DisplayPort was designed to be more flexible. It has no maximum resolution except based on the link bandwidth (currently 17.2Gbps; more than double dual-link DVI [which caps out at 2560x1600]).

DisplayPort can handle 3840x2400 (or 2160p QuadHD) today. Those panel resolutions aren't even expected to be feasibly manufactured in the next five years.

LightPeak can't come close to that. When/if it is ever finished and released (there are no plans or timetables set yet), it will unify the peripheral buses long before it hits the extreme high bandwidth connections of video buses. By that time, DisplayPort will be well on its way to higher bandwidth links.
Cool. Thanks for the info.

Just bought a Dell U2711 at us$680.

I think the closest Apple can go is 50% more of Dell's price. That said, how much is design worth, especially when people are spending most of the time looking at the pixels and not the bezel, the smooth aluminum stand?

I never said at the conference. Just around that time frame in april. I think NAB is April 11 or something. Either way we will know soon enough.

Apple just released a FCS upgrade not too long ago. They can wait another year. The pro products are not the priority for Apple, they are secondary to consumer products. I would like to see a better interface for Color, Apple hasn't changed much since they bought the company that made Color.

Is the 30 inch Cinema at EOL

Will the 30 inch Cinema display HD will be at EOL in June? I don't understand why would Apple kill the 30 inch and downgrade to a lower size? Apple was the first to intro the 30 inch into the market, if your in a market for a display will you wait or buy or buy other brand besides Apple, after waiting 2 years I should of bought a 30 inch when I got my 2008 Mac Pro, Will Apple reduce the price of the 30 inch cinema when WWDC comes around. How many people think this rumour is even creditable, I guess we won't know until Apple releases LED Cinema displays at WWDC

Apple is preparing to launch a 27-inch LED Cinema Display pegging a release window of "by June". The 27-inch LED Cinema Display is said to use the same panel as that used in Apple's 27-inch iMac and will closely resemble the existing 24-inch LED Cinema Display

YES !!

Can I order already :D

I say Apple leaked the 27" external display on purpose and are planning a 32" beast and surprise everyone. It's not like Apple to downgrade specs (30" has more pixels) and having a 27" monitor on a Mac Pro would reduce the value between an iMac at $1700 and a Mac Pro at $3000+.

I love the apple cinema display. They are just awesome awesome monitors. NOTHING I have seen comes close.

Not to mention I don't even need to calibrate them. I do for consistancies sake but it makes no difference what so ever. Soooo nice :)

I'll purchase a 24 inch monitor only if they come down on that ridiculous price. And that's only because it comes with built-in iSight and speakers.

27 inch is definitely out of the question. it's probably going to be about 1500 bucks or so. too much for just a computer monitor. I can get a bigger tv for less money. apple is getting ridiculous now. remember when they used to have the fastest computers???? ha!

Oh yes. Absolutely. Why should Apple listen to its customers? Especially its high-end high-ticket enterprise line customers?
Yeah, those guys aren't buying Apple displays, especially the 30" ones.

I have both a 30" aPPle display & a 30 HP display. The HP display is brighter& gives a much less washed out picture.
I assume you're talking about the LP2480, which is indeed a beautiful display. It's also quite a bit newer, LED backlight, and hugely thick, not to mention $200-400 more expensive than the Apple 30" display.
A 16 X 10 screen in the computer field is a better compromise than a 16 X 9 screen more commonly found in the entertainment field.
I'm not sure that's the case, but more to the point, panel manufacturers are standardizing their large-format production on 16x9 for cost reasons.
I don't understand why would Apple kill the 30 inch and downgrade to a lower size?
Because the 30" panel is old and it's time for Apple to move on. There are no 30"/larger panels on the market now for Apple to use except for the one in the HP and the NEC, which are also a few years old now. It wouldn't be suitable to launch a new product with a panel from 2008.

Given the volume price of getting 27" panels, it's much more likely that Apple will drop the price of the 24" and bring the 27" in until something bigger comes down the pipe. LG seems to have worked out the problems with the brand new panel for the iMacs.

It can't be more than $1199, and even that is high. You can always get a bigger TV for less money than an equivalent computer monitor in this range--even low-end 30" monitors are twice the price of 32" 1080p televisions. High pixel density is expensive.

