OK here i go.... my predictions

The Pro line will be completely updated

The Powermacs Will feature dual dual core and speeds up to 3 GHz

It will be able to support 16 GBs of Ram.

I agree about the PowerBooks. Counting the Hours until Wednesday. Has a Time been announced for this event yet??

I agree with few people who say there will be no dual core this wednsday - too much of architecture change for a one year run. What I expect:

1. 2.3 Dual G5 AGP + 4 DDR slots
2. 2.5 Dual G5 PCI-Express + 8 DDR2 slots
3. 3.0 Dual G5 PCI-Express + 8 DDR2 slots
4. Small speed bumps and screen updates for PowerBooks.

Possible Front Row app for all Macs.

let's be realistic.
They probably had the architecture designed before they decided to switch to Intel.

Of course considering they sent out invitations, just we don't know. :p

It is at 12 Noon on Wednesday at the Javits in NYC

From Macworld.co.uk:

Apple preps October 19 special event

By Jonny Evans

Apple is gearing up for yet another special event - on the night before a professional photographer's event in New York.

Invitations were despatched to selected media on Friday night. The invitation is in black, and features a camera lens.

It states: "Please join us for a special press conference on the eve of PhotoPlus Expo 2005 as we unveil Apple's latest pro innovations."

The event takes place Wednesday, October 19 at 12 noon (5pm UK time). It's to be held in the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

PhotoPlus describes itself as "the largest and the most comprehensive expo in the photographic and imaging industries." It offers 200 exhibitors, 100 seminars and more.

1024 ram standard

How can the pro laptop line have the same amount of ram as the iBook line - even if it is DDR2 and better speed etc - because to the average consumer who doesn't know this and is deciding which laptop to buy, he/she will think they have the same.

I reckon 120 GB HDD, 1.024 GB DDR Ram, Build in iSight w/ front row and HD displays on 15" and 17" models, or 18" model maybe?

No Freescale PPC's, true. Anyone who thinks that we will get dual-core G4's is smoking something a bit stronger than tobacco. But we will probably get dual-core G5's.

I certainly hope so, the Power Mac G5 is due for something major. The last ones have been minor.

Folks,

The dual core G5s in this crop of PMs will not reach 3 GHz because of IBM's presentation several months ago showing that the top speed was 2.5 GHz. Unless something has changed (and I doubt it), we will NOT see 3GHz on Wednesday.

The ultraportable category may be the hottest segment of the market. I hope Apple delivers a player here, ideally as follows:

12.1" widescreen
1280x800
1.4-1.5 GHz
512MB std, upgradeable to 2GB (most Windows ultraportables stop at 1GB max)
60GB HD expandable to 100GB
Slot-loading DVD-RW (keep the form factor thin)
Bluetooth / WiFi 802.11b/g
ATI Mobility X600 or X700
Gigabit ethernet
Microphone, iSight

This would be Apple's version of the Asus W5A.

I hope they don't take your specs. A possible decrease in processor speed? A possible decrease in hard drive over the current superdrive model? Maybe they shouldn't update. :)

The widescreen and other features sound nice though. :)

Arg, you're right about the processor speed.

However, the base 12" model is 60GB, so no decrease of spec in that department.

I'm concerned about the camera lens on the black invitation. Maybe this is just a software announcement. No hardware.

And I would hope to see HDMI on a Cinema Display sooner rather than later, just to make it future-proof.

The problem with HDMI is which connector to use? 19 pin or 29 pin?

Seriously. At some point, the press is going to get bored with all these "special events."
What are you talking about? Apple is the Belle of the Ball. Steve Jobs on TIME (again) -- they just released a product (nano) that sold over a million units in 17 days -- then they released an ipod that some never thought would see the light of day (video ipod) that's destined to sell millions and millions ... What journalist WOULDN'T be all over a special event from Apple, thanking his lucky stars he got the invitation? I think you're way (way) off base on that statement.

Last weeks Invite said One more thing, and we saw both the iMac and iPod updated.

Sure the invites give somewhat of a clue, but there is definetely not just a photo app. being announced.

You're right, no real changes needed to move from single to dual core.

But my doubt about the 970FX is that IBM will be giving their first 'official' presentation of it the 25th.

Do you mean 970MP ?

http://www-03.ibm.com/chips/power/splash/forum/

You'd figure that IBM would want the first chance to debut the new processors in their own products, before allowing Apple to do so. (given the fact the Steve gave IBM the proverbial 'shaft')

And the eval kit was updated on july 6th, which seems like a short period of time for Apple to finalize a product (depending on exactly what types of revisions have been made)

You said it yourself, there are not many large architectural changes to make the MP work in an FX world. July – October (early) sounds like a good amount of time to update hardware to accept a processor that is intended to run on similar architecture, but then again I am no hardware engineer.

The other issue is, we don’t know what exactly is in the contract between IBM and Apple. It may just be that Apple gets the first bite (no pun intended) at the new IBM products, for the length of their contract, including this new multicore product that IBM is about to release.

I really don’t care if or when they come out with Dual (or more) core processors for the Powermac, but it doesn’t seem far fetched for Apple to have tested, and implemented the Dual Core architecture by this point.

I guess we will have to see what Apple Engineers have tucked in their hat, I just hope it isn’t anything that I feel the need to buy!!
