As soon as its announced I am going to get the new macbook pro. I just bought a penryn 2.4 200gb 4 gb ram macbook pro in Feb. What do you think I could get for it on craigslist or ebay?

Just out of curiosity, why are you so set on upgrading? Is there something in particular that you think the MBP will contain or is your current MBP problematic?

The plastic is going away because of the environmental impact concerns. period. This has already been laid out, so there's no chance the plastic MB is sticking around for that fact alone. Apple has to appear concerned on this front consdering the proclivities of their most loyal customers...

if this is true then explain the move of the iphone from metal to plastic....

Assuming it's in excellent condition, probably very close to retail price; maybe $1700?

And go eBay for sure. Craigslist is worse for the seller in both price and safety of the deal. Ebay has both the secure Paypal and close-to-retail prices.

Edit: Whoops, I thought he had a MB, not a MBP.

I keep hearing this but I have never seen proof of why this is so!

Doesn't plastic recycle as easily as aluminum? I would think it would take a lot less energy to recycle plastic, since it has a lower melting point than aluminum.
Only thing I can think of is that most types of plastic use oil in them, theres less oil, it costing more to produce too while all the prices are increases at stupid rates.

Aluminium can be fairly cost effective to manufacture, better long term durability in my opinion over the plastics used in macbooks.

Personally I think that metal is a nicer finish than the plastic but all I want from the macbook is dvd-rw in ALL models!!

Most likely because of the graphics card. The dedicated graphics on the MB are terrible.

Nothing wrong with my current macbook pro but I always have to have the newest apple laptops. I've been through 3 already in the past 2 years.

I agree, I just bought my MBP not 3 weeks ago, I love the thing, and I love everything about it. Plus, its at a pretty stable revision level in my eyes. If they release a new MBP Im sure as hell not buying it. I've learned from buying my Xbox360, buying when it first comes out gives you fame for 3 days, then you find yourself sending it in because of Red ring. I doubt they are doing a case refresh, they will probably add a higher processor option, and probably a blue ray option to the optical. Or, add a usb blue-ray drive, because seeing the super drive, its so small I doubt they can put blue-ray capabilities in it, plus, if I want blue-ray, I would get the 17" high Res Display. A case refresh will come out in Q4 possibly. If a case was leaked the other weak, well that just tells me they are not being careful, and that they are probably in testing mode right now.

I've expressed my words :)

According to
http://www.funponsel.com/blog/archi...-refresh-and-montevina-notebook-pc-platforms/ (the first link google delivered from "santa rosa vs montevina":

Interesting. I hadn't heard that before. But that doesn't change the fact that the two products are aimed at different market segments, and I don't see Apple dropping the Macbook as an entry-level laptop.

And as far as the rest of your post is concerned, are you (assumingly) looking at the macbook solely for the price difference to the macbook pro? Because if you need all the extra space/ports/drives, then perhaps the pro would be the wiser purchase..

I already said that I won't buy aluminum. Just personal preference. I'd rather buy the current Macbook, since I don't see anything really compelling in Montevina.

edit:

almost forgot your comment about the speed difference..again let me say if the montevina (and nehalem) were to be placed into the macbook air formfactor, it would have the same speed/integraded graphics, etc etc etc as the macbook.. =)

Could be, but we don't know if the maximum speeds will be the same. It's all speculation until Apple announces their plans.

Depends which plastic they use. I know that on older iPods they use plastics which couldn't be remoulded once they had been formed into a mould (thermosets). Im almost certain apple uses a similar plastic on a macbooks, because if they used a plastic which could easily be re-melted
and reused , then the heat generated from the macbook during use would weaken it and cause it to go out of shape.

It's in very good condition, the only thing wrong with it is the magsafe light turns off even when it is charging. Does ebay allow you to keep software on the hard drive? I think its referred to as hard drive loading or something like that. I have a lot of good software on it that might increase the price, like Office 2008, Photoshop CS3, Bento, Filemaker, quickbooks, iWork, Fusion, Crossover, etc....

If no case refresh, I probably wont buy it and stick with my current MBP. If they offer a 15" high def display that might sway me in the other direction though.

Everybody leaves software on the HDD. It's a great way to get a higher price.

I don't think landfill is an issue with Apple computers because most people either hang on to them in a closet somewhere or they recycle them don't they?

Plastic can only be recycled so many times, aluminium can be recycled over and over again without a loss in quality. Plastics are also made using oil which is not exactly the most environmentally friendly substance to use.

This makes some sense but doesn't sound like the correct reason.

Considering that the CPU runs at about 60-80 ℃ and the melting point of aluminum is 660 ℃, you would think that Apple could use a plastic with a melting point high enough to not be affected by the internal electronic heat but still less than the 660℃ required to melt aluminum.

yeah but to make plastic is alot more dangerous to the environment then aluminum

This is probably the reason that Aluminum is considered "environmentally friendly" but it seems like a pretty minimal difference.

I am sure oil is used in the process to smelt aluminum. If not directly for heat generation then surely as a lubricant or coolant in the smelting process. Also the mineral aluminum is not exactly healthy at higher concentrations in the blood stream so I wouldn't think it would not be something that we want added to landfill either.

heating/making or re-making plastic produces dangerous chemicals that get released out from the factory right into the air or water

Nope. The release of the original MacBook didn't even get an event. Mac Pros with Penryn were silent before MacWorld 2008, too.

The media and many non Mac users aren't remotely interested in Apples computer business any more, so there is no need for any kind of media event these days.

No, I mean oil is an ingredient in plastic, meaning we can not have plastic without oil because plastic is made with it. Aluminium is an element found in the earth naturally, plastic is not, and plastic doesn't really biodegrade. I don't think aluminium in landfills would have any affect on aluminium in our bloodstream.

Its not a case of when it melts, its just that as you heat a substance up, and it gets closer to melting point, then the substance will gradually weaken, and even marginal heating could warp the case if you used a thermoplastic (i.e one that can continuously be melted and remoulded). Therefore, it seems more likely they use a thermoplastic. Plus, I do think it would make sense if apple used the same plastic as in their older ipods becasue they'd have slightly cheaper manufacturing costs.

I could be wrong though. The main reason apple uses plastic is probably because it is relativly cheap compared to aluminium.

Very true, I always reformat and refresh the drive and of course include the original disk and you will have happy bidders :) Sorry I did not read the past part. Keeping the software can be a great value. However, you wish to consider keeping the software if you wanted to use it again for yourself.

no, plastic IS oil. plastic is made out of the black oil just like rubber and much more.. so those factories that produce plastic from black oil (not veggie oil)
also pollut the environment, burning the oil to produce plastic is one of the many steps

that was because the MacBook Pro was just announced. Everyone knew it was coming already. So why waste an event, when all the hype was already on the notebooks from Apple.

OK. I'll take your word for it but I have been around smelting Iron, Steel, and Aluminum plants and they kick out a significant amount of dangerous chemicals themselves.

Ore is usually loaded with impurities that need to be removed. This impurities include mixtures of natural lanthanides, rare earth minerals, sulphur, etc. etc.

If this is the primary reason why Aluminum is considered "eco-friendly" over plastic and yet it takes more energy to manufacture and recycle aluminum, then it seems to me that we should work on better filters for manufacturing plants to clean up the emissions.

Sorry, I didn't mean to get this thread so far off topic. I am done.
