Not everyone is.

They really should not abandon the 4" size.