And it will be even more over due by the time it actually happens. JUNE??? you have got to be kidding me. Ive already put off my new mac pro purchase long enough. this is ridiculous. does apple just not even care about their computer business anymore?

NOPE :(

I agree with you, it seems like it's not as important to them anymore if the first two letters of the product don't start with iP

iP'd off :)

An iPad is a tablet computer!

So stop saying "Does apple still make computers?"

ROFLMAO

Sorry, but Apple doesn't care about computers anymore.

Next gen whatever better be good. I'm in the market for a desktop and a laptop. None of the current Apple offerings do match my expectations (read: I wouldn't mind paying a hefty Apple tax, as the computers would deliver QUALITY - but alas - that quality was lost somewhere in the Intel transition and the mobile stuff).

And a lack of Blu-Ray actually would equal a switch to THE DARK SIDE for me.

The 27-inch LED Cinema Display is said to use the same panel as that used in Apple's 27-inch iMac and will closely resemble the existing 24-inch LED Cinema Display released in October 2008.

Well, if this is the case, then the mockup is inaccurate. The 27" iMac is a 16:9 aspect ratio; the 24" LED ACD is 16:10. Both of the displays in the mockup are the same aspect ratio.

I prefer 16:10 for a computer display, personally...

Look at any computer from the 80s and tell me one thing they can do that the iPhone can not.

Specifications != real-world. The iPhone/iPad are locked down by software restrictions to an extent that they can only be considered appliances. If you want to compare, let's say, a Mac IIci versus a Jailbroken iPhone, then yes I'd agree that that liberated iPhone can do as much computing as that golden years Mac.

Let the iPad dust settle, and boom!

Not likely that that dust will settle.. Here is a taster of the new reality for us:

Apple basically has three product groups:

1. iPhone, iPad, iPods: content consumption
2. Consumer computing
3. Pro computing

The update cycle of the first group is somewhere like this:

Fall: iPods
Spring: iPad?
Beginning of summer: iPhone

The update cycle of the first group consists of the largest group of customers and will generate most rumors, news and posters here. The update cycles of the other groups run parallel and in addition updates are often silent if they are not accompanied by a design refresh.

So, expect news from the first group to drown out all news and rumors of the other two groups. If you are waiting for a period with mostly pro computing news than you will be sorely disappointed.

We are staring into a dust-storm that will not settle the coming years..

Look at any computer from the 80s and tell me one thing they can do that the iPhone can not. Are you saying those were not computers?

Wasn't hard to think of...

READ AND WRITE TO A USER ACCESSIBLE FILE-SYSTEM WITH FULL ACCESS TO THE PERMANENT STORAGE DEVICE

(caps for emphasis)

another cheap shot would be

MULTITASKING

Where did you get it at that great price if you don't mind me asking?

Aspect Ratio

Will the 27" be 16:10 (like the 24")... or 16:9 (like the iMac).

IMHO... I prefer 16:10. Good for both work and play.

And please... pretty please... not so @#$% glossy.

And when you stand in front of both, you won't be able to say that the Dell is of less quality than the Apple Cinema Display.

I've used both and to my eye the Dell 30" display is as good as the 30" Cinema Display. It just costs less and has more features.

And the new Apple displays totally suck because they're glossy, so the Dell is the clear winner now.

It might be a good opportunity to buy one of the old 30" Apple displays when the successor is released.

But, I forgot... I get on-site-service for the Dell and not for the Apple.

Yeah...sounds like another disgruntled person TOO CHEAP to buy the QUALITY Apple product :)

I've had a pair of the new (2008) 24" ACD's running for what, almost a year and a half now. They are FANTASTIC and the quality of the display CAN'T BE MATCHED by Dell or anyone else.

I can't wait for the 27" will probably dump my 24" and make up the difference for a new pair. They're great!

Ditto. I've yet to see a display in the last 15 months that can even compare, let alone surpass the 24" ACD. Expensive, but worth every penny. I love 'em!

the hell with 27"

i need a replacement for my 30" cinema display. WHAT ABOUT 34" APPLE!!!??
