Merom

So what are you thinking then, Yonah or Merom? Just wondering how long you plan on waiting... :p ;)

I wouldn't discount the PowerBooks updates just yet - as I mentioned in my above post, there definitely exists potential for a decent upgrade to them. What Apple's strategy is with regards to the machine is another matter...

Merom is the sooner one, right? Becasue I bet they'll use it. It'll make the difference between the PPCs and the Intels less dramatic.

So now where are all the people hollering because Apple was SO, SO WRONG not to include pro announcements along with the iPod this week? How could Apple POSSIBLY introduce pro Macs in any other way except at the iPod event? :p

That's the funny thing with complainers - they seem to get awfully quiet when they realize they've been irrational and silly. :p ;)

Now get 'em out the door and close up the PPC design offices. Get those people working overtime on my YonahBook :)

Very good point - this may indeed be the last of the PPC updates for the Pro line - or specifically, the last of the major architectural changes until Intel. I still see the new 970MP PowerMac receiving a speed boost mid-2006, just to tide us over until the Intel PowerMacs in 2007, but this will no doubt be the last of the significant PPC changes to the line. The PowerBooks I'm not as certain about - not sure what Apple will do there, and when they'll be popping an Intel chip in that machine...

I think this depends when Apple is planning on migrating the PowerBook to Intel. If it's sooner rather than later (Yonah), than a "next to nothing" upgrade might be the case, like it or not. However, if Apple is going to wait for Merom, than an upgrade of more substance is likely.
Makes sense, but I'd phrase it in reverse, since Apple can't control Freescale:

IF Freescale makes a really good G4 update possible, then Apple might choose to wait for Merom. If, instead, we see nothing much this time, then Apple's likely to need Yonah. (Which is dual core and will blow away every laptop that ever existed--not a bad step on the way to Merom!) I'm pessimistic about us seeing dual cores or any other excitement from Freescale myself, but that makes me more optimistic about seeing Intel PBs sooner.

I'm wondering why the event is Wednesday if Monday's not a holiday. My guess: something will come out on Tuesday that Apple wants everyone to shut up about the next day :D So, to be a total downer: maybe very minor PB changes on Tuesday, drowned out by really NICE PowerMacs on Wed.

Oh no, my friend, you'd be waiting much longer for Merom than Yonah.  Hmm, what about Dothan? :D

I am expecting Yonah will be the first intel chip to make it into a PB. Simply because the PB hasn't made the 64-bit jump yet, so sticking with the 32-bit architecture wouldn't be seen as a step backwards. Also, I believe that the main reason behind the switch to Intel is the portable line.

Once the Yonah PB is on the street, I will have one.

Very good points. I think that if there is a sizable upgrade next week, then we can expect to wait longer before the Intel switch. If it is crappy, then expect something to be announced at MWSF.

Excellent point - perhaps Apple's decisions on the timing of Intel adoption for the PowerBook ultimately rely on what Freescale can/cannot supply! In that case, perhaps we want Freescale to come up short so we don't have to wait longer until the Merom is implemented... ;)

Someone enlighten me. Why does it have to be Merom or Yonah. This is Apple we are talking about, not the PC industry. Maybe Intel has another code name for Apple's CPU. I would assume if it's the same as the PC counterpart, All apple has to do is plop it into their case and it would be ready tomorrow, but I assume they are designing a modifications to Apple's specs and can call it by whatever Steve Jobs wants, since he's paying the bill to Intel's CEO.

Cool, thanks for that. :) Yes, perhaps we want there to be minimal upgrades to the PowerBooks next week, as that would be a sign that they will be going Intel soner rather than later...

A Yonah PowerBook would indeed be pretty sweet... I hope everything works out for ya!

I'd much rather see Apple move from a relatively stellar dual core G4 arrangement on the PB to an even more stellar Intel processor, than to see a crippled, piece of garbage PB emerge at 1.7ghz and stay that way for the next several months. And so would consumers. I am hoping Freescale has something to show for themselves on Wed.

Oh don't get me wrong, I do too, I was only being half-serious with my above comment. Yes, I don't think anyone truly wants there to be crappy updates to the PowerBooks, regardless of what's around the corner. ;)

That's why I said in my earlier post that I think a 7448 system could definitely be a reality. Upgrade a few other components and you would have a pretty solid PowerBook to last you into the switch to Intel.

Apple has gone to Intel to assure themselves of the fact that Intel will have all those CPUs ready in quantity....
So, Apple will use the exact same CPUs as that Intel will deliver HP, Dell.. or whoever.
There's no way Apple wil ask Intel for Apple-specific CPUs... if so, Apple wil have the same ol' problem.... dependancy of the CPU manufacturer.

By using their mainstream CPUs Apple are certain Intel can and will deliver. If they cant, well, then that goes for all of the customers.

I was about to type up the exact same thing, but you took the words right out of my mouth. ;) Well said. This is essentially one of the most important reasons why Apple is moving to Intel, so trust me, it's a good thing.

I also think Apple will unveil Photo pro (in addition to new PMs and PBs, of course) :)
Maybe a pro version of iPhoto (think it'll outclass what MS and Ulead offer on Windows-Digital Image Suite/Photoimpact killer) with a digital assest management app (I like Digital Image Library-so Apple's should offer a date view, advanceded metadata editing and tagging).

What Time is the event

Hey does anybody know what time and were in NYC....This is going to be My secound powerbook!!!!!!!!!!!

hmm, we'll see... but now that we're on the topic, when the mactels finally come out, will apple have to put those godawful 'Intel Inside' stickers on the covers of powerbooks and powermacs? that would just be...wrong. that would seriously be a deal breaker for me
No.

Apparently Dell wants to start charging Intel for that now, since it takes 30 seconds of the manufacturing time to put the stickers on.

Edit: I removed those stickers from my Thinkpad when I got it - easy to do, and not rocket science.

If for some way apple was able to introduce the first mac mini with intel chip this tuesday sales would go through the roof. I guess they would have to release a new OS to be compatible with the new processors as well. This is just crazy either way.

I actually kinda like Pages. Some of the layouts are pretty nice and simple to use. But, I do use Word most of the time.

I have to agree. I use it all the time for my classroom (handouts, flyers, etc.). I still use Word as my primary WP, but Pages comes in very handy.

I want the PPC PB's to go out with a BANG!

Am I one of the few to wish for the PPC PB's to leave us with a big Good-Bye?

Personally - I'd love to see G5 PB's (maybe Freescale dual Cores thou, but I dont mind at all) because I assume they'd be the last of the PPC PB's.....And i'm thinking of getting one cheap as they bring out the Yonah or Merom PB's.

I study Digital VLSI design at uni - my lecturer and I are quite sad still to see Apple go to Intel - he literally lectures us about how crap Intel are/can be.

I have a Dual 2GHz rev B PM, but my desk still has space for an end of line PPC PB for when I graduate - il miss you PPC, who knows, if IBM get their act together with the 'Cell' in a few years time Apple might say 'hey guys, i know we switched about 8years ago, but IBM make this super duper chip - and we've had our OS's run on PPC since before Tiger!'

You never know!!

Nope. :D Intel will rock, but I'm dreading the move. No redesign, but hopefully some awesome specs. :)

G5's aren't gonna happen. Dual G4's will need a redesign most likely.

Please stop whining about 'stickers'! It's so beyond everything.

Today i bought a pair of polaroids. Imagine with a sticker!! On top of the right glass, my best eye, imagine....

I bite nails. Big problem. Is it still there???
