Agree it shouldn't be "last years hardware", but smaller form factors will typically always have less functionality and/or power simply due to space constraints and a higher TDP.

I considered that, but then, the very next year, there all that hardware is, squeezed into that little case anyway.

They sell these to business customers. There are a lot of companies using iPhones now and they all want a low-cost option.

This really is a non-issue for most and a money maker for Apple.

FWIW
DLM

I love the excuses.

The business could pay the same amount of money for a Samsung Galaxy phone, a Sony Xperia, an LG G4, and an HTC with 32 GB of storage for the same price as the 16 GB iPhone.

Even then the purpose of a business cell phone is to have documents and e-mails stored on them, so 16 GB still isn't enough if you want to install the office suite and then save documents on them, and keep thousands of e-mails on the device.

Those who want a 4" screen and 16 GB of storage are the type that should just buy a flip phone and be happy. Why waste your money if you're just going to use it to talk and text?

whatever dude. Obviously you feel the need to overcompensate for something

What a childish response to what I said. You couldn't come up with anything better than that?

At 4" they hit the sweet spot of size vs. usability. Everything larger is more difficult to use. That is not saying larger is bad, but fundamentally requires more effort on the part of the user. Some people are OK with that. I've had a 6+ and now a 6s. I'm OK with it. Not everyone is.

They really should not abandon the 4" size.
I find 5.5" size to be the sweet spot. I use it one-handed and read content easily. More than ever people use their screens over the phone function, especially since they first developed the 4" model.

I don't really care what size Apple makes. Rather than complain like it's my right to a certain type of device I just go out and buy the phone that meets my needs. They're hardly the only smart phone maker, and the hardware and software are nearly doppelgängers. However, if Apple thinks there's a large enough market to make a profit you can be sure they'll develop an updated 4" model.

I might consider iPhone 7 Plus considering the Apple Watch taking care of many of the micro activities that one used to use the iPhone for...

I don't own an iPhone, so forgive my my uninformedness, but are all these iPhones really necessary?
iPhone 6s + just came out and already there's talk of a new 4" iPhone months later!
And what, really, will be all that big of a difference between an iPhone 6s+ & an iPhone 7+?
I know iPhone's their cashcow & God bless 'em, but isn't this getting sort of rediculous?

Good post, and good question. Especially somce in a couple of years these iphone 7's that arent even out yet will seem old and dated by then.
It's just an example of how far our hyper consumerist society has gone.

Of course you still use it, it's just two years old. But phones are about to get fast enough to be used and updated for five or more years to come. But not if they are 32-bit only. There will be a future iOS version which still supports the 5s but not 5c, despite both being released at the same day. The cost-benefit ratio of any computer depends on how long you will use it. And for how long Apple will support it with updates.

Ha, the excitement of that cat-and-mouse game we can play with hardware & software makers, with them trying to push us to upgrade as quick as possible, while we try to resist and hold on to the "old" gadgets for as long as they last. Apart from still rocking an iPhone 5C, I also still use an original 2006 MacBook with Snow Leopard on it, the latest system it supports. It does require some IT aerobics to get things done, but it works. :)

More like the reality of the style of smartphone vs. the choice of those who want a miniature device.
You realize you are attempting to make fun of something that was the only Apple/best smartphone on the market 14 months ago, right?

Did you only talk/text 14 months ago when you were likely using a 5s?

Honestly, I bought a 5S when the iPhone 6 came out because I simply don't like the ergonomics of the 6. It's too tall, wide and slippery, feels awkward to hold. The iPhone 6 is simply not made to be used with one hand ever. I use 2 hands when I need to type quickly, that's it. If I wanted to use both hands, I'd have gotten a tablet.

Apple seems to intentionally make terrible use of screen real estate though so that people with 4 inch screens have a bad experience. On the music app, it shows 3 playlists (just 2 when a song is currently playing), half of the screen is wasted. When I open an Artist, I see just 2 albums. When I open an album, I see 5 tracks. The play/pause button on the bottom is too small. On some apps, you gotta scroll down to use the most used button. Calendar app is no fun on a 4 inch screen.

I'd love to eventually upgrade the phone without going one size bigger. A fancier camera and 3D touch would be cool I guess.

Sign me up for the "iPhone 7 minus". :)

New 4" iPhone in 2016. PLEASE BE TRUE.

The iPhone 6/6s are just too damn big!

4 inch screen is just too small! If only Apple can just get rid of the home button and trim the top and bottom bezels, they might be able to fit the 4.7 inch screen in the form factor of a slightly larger iPhone 5/5S.

My Moto X 2013 has the same 4.7 screen size as the 6 is about as big as an iPhone 5.

whatever dude. Obviously you feel the need to overcompensate for something

Do people still make these jokes? It's no longer clever. So are those people driving giant pickup and SUV vehicles trying to compensate for something as well?

All we need to do is look at the source of this rumor and realize we can ignore it.

On the other hand, a lower cost iPhone would hit the spot. My 3GS still rocks and I don't really need all the performance of 6S so a slightly slower, smaller model would be great for upgrade time.

All we need to do is look at this guy talking about his 3GS and realize we can ignore him. Go buy an iPhone 4S for $150. I liked my 3GS in 2009 but it's 2015 ffs.

On topic I'd buy a new 4 inch but without 3D touch what would make it significantly superior to the 5S?

Late to the party, but here's my theory (which may be original or already widely popular and/or dismissed).

So, here's my theory (again, which may be widely held already; just don't have time to read this thread):

There will be no iPhone that comes out in 2016.

The current iPhone is robust enough and will sell enough that a 2016 update will not happen, because...

June 29, 2017 is the ten-year anniversary of the iPhone. The iPhone 6s will be the last to roll out until Apple unveils some wicked awesome, truly-game-changing iPhone on that anniversary. Perhaps the iPhone X (denoting the 10-year anniversary).

Carry on.

Blasphemy!!!! Reduce the iconic iPhone bezels? What kind of heathen are you?

I agree.
Nobody's a bigger Apple guy than me, but even I think this is all sort of "perverse",
for lack of a better word, with all of this constant phonephonephone nonsense.

OK, release iPhone 7+, then take a deep breath for awhile for 2 or 3 years,
then come out with something that's a marked change & improvement from that.

Although, beyond a 4K camera & display, where is there left to go?
We always hear about how the laws of physics bump against CPU advancement,
well what about human eye resolution perception? 7K lurks in 4K's shadows,
but, again, is that really necessary?!? Oh, wait: it is.
because Apple broke their own limitation on screen resolution by bypassing the Retina level.

I can't see this being successful. The people whining for a 4 inch iPhone don't want an "upgraded" 5s, they want the same latest flagship iPhone but just with a 4 inch screen instead.
This coupled with the rumor that they will upgrade the RAM again in the Plus after having just upgraded the memory in the 6s makes me this his predictions are just BS.
Why not? There are millions of iPhone users who couldn't name the processor in the phone let alone give a definition for what RAM is. They know how much storage it has, maybe know the camera's megapixels, and that's about it.
