On the other hand, a lower cost iPhone would hit the spot. My 3GS still rocks and I don't really need all the performance of 6S so a slightly slower, smaller model would be great for upgrade time.

You are still on 3GS?
Get on the Time Machine ...

I don't really believe these predictions, but as an iPhone 6 and 6S owner, who has no intention of buying a 5.5" or larger screen I will be severely bent if Apple puts more RAM in the large phone than the 4.7" model. My phone is no less "flagship" because I have no need or desire for a huge screen, and the huge size that goes with it.

"new 4-inch iPhone will not include 3D Touch support as part of an effort to keep it differentiated from the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus."

That would be just completely stupid. There is no reason to differentiate capabilities between the different screen size options.

And what's with the limitation to 2 or 3 GB RAM in iPhone 7? Shouldn't they be using 3D memory chips by then?

This is awesome. Some people just want a decent, cheap smartphone without all the fancy features. And a smaller phone is a lot more comfortable to hold. If you're not stuck to your phone all day, a big screen is just extra size and weight that you've paid more for. Nowadays you just can't get a cheap iPhone. What if you just want the basic features and for it to "just work"? My iPhone 4S is a great phone running on iOS 7, but officially you can't buy that anymore and even if you did, it would probably come with iOS 8 or 9 that isn't really compatible with it without the possibility to downgrade.

Back in the day before smartphones, you had a range of options from Nokia for example. You had the cheapest phone they did with a tiny screen and basic functions, but it ran well, it wasn't laggy and it worked fine for what it did. Then you had expensive color screen versions with better cameras and whatever. They were great too. You just had good phones with various capabilities at a range of prices.

Now you get to choose between the best and most expensive phone ever, or some laggy slow 3 year-old model that isn't even allowed to use the operating system it was designed for. But there isn't a dedicated low end model. The iPhone 5c tried to be that, but somehow failed, probably because it wasn't cheaper.

Also why are phones just getting bigger? Why not keep the small versions around too? I like being able to fit it into my pocket and hand, a

An iPhone 6c with iPhone 4s-like design and features but actually able to officially run a modern version of iOS without being unusable would be great, and it sounds like this is what they have in mind.

Or, Apple could just keep signing iOS 7. That would work too. It would be better for everyone but apparently that can't be done because the planned obsolescence fairy put a curse on it or something.

It only took them one year to go from 1GB to 2GB right? I'm disappointed that my 6 plus is starting to stutter and lag after less than a year, it could have used the 2GB from the start. I agree they'll keep force touch in any new phones they release, though its hard to imagine a separate release event, if it happens it'll be with the other iPhones next September.

You should take your phone in and have it looked at and fixed. My 6 has no stuttering or lag. And that's with a lot of apps running. An extra gig of RAM would make absolutely no difference.

Seriously, there's something amiss with your phone. Just bing it in and have it fixed. Easy peasy...

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a new research report outlining his expectations for Apple's 2016 iPhone launches, including several interesting tidbits about the upcoming devices.

First, Kuo believes Apple still has a new 4-inch iPhone in the works that "resembles an upgraded iPhone 5s". The device is said to be targeted for launch in the first half of next year and will come equipped with an A9 processor.Kuo believes this new 4-inch iPhone will not include 3D Touch support as part of an effort to keep it differentiated from the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. He also projects Apple could ship 20-30 million units of this new iPhone through the end of 2016.

Looking ahead to the next full refresh with the iPhone 7, Kuo expects the usual third-quarter launch in 2016 with an unsurprising upgrade to a new A10 chip to offer increased performance. He does, however, believe Apple will opt to differentiate between the two sizes of the iPhone 7 when it comes to RAM, with the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 carrying the same 2 GB seen in current iPhones while the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus will include 3 GB of RAM for performance reasons.

Kuo believes major winners for the 2016 iPhone cycle include Foxconn, which he expects will be the exclusive supplier for the new 4-inch iPhone, and TSMC, which he expects will be the sole provider of the A9 chip used in that phone as well as the A10 chip used in the iPhone 7.

Don't think I could ever go back to a inch phone but I think for the 7 I will give the 4.7 inch a try I have a plus now and it is slightly tough to pocket, since I have an Ipad Mini 4 I think I could go with the 4.7, I just wish apple would give that phone the 1080p screen and the image stabilized camera

And we just keep making this person famous like the Kardashians! We're pretty much closing the gap between tech industry, hollywood and politics.

