I can tell you with 100% certainty that the entire OS can be made scalable with the most recent Developer Tools CD. Obviously this is something that won't be native to the shipping OS until later ... but it exists. Most apps even scale correctly. It was shown at WWDC this year with the release of OS X 10.4. So your point is very timely.

Check it out here:

http://developer.apple.com/releasenotes/GraphicsImaging/ResolutionIndependentUI.html

If you have the latest XCode installation (free!) go to:

/Developer/Applications/Performance Tools/Quartz Debug

And Choose:
Menu: Tools->Show User Interface Resolution

- Enjoy.

Awesome! I hope the PowerBooks get some attention this week and we start to see this feature in action. Sounds sort of like Expose, though, but with more features.

The idea of using vector graphics in the UI sounds interesting too. I can see icons going to SVG sooner or later, but getting the apps themselves or the whole OS interface to make the switch might take some work. Do I smell Transition #4 on the way?

"We've had a lot of success with scalars in the past. So its time to replace them... with vectors!"

My predictions:

PowerMac:

Low-end: 1x dualcore G5 @ 2.4GHz
Middle: 1x dualcore G5 @ 2.8Ghz
Hi-end: 2x dualcore G5 @ 3.0GHz

Blu-Ray will be BTO (yes, it talks about Mid-East, but it shows that the drives are becoming available)

Exactly what chip do you think Apple is going to use in the PowerMac then? I believe the 970MP can only clock as high as 2.5 or 2.7 GHz...

As for Blu-Ray, it would be nice, but it is still too soon. And regardless, what would people use it for? Has anything been formally released on Blu-Ray yet? How much does blank media cost?

There is a misconception that higher resolution means a better screen. I like the current resolution as it is. Scaling will make the text/icons look better, but for pixel-by-pixel work, an appropriately sized screen is better than cramming the most pixels into the smallest space.

I don't think its a misconception. Higher resolution does mean a better screen, just not a better user experience. If the resolution went up by a factor of 4 over night, no one would complain since the screen would look almost the same. Still, the added resolution would be great for HD content and high-res photo work. Not being able to really see one pixel at a time isn't such a bad thing if the software and the GUI keep up. We have to accept that the hardware will keep getting better and hope that the software can match the pace.

Incorrect. Dual-core itself doesn't have to cause ANY change in the architecture. Hell, Dual-core Athlon 64's can be used in MoBo's meant for single-core Athlon 64's! PCI-Express is a lot bigger architectural change than dual-core is.

And PPC-PM will propably be around for over a year.

You're right, no real changes needed to move from single to dual core.

But my doubt about the 970FX is that IBM will be giving their first 'official' presentation of it the 25th.

http://www-03.ibm.com/chips/power/splash/forum/

You'd figure that IBM would want the first chance to debut the new processors in their own products, before allowing Apple to do so. (given the fact the Steve gave IBM the proverbial 'shaft')

And the eval kit was updated on july 6th, which seems like a short period of time for Apple to finalize a product (depending on exactly what types of revisions have been made)

* Added CPC925 HT link speed optimization code for MapleLite platform
* Added Rock Ridge Interchangeable Protocol extensions to ISO 9660 file system support
* Added support in code for soft power-off function. This will work only with a board EC.
* Added monitor_970 to list of commands that can be executed from POR script
* Removed warning from 400Mhz SDRAM POR scripts
* Changed implementation of setup_mpic() so that it will work at 2.0Ghz in all cases
* Changed AMD 8111 EHC controller errata work-around
* Changed code so that PIBS will boot on either CPU
* Changed implementation of the /ht node range property
* Fixed OpenFirmware problem that allowed the client code to read past end of file
* Fixed SDRAM timing for 333Mhz operation in PIBS code and POR scripts
* Fixed problem with storefile 970pibs command. This command would report IIC errors.

So why should 90% of the users suffer from a horrible picture quality because 10% wants the hi-res so bad? If you want higher-res, buy an add. LCD monitor. If your work really depends on it, facilities will be there.
Or offer higher-res as an OPTION on PowerBooks. A new model, or BTO. There IS some demand for that, and some PC laptops have that. Tiny pixels is a negative for me (and I'd guess for most people: it sounds good on paper but not after 8 hours of use) but I'd love to see the option offered for those that want it.

I'd be really surprised to see Front Row on a PowerMac, or PowerBook.

FrontRow is a consumer product, PowerMacs/Books are Prosumer products.
I know what you mean--a remote control with a PowerMac would seem odd--but note that iTunes and iPhoto and the rest of iLife are also consumer products (and Chess :D ) but pro Macs still include them.

iBook yes. I don't think frontrow will be standard on powerbooks. I'd guess to say eventually you will be able to buy it with a USB infrared device or with a bluetooth remote.
iSight cameras can see infrared all by themselves (they can see in total darkness if you enable that function). So I'm thinking the iMac's iSight may BE the receiver for the remote. If so, then any Mac they add iSight to may be Front Row ready, with no other receiver needed. Just a thought. (I do think iSight won't come to PowerBooks until the Intel change.)

