I'm confused. I don't see that apple has changed the wording from "the new macbook pro" to simply "the macbook pro".

ive always said that only macworld 09 will bring a new macbook/pro

and the guy above me:

thats true, they will have to change the mbp page first
it also says it has the latest intel cpu which is not true anymore

so only the mbp are getting redesigned??
what about the mb is it only getting speed bumps??

I'm sure both will get a revamp at the same time

Yea, I agree so I think it will come out the 29th. But the fact that they changed the site to NOT say the "new MBP" has to mean something, right? This will most likely happen before the end of July. Anyone disagree/agree?

I think more so towards september. But you'll never know

ok so i'm hoping that its by mid august, because I'm leaving for college by the 18th and will get it no later. I've waited since February and would be pretty ticked with apple to screw the friggin college students over by releasing a new MBP in September. Besides its as others say, they'll lose customers to other PC brands AND I think the point of the ipod deal is not to get rid of existing macs as ANY mac will qualify for the deal. I think its to clear out stock for new ipods. SO if they released new ipods in September, wouldn't they want to get the new notebook hype done by August? let's hope.

UK refurb store

I would bet that if you went down to the Apple Store the day of the new macbook pro announcement you could buy the old model.

Unless they completely clear their old stock, they would probably have a few hanging around that you could purchase.

there are 9 new entries today in the UK Apple Refurb Store. a varied bunch of 2,4 2,5 2,6GHz Macbook Pros with 15 & 17" screens. That's quite a lot more in the list than on a 'normal' day. Would tend to support the 'refresh' coming.
I always find the Refurb Store to be excellent value, some 30% discount on the 'old' list price - have to question the value as opposed to the guess/wish list of improvements in the new MBP. I much prefer my plastic Macbook to my Alu Macbook Pro, the 802.11n/g working distance seems much further when the WiFi antennas are behind polycarbonate than when they're in a tin-can!

satart of new college year would be about right

What better time to launch the new MacBooks than at the start of the new college year? In such a case, September actually might be too late for some people who would need to pull the trigger on something in August. It's interesting that they seem to be thinking of moving from plastic to metal on the MacBooks, which might in itself be a reason to wait for them.

Jobs wouldn't release a *redesigned* mbp without making a big show on stage in a black shirt. Seems like a waste of a good 'one more thing...' moment. Or maybe they're not that proud of their mbp updates.

That new graphite Sony looks great, btw. Just another aluminum case from apple? Ho hum... All the good designers busy with cell phones these days at Apple?

I have been trying to find what date AAPL refreshed the macbook last summer (not the pro...just the base macbooks). Was it end of July? Anyone have the link to the macrumor article about it?

Also, this whole iPhone shortage worries me a tad for any sort of mac refresh in the next few weeks. From what I have heard, it is extremely difficult to browse around some apple stores due to the iPhone mania, people asking where they are when they are coming in, etc. I find it hard to believe that AAPL will update macs in this environment, but then you have students needing to buy their laptops in the next few weeks for college. I estimate week of august 11th is one of the final weeks to buy for college, since i would assume most kids want to try their laptops out for a bit before heading off. So most signs suggest a refresh for the next 3 weeks, but this iPhone craze spices things up. I am assuming the macs are one of the more popular products to actually see and try out in an apple store.

I heard that if you buy a laptop now, and then they update it within two weeks of your purchase, you can upgrade to the newer one for free. Anyone else heard of this?

The Buyer's Guide keeps links for the past few years worth of updates. February 26th of this year was the last update, when they went to Penryn. The Santa Rosa update was on November 11, 2007.

One of the Rumors articles said that two companies were involved in notebook display manufacturing. Has anyone checked to see their product lineup? Maybe try to gauge how likely it is that the new Macbook orders will have LED screens?

What signs are these?
"Apple notebook lines to see major design changes, sources say" Aluminum MacBook in 2008.
"Component report pins MacBook overhaul for third quarter"
"All Apple MacBooks to use LED backlighting by 2009"
Note it says 2009, not 2008. If the MacBooks were likely to go LED in 2008, wouldn't Economic Daily News say 2008?
In other words, the most likely scenario is: Aluminum 2008, LED 2009.

Just why would Apple not put a LED display in a MacBook?
Because Apple doesn't want to.

Completely bogus assessment of past history.

If you didn't notice, Apple switched to intel chips which completely changed the game. Apple can no longer update on their schedule. Apple must keep up with the competition if they want to remain relevant.
Um, that is their schedule. It holds for 2008 (so far), 2007, 2006, and probably 2005.

And of course, Apple updated their MacBook in May 2007 WITHOUT Santa Rosa… and in November 2007 with Santa Rosa, so they don't have to keep up as far as you think.

Apple will most likely update MBP's & MBs to Montevina within a month or two of the general release which occurred on the 14th.
And that's August/September, right with my prediction.
I think the imac will get the new quad as it already is using an early Montevina Plaform.
No, it's using an enhanced Santa Rosa platform. It probably won't get updated again until early 2009, and even then, it may not get quad-core until 2010.

Well really, they ought to. I just dropped by Sony's site, Apple has to either retake the leading edge in design, or drop prices. I found LED screens standard, larger hard drives, and better battery life for prices around that of the current BlackBook.
Steve! Keep up!

I sincerely hope you're right (though i wouldn't mind tomorrow :p). I would like some time to familiarize myself with a new Macbook before trooping off to college...

I don't think Apple will be able to wait that long. $500 PCs will have quad-core CPUs around the beginning of next year (and certainly no later than the middle). Heck, you can already buy a complete quad-core desktop PC from Dell for under 800 bucks.

I don't know about others, but typically if I read "by 2009" then I expect it BEFORE 2009. If it was to happen during 2009 then the word "in" would be more appropriate.

That's exactly what I was thinking!!
