Apple really needs to simplify their line-up:

12" Retina MacBook Air
13" Retina MacBook Pro
15" Retina MacBook Pro

Agreed - and they will probably just call the 12" Air - "the Macbook Air", so that there's not a strange plethora of dimensions.

I don't know why anyone would want a 13" MBA when the 13" Pro exists, other than pricing reasons. That can be fixed by reducing the base spec of the pro.

Currently? Compared to the standard pro: lighter weight, higher screen res, faster primary drive. Compared to the retina 13: lighter weight and large price difference.

Because I’m a graphic artist and I want the best looking photos...and this will sound anal, but the press photo you used wasn’t converted from CMYK to RGB for screen display...the colors are off.

Look at the attached for comparison.

Apple may be planning to release a 12-inch MacBook with an all-new design and high-resolution Retina Display in the middle of 2014, according to KGI Securities anaylst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Specifically, the new MacBook is expected to feature a clamshell form factor even thinner than the current MacBook Air, and may debut at a lower-price point than the current Retina MacBook Pro line due to an improving yield rate. While Kuo stops short of calling the new model a replacement for the current MacBook Air line, his description of the model suggests that it would indeed supplant Apple's current ultra-slim notebook line.Kuo's claims match with a report from NPD DisplaySearch analysts earlier this week claiming that Apple is planning to introduce a new 12-inch MacBook Air next year. That new model was predicted to use a high-resolution 2304 x 1440 display

Both rumors also fall in line with earlier reports that Apple is set to move to IGZO displays for many of its future products, allowing for higher-resolution displays with lower power consumption.

Kuo has generally been quite accurate with his predictions over the past several years, including accurately outlining many of the details of Apple's 2013 launch plans as far back as January. Other accurate predictions have included the introduction of a "third MacBook line" that arrived in the form of Retina MacBook Pro models and the discontinuation of the 17-inch MacBook Pro last year.

A retina MBA is plausible. But can the gpu handle it? That is the question.

Considering that I run my 15" on Intel HD 4000 more often than not, I would imagine that is not much of a problem, and certainly not one with Mavericks and beyond.

I kind of see the a potential 12" becoming the sole Air, given that the 13" rMBP is basically a more capable 13" Air and as costs come down the latter becomes less necessary.

A lineup of one Air and two sizes of Pro, all Retina would be quite clean and comprehensible. Indeed given how light they've all become, perhaps the Air would just be called a 'MacBook' at this point.

You mean with a detachable keyboard? Like some sort of MacBook Air ipad hybrid that will run both iOS AND OSX? Hmmm. Interesting. I love my ipad mini. I really do. It's highly portable and I can be creative on it, But there are times when on the road that I do long for the power & flexibility of a true laptop. It's not the physical keyboard as much as the ability to run actual programs that I miss. :)

not quite; we will see a model with separable keyboard - the macpad air, and one with a swivelling display to create a "touch tablet" which will be called the macpad pro. both versions will run iOS and OSX, and will feature multi-touch retina screens. i cannot promise this, but my sources - a top level apple employee who recently auctioned an hour of coffee with him - tell me that the macpad pro is likely to have backlit keyboard, facetime camera AND a fingerprint sensor.

Ugh. Really Apple? You already have a 13inch and a 15inch macbook. You really think there's a need for a 12inch?

Now all that's needed is a 14inch Macbook.

and a 17-inch. Apple stupidly discontinued their only portable with desktop size real estate worth screen space. It is gone from their lineup!

The 12" MBA would have the same physical size as a current 11" model, only with a smaller bezel.

The "pro" is not a pro machine these days anyway, perhaps just drop the suffix and have a 12/13/15" MacBook line. I doubt we will see the 17" model return.

They really need to bump up the resolution of all their displays too. 1280x800 x2 on the 13" and 1440x900 x2 on the 15" is woefully inadequate - it's less workspace than the old pro machines had, and the current Airs have.
The scaled options are very blurry, and at x1 everything is too small.

13" PC notebooks have moved to 3200x1800 now (1600x900 x2) which is much more fitting for a display of that size. (though some might prefer 2880x1800 at 13")

Wow, my thoughts exactly. Thanks for writing that up for me! ;) (Except that the current 13" MBP has the same working space as the 13" rMBP since there is no high-res option like for the 15".)