Photoplus expo starts the 20th..Apple's event is the 19th..Day before..

Apple is not attending this expo as it is Windows and all things photo oriented.

Well, I wouldn't be so certain that it has nothing to do with the Photoplus expo. Take a look at this description from Macworld UK:
http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/index.cfm?home&NewsID=12895

"The invitation is in black, and features a camera lens.

It states: "Please join us for a special press conference on the eve of PhotoPlus Expo 2005 as we unveil Apple's latest pro innovations.""

Sounds like it will definitely be related to photography, despite the fact they aren't attending the expo. I think that photo pro app is being unveiled, though I do hope they unleash some new PMs and PBs too. They're both long overdue for some kind of an update.

No, it's not. The IR receiver for the remote is hidden behind the Apple logo in the front of the unit, not the iSight itself. This information has been widely available on the 'net.

Honestly, I wish everyone would just calm down about the FrontRow software. Of course it'll eventually show up on all Macs, but give them some time to integrate it into all the machines. People who are demanding Apple release it now as some kind of add on hack are just not thinking with their heads. FrontRow is a nice selling point for the new iMac, and smart people know that, and will buy an iMac if they truly want it. Don't you think Apple knows this? Besides shutting up everyone's whining about it, what incentive do they have to release it to everyone if it means then that people don't buy a new iMac to get it. Is everyone forgetting that Apple is a COMPANY looking to generate new sales of their hardware!? Give them a break already!

Edit: that wasn't actually directed at you Nagromme, just everyone else who is calling Apple stupid for not giving us all FrontRow yesterday.

I didn't take it personal :D I've heard that repeated about the logo too, but I haven't run across actual confirmation. Does anyone have a link with good confirmation of how IR is received? Maybe it's something that was said at the event?

Listen! Someone’s gonna get hurt

if we don’t get dual dualcore G5s. im serious. I will go crazy with a hatchet in NYC. Pillage n stuff.

Not just a threat. A rumor of a threat on a rumor site! My technogeekiness is gonna blow. My patience has worn thin. Etc., Etc.

I mean it.

Let's start guessing:

12" PB - 1.67 GHz MPC7447a + DL Superdrive, the rest remains the same
15" PB - 1.8 GHz MPC7448 + HR display + DDR2 + ATI X700 64MB ...
17" PB - 2.0 GHz MPC7448 + HR display + DDR2 + NVidia Go 6400 128MB ...

Wishful thinking? :)

How about the NVidia Go 7800 GTX with 256MB VRAM?

Aside from the hardware upgrades (PowerMac and PowerBook) there are probably a few extra surprises in store. One I'd put money on is the PhotoPro app as a higher end replacement for iPhoto. There's incentive to add more CoreImage photo editing options, better database controls, more camera support, and possibly a wider selection of Photo Book options. Beyond that Apple certainly has an updated iSight somewhere in the pipe (better resolution, response time, probably smaller too). Apple could also update the iPod Camera Connector (maybe quietly so, but hopefully soon).

Maybe there will be new Cinema Displays with built-in iSight cameras, but I doubt it. Just explaining the details of the improved PowerMacs and PowerBooks and bragging about PhotoPro would take an hour. Any more than that and those "selected media" will have a collective brain overload.

I read that information on MacWorld's site. I have to assume that the editors know what they're talking about, because it's been mentioned in several articles there on the new iMac, so they seem very sure of this.

Still, like you, I'd like to see it with my own eyes too. Now, if only the Apple SoHo store would actually get those iMacs in stock so I could play with one.

Ok. I'm doing a PhD in physics and I can tell you that you don't want to use your laptop as your primary computing ressource :p I don't know, my 15 inches pbook 1.25 is really nice for mail/latex/analysis ... but you should rely on your university if you need any serious computing power.

Anyway, I really should not buy a new pbook, so I hope that they only get slightly updated this week :D

Mmm, LaTeX. Maybe typing my homework on a mac would make it actually \textbf{fun!}

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remenber that when IBM announced dual-core G5 the clock was set between something like 1.9 and 2.5 ghz...

Will Apple be abble to launch a 3ghz G5?? Also dual-core???

Right on, fellow Brazilian compatriot..! Whoever posted such prediction does not remember what IBM said back then...the dual-dualies are gonna top out at 2.5 GHz...

Is the latest minor update to OS X already out or are we expecting it this week with the new powerbooks?

I think I'm just going to get the fiance the iBook and hold off on getting myself a computer. Now these crazy MacOSRumors ideas of new iBooks are playing with my brain!