First off KGI Securities is smoking CRACK---there will NEVER BE AN IPHONE 4 guys!! those days are long gone, get over it. Apple will only offer 2 sizes of iphones and I promise one will not be the small 4 inch
"Apple will never do a smaller iPad, a bigger iPhone, 5,5" will never happen because no leaks" Maybe you'd like to throw "Apple will never make a car".

Sure there is, the 6S doesn't have OIS like the 6S+ does. Stands to reason that 3D touch and the Taptic Feedback Engine would be missing due to size constraints.

Ming-Chi Kuo has been very accurate recently. I believe all of his predictions about the 6s/Plus were true and he's been mostly accurate in the past.

Example from last year (about the 6): "Take his 2014 roadmap — released at the beginning of the year — in which Kuo accurately predicted Apple’s entire product lineup for the year, including new lower-cost iMacs; new iPad Airs and Minis; the iPhone 6 line; and the Apple Watch lineup, with the then-controversial prediction that some models would cost several thousands of dollars.

The only thing he got wrong was an updated Apple TV set-top box with motion-tracking technology that would get rid of the need for a physical remote." (Source: http://www.cultofmac.com/273923/ming-chi-kuo/)

Mark my words....This will never happen.
Don't bet against it? unless you think next year the 6 and 6+ will be offered free on contract - that will hurt Apple's precious margins.

Next year, I am thinking we will see:

iPhone 7,7+
Iphone 6s,6s+
iPhone 4"

I hope they would differentiate it only by the screen size and perhaps making it a bit thicker so there is less of a hit to the battery from the smaller physical size. That said even if they do give it older hardware as long as it is at least equal in specs to my 6+ I'll strongly consider upgrading for the screen size.

I have a 6 and I really like the speed of the device. I really don't like the screen size. I prefer the smaller 4" phone. I'd take a A9 in a 4" form factor. I'd prefer latest and greatest, but at this point it's literally beggars can't be choosers.
So on that note: Apple, I'm begging you. Please bring back a 4" iPhone with at least iPhone 6 performance.
Don't need any other bells and whistles, just a 4" phone as fast or faster then the iPhone 6.

Thanks.

P.S. If I want to do anything with a larger screen I almost always will have an iPad and/or a laptop nearby that's much better then any phone.

There is already a 4" device with "iPhone 6 performance" and it's called the iPhone 5s

However there is no 4" screen device with iPhone 6s performance so if this new 4" phone turns out be real, and matches all the features of the 6s as well, it should make for a solid update though outside of Apple Pay I am not sure what the purpose of updating the 5s is. I'm sure it will be supported just as long as the 6.

Not to try and sound negative, but I believe we'll be in for a disappointment with the 7 models. Looking at the last product keynote in September, I'd say a lot of people could see right through Apple and the fact that they're obviously running out of steam to milk money out of their customers year after year.

Quality control seems to have gone down hill in favor of bigger profits under Tim Cook. I understand the stockholders need to make money off of their share-investment, but it is starting to get ridiculous.

The iPhone 6S came with 3D touch as the main feature, but yet this new feature wasn't introduced on any of the iPads, nor was there an iPad Air 3 released this year. The iPad mini finally caught up with the iPad Air 2's specs from last year. The caulk lines on the new phones are extremely ugly, and so is the protruding camera, heck, the iPhone 6 models are probably the ugliest phones on the market. Why? Because Tim Cook likes to save .01 cent per smartphone shipment and make the phone too thin for its own good.

In addition to the above, the average iPhone buyer doesn't understand the storage capacities as well as we do on here, so they'll get the standard 16 GB storage iPhone. After they buy the phone, they'll go back to the carrier store a week later complaining about how they can't do this and that, and it's because it turns out they do not have enough storage... Trust me, it happens, I saw some older lady complaining about it at the Verizon store about two weeks ago. "Quality? Nah, we'll be 16 GB in the base model and save a couple dollars per phone."

I remember with the iPhone 4's antenna-gate problem, Steve Jobs gave out free bumper cases to the customers to help solve the problem. Tim Cook would just laugh and tell you to deal with it.

Apple is definitely not the same quality company they once were.
