I hate to say it but between the iMac and now the macbook, apple is turning me off with all this need to be the thinnist out there, it gets to the point where it starts hampering performance, it does'nt always have to be the thinnist

How do you expect Apple to compete? They can't compete on specs or price with the rest of the market. The only thing they have for themselves in laptops
is OSX and their world renowned industrial design.

For me, weight is more important than thin... So make them as light as possible but needn't make sacrifices (eg ports, card readers etc) purely to achieve thinner form factors.

Also, I would be sad to see a line up where all models lack any user upgradable components (memory and hard drive). Again, this shouldn't increase weight though it might make the machine thicker -- that trade off is totally worth it to me.

THINNER? What will it be made of, diamond? Or... I don't want to be another one of those people blasting this buzzword... graphene? I'd be afraid of it snapping in half.

I'm also afraid that it will have zero connections except for a Lightning port in the back to charge.

No, they could just have it not be ridiculously thin but keep the nice quality and good OS. The RMBP is perfect.

I'm all for thinner devices, but I do think Apple is obsessed with making things too thin sometimes. I think the air cooling vents on the rMBP are a great solution, and something I would miss if I were using an Air. The rMBP is plenty thin, but you won't see it overheating or getting overly warm.

If a 12-inch Retina MBA could replace the current 11 and 13-inch models, I'm intrigued by that. At the end of the day, I'm more of a rMBP guy. But I'm still interested to see what Apple has planned for the MBA.

Fanless 12" in a present 11" size would be perfect!

Maybe Apple is aiming for a fanless Macbook?
However I concur about the necessity of ports, and those will always have a certain thickness.

Speaking of the 12" Macbook (Air), I think Apple might dump the 11" and 13" in favor of this 12" one. Maybe Apple wants to push 11"-people towards iPads (aren't there rumors about a bigger iPad in the works?) and 13"-people towards Macbook Pro.

-12" Macbook Air
-13" Macbook Pro
-15" Macbook Pro

A fanless 12" in a present 11" size would be perfect! And thick enough to have a very good battery time also in the future!

The size of these devices has decreased far beyond the point of diminishing returns. There is virtually zero functional advantage to making a laptop computer thinner than the current MacBook Air. It won't be any more portable for 99.9% of people than it was before. It's just a marketing gimmick to make it even thinner than it already is. Retina is like 15 months old, that doesn't count as innovation anymore. And Apple doesn't even make their own processors, they use Intel's, and Airs are basically the least powerful of all of Apple's computers, so that doesn't qualify either.

So least powerful doesn't count? If you can make it more powerful and thinner, why not? Why hold back because a handful of people don't want you to innovate? There's zero problems with this and even competitors are doing it and are thinner than the MBA already.

Perfect for you and I perhaps. Not perfect for my four other family members that have MBAs.

This is why Tim Cook the beancounter couldn't hold Jobs' jockstrap. He's obsessed with marketing BS like thinner-smaller-lighter instead of actually improving performance or adding features or, you know, innovating to transform the product into something new.

I had the impression that Jobs was also interested or obsessed with marketing and having things "thinner-smaller-lighter."

Do you remember the "1 inch" Powerbooks that were marketed as being "incredibly thin" laptops?

The portability of 11" is SO PRECIOUS!

i just picked up a 2013 MBA but will make the move to this rumored MBA if the battery life is awesome like this one. I'd much prefer more screen within this 13" body.

I couldn't disagree more: For me the size (and screen ratio) of the present 11" is perfect. A slimmer bezel I think can make room for a 12,1" display using the SAME SIZE AS THE PRESENT 11", and that would be the best for me, because the portability (size and weight) is SO IMPORTANT. Apple must not discontinue this option! (And may there also, in addition, be a model that you like...) :)

I tell you what Apple, i've been waiting for 6 months for the next retina macbook pro to be release, but you move it and move it! Now it's mid of 2014????!!! Are you frigging kidding me?!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Me too! I can not hold on any longer, should have bought one this summer when I really needed one. But now I don't really need one in hurry again... But I'll need one again this December. So, I was hoping for the new release this October 23rd?.

Best thing would be:

11" and 12" MacBook Air
13" and 15" MacBook Pro

All of them could be referred to as MacBooks to make things simpler.

My guess is that the 12" got its extra inch via reduced bezel and isn't physically any bigger than the 11. As such, there would be no reason for the 11 to even exist.

I'm just wondering would anyone ever be interested in a 15" MBA? I know the 15 rmbp is an awesome machine and I use one. I love the bigger screen but wonder if there is a market for a super thin, albeit slower, rMBA

Apple's engineering team can push the most performance out of the thinnest machines they make. If you think a 5mm bezel and the most powerful all-in-one components on the current iMac is not innovative... Then....

Next year could end up being a very exciting one.

Anything will be better than wasting another year like 2013. Yet Apple profited wildly by using 2013 for pure profit taking. That choice will give the company and those who love to brag like Apple does, plenty of celebrating to do. :)

The article failed to mention that this 12" consumer notebook will be outfitted with a multitouch touchscreen and be running a custom flavor of Mac OS X that can run iOS apps as well. It will be called the MacPad™ Pro.

No, but seriously...I think this would be a game changer for Apple.

I hope my prediction (read as wants) come true. Or perhaps something close to it, as long as my get my 14" MBP!

As someone who finds the 13" just slightly too small and the 15" just slightly too big I propose the following:

-12" for those who need ultra portability (11" is just too small to do anything. Get a tablet if you're in this crowd). Budget model; ULV or dual processors, integrated graphics. The new Air (typical student, everyday browser laptop).

-14" for those like me that want a steady compromise of power and portability, and physical screen real estate. Quad core and discrete graphics.

-16" for the power users: tons of screen estate, large footprint and internal volume for the best hardware. Fastest CPUs and GPUs.

These would all be in the current MBP chassis meaning uniform (cube) body shapes. I hate the teardrop shape of the Air. Drop the Air and Pro lines and SIMPLY have the 12", 14", and 16" MacBooks. Retina on all models. Fusion drives on all models to optimize performance/storage needs.

How does this not seem like the best solution? It screams elegance IMO.

The main pity is that Thunderbolt docking stations - which knock the connection issue on the head - have been so slow to appear & overpriced.

Very true. I've been waiting for the Henge Horizontal Dock for what seems a lifetime. They've said bugger all since they announced it (at which point they said it'd be out Q3, 2013 which has now passed).

The ones that are out there really do suck. Henge's seemed like a decent, all be it a very expensive option!

My guess is that the 12" got its extra inch via reduced bezel and isn't physically any bigger than the 11. As such, there would be no reason for the 11 to even exist.

They wouldn't keep two MBAs that are merely 1" screen size difference. They're practically identical.

I would LOVE this is have a quad-core A8 chip inside of it!

BTW, just recently change my username from macintel4me to Arm64MyMac. :)

Of course he remembers but why let facts get into the way of lashing out at somebody?

MBP with Pro screensizes please

And again not even a rumor about a 17'.

I won't even consider buying a new laptop until there is a new 17' rMBP. Laptops have enough drawbacks as it is, if they also have a small screen I'll just keep using my 30' screen / Mac Pro desktop, thankyouverymuch.

This should be a nice machine. I was looking on getting an iPad when the new ones are released later this month but I think I'll hold out for a new Retina MBA. :)