It's getting harder to distinguish the Airs from the Pros, so the 12" screen into the current 11" chassis with tiny bezels is an obvious way to differentiate the lines. I think it's pretty much the perfect solution. And I bet that 12" will be something to behold, now that Apple has had 4 years or so to perfect the design. Also Macs aren't as important to Apple anymore, so it makes sense to simplify the lineup.

Edit: I'm going to disagree with you and say they will emphasize the smallness of the 12" and still call it "the Macbook Air", and then for the 13/15 call them "Macbook Pro" as they are now. Obviously the non-retina MBP will be dropped (or the 13" be available as education-only. I don't think they can afford to not call them Pro as the vast majority of people will assume there is a performance drop, even though us nerds know they are not the most "Pro" machines you can get.

I know people are whiny about the thinness but I have to say that I get quite a bit jealous when I see those itty-bitty 11" Airs. I really much prefer a 15" screen though, and so can't wait to replace the 15" I'm using with a thinner/lighter retina one.

Thanks for the visual. I think they'll update the look though... we don't want it to be too old-looking or the press will poo poo it!

Also thinner. Don't forget thinner.

That's one reason I (along with a few others) suggested bumping up the Pro line an inch, resulting in MBA 12", MBP 14", MBP 16"

The 16" wouldn't be beastly large, but would make up a little of that space lost with the 17" being scrapped, and a 14" could/would/should have discrete GPU (Pro = discrete GPU, 32GB RAM max, quad CPUs, etc.)

I predict apple will start to dilute themselves with all these products coming out

Id trade out of my '13 13" Air for a 12" Retina display with a quickness.

Everytime I work on my wife's 15" retina book I get more and more jealous, not for the power of the Pro, just the screen. The Air has PLENTY of power for what I use this laptop for.

Also love the battery life of the new air + Mavs.

Apple IS the new Samsung, a screen size to match every numerical character that exists!

This rumour is daft, really? They are going to destroy sales of the other Air models by slapping a Retina one bang in the middle? Don't think so personally.

I really like this idea. I hope it happens!

And again not even a rumor about a 17'.

I won't even consider buying a new laptop until there is a new 17' rMBP. Laptops have enough drawbacks as it is, if they also have a small screen I'll just keep using my 30' screen / Mac Pro desktop, thankyouverymuch.

If we all close our eyes and wish really really hard maybe Tim will say those fateful words.......

just one more thing

I'm using a 10' laptop at the moment. Why on earth would you need a 30' screen?

Glass keys? This is a joke, right?

I could only hope it was, but I'd love to see improvement in the keyboard. Perhaps a stronger polycarbonate....I mean plastic, with a slight texture. Or even a refined slate, or the quartz like iphone home buttons, at the risk of making it heavier. I'm sure there is room for improvement on the touch pad as well. Bad keyboards (layouts included) and touch pads are my #1 complaint about laptops -- Apple's are top notch, IMO, but I'd like to see the bar get raised.

Hell, the power button could embed the fingerprint sensor as well. I can't imagine that won't be integrated into more products, assuming the TouchID storage interface is "portable" (as in, taken out of the A7 and put in a "T7" chip?).

Edit: big brother doesn't like passionate language.

Yeah, that screen wouldn't even fit in your house ... :D

Yeah, I'd love a super portable, but still very stout in terms of CPU/GPU/RAM options. I *love* the rMBPs and the effective screen real estate you get.

The rumored resolution for the 12" ( 2304x1440, desktop size of 1152x720 (16:10) ) can't be true

Now, the Apple laptops' desktop size is as follows:

MBA 11: 1366x768 (16:9)
MBA 13: 1440x900 (16:10)
rMBP13: 1280x800 (16:10)
rMBP15: 1400x900 (16:10)

So, as we can see, in terms of desktop space, now, the screen of the MBA 13" is better that the one of the rMBP 13"

Making a 12" screen of 2304x1440 -> 1152x720 (16:10) not only will make that potentially rMBA 12" to have less desktop space that the current MBA 13", but also less than the rMBP 13", and even less than the current MBA 11".

I hope the new Retina MBA's screen resolution (despite the size of the panel) will be 2880x1440 (1440x900 desktop size, same as today's MBA 13" or rMBP 15") so it won't be a step back.

I couldn't disagree more: For me the size (and screen ratio) of the present 11" is perfect. A slimmer bezel I think can make room for a 12,1" display using the SAME SIZE AS THE PRESENT 11", and that would be the best for me, because the portability (size and weight) is SO IMPORTANT. Apple must not discontinue this option! (And may there also, in addition, be a model that you like...) :)

Sounds good to me!
