... and larger laptop drives can be purchased right now. (120G drives from Toshiba and 160 G drives from Seagate.)

160 GB, wow! I had not heard about them. Now should I put a 7200 rpm 100 GB Hitachi (or maybe Seagate) or a 5400 rpm 160 GB Seagate into my Powerbook, I am buying next week? Hard decisions.

ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't wait, I am ready to give all my money to Apple. Just bring super fast dual core Powermacs! Please!!!!!

I wonder if we are going to see updates on the Cinema Display line. I would like a larger than 30" monitor. That would be awesome!

Not gonna happen with a larger display. But...

I heard a rumor that the prices for these displays will be dropped in order to be competitive with others such as Dells. That will be great with the new PowerMacs. :D We shall see what happens on the 19th.

iSight

Other than all the speed bumps.

iSights built into the PB AND into the Cinema Displays. Apple really wants this as evidenced by the new iMac.

iMac G5 became slim... Maybe this could mean a real chance to see a Low Voltage G5 in the PowerBooks...

More importantly, the new iMac got slimmer and now seemingly has 512 megs of RAM soldered to its motherboard (instead of the old way of having 2 slots). Most manufacturers (Apple-included) only does this in laptops/laptop motherboards.

The original iMac was based on the PowerBook's innards (so it was effectively a PowerBook... not to go). Since the developer notes for the new iMac probably won't be released for quite some time, it would be pretty nifty to see that Apple did, in fact, get a low-power G5 to stick in the PowerBook (and it would also likely mean that Intel-based PowerBooks aren't coming anytime soon), and we finally get what we, and Apple, have wanted for a long time... a PowerBook G5.

Expect the unexpected could be the theme for Apple's events of late: whodathunk the iPod Nano would be so small... or the new iMac would be so... released (since the iMac had been updated rather recently and this is no minor update)... maybe Wednesday will bring us what we thought was impossible.

Pro and Photo. I can see a Pro iSight - especially given the iMacs new iSifght is better than the other one.

HD screens - sure.

New displays - HD - sure.

If it's anything like Pages, I'm going to jump off the nearest bridge overlooking concrete.

awww, Pages isn't all that bad, specially considering it's fresh out of beta

Better question: What happened to MWSF - WWDC - AE as the core "events" to launch hardware? I think the answer is Intel.

Nope. Apple began moving away from big shows for product announcements a few years ago. Why? Because in the months leading up to the big shows, sales declined until everyone was holding off waiting for the next version. By only releasing at the big shows, Apple was practically guarateeing themselves a small Osbourne effect. They publicly stated a few years back that they were gradually moving away from this policy.

Of course, I thought we all knew this - we're the people who follow these things more closely than anyone else in the world. Guess not, so it never hurts to remind those who didn't know. ;)

Glad to see the rumors are confirmed.

My predictions for the PowerMacs are 970MPs, and since the iMac set the precedent, DDR2 RAM and PCIe video cards. Look for a larger HD option as well, since the iMac can go up to 500 GB. Dual dual-core would be amazing, but I'm not holding my breath. If they do in fact release this beast though, I'm predicting quite the sticker shock.

As for PowerBooks, it depends how quickly Apple plans on moving them to Intel. Will it be Yonah or Merom? The timing surrounding this will decide how substantial this upgrade will be. I predict 7448 and upgrades to the other components (video card, display, etc.)

Looking forward to yet another Apple event!

I know, I know, I know!!!

Mac mini pro SLI! Just put a 2nd on the top of the 1st and you get double performance...

Buy 4 and you get enough cpu/gpu power for HD video!

I disagree, technology is here, so to produce such display would not be so difficult. Also, Apple might have in mind the home theater consumer that might want such monitor. So it could be both entertainment and professional monitor.
Myself as designer I would love to have a big canvas to do my work.
I hope prices drop for the line up, but such large monitor would not be cheap.
Maybe close to $4k.

I hope it's dual 3 ghz g5s. I'm using an ancient 733 g4 at work and I need a new computer!!!

I'm not, and I think that is doubtful. As I said above, I'm predicting 970MPs, not simple 970 speed bumps. Plus, a 3GHz 970 would have a negative aura surrounding it, reminding people of Job's "promise" from over 2 years ago. Plus, the PowerMacs aren't going Intel until 2007, so they need an update of more substance than just a marginal speed bump.

My predictions:

Dual core PowerMacs
Really, really lame PB updates with crap processor upgrade, if any.

I actually kinda like Pages. Some of the layouts are pretty nice and simple to use. But, I do use Word most of the time.

And, as well as PowerMacs and PowerBooks, there is an outside chance we could see updated displays, although I personally find this pretty unlikely. Nonetheless, if this is a "Pro" event, the displays are consdiered part of the "pro" line of Apple gear, so it's not out of the realm of possibility.

If it's not at this event, I think we will see display updates sooner rather than later though - possibly at MWSF or soon thereafter - the iMac's 20" screen actually has better specs than Apple's 20" display now (yes, it's not the same LCD!) so we know an update must be coming soon.

Who actually believes Apple will wait until June to unveil an Intel based mac? Any guarantees Steve makes will be conservative at best after the 3GHz fiasco. I expect them NLT January but next week would be welcome in my book. Of course there's that little problem of software availability...hmmm.

hmm, we'll see... but now that we're on the topic, when the mactels finally come out, will apple have to put those godawful 'Intel Inside' stickers on the covers of powerbooks and powermacs? that would just be...wrong. that would seriously be a deal breaker for me

Ding, ding, ding...we have a winner. The PB updates are not going to be worth the wait. I am still waiting for the Intel switch.

I think this depends when Apple is planning on migrating the PowerBook to Intel. If it's sooner rather than later (Yonah), than a "next to nothing" upgrade might be the case, like it or not. However, if Apple is going to wait for Merom, than an upgrade of more substance is likely. It would not be hard for Apple to pop in a 7448, which would definitely constitute more than just a "crap processor upgrade", and this wouldn't requite a complete redesign of the machine either. Maybe upgrade the RAm/HD/display and you could have a very decent PowerBook update.

After seeing what Apple did to the iMac, I feel pretty confident that we'll see similar solid upgrades to the PowerMacs and PowerBooks.

So now where are all the people hollering because Apple was SO, SO WRONG not to include pro announcements along with the iPod this week? How could Apple POSSIBLY introduce pro Macs in any other way except at the iPod event? :p

Now get 'em out the door and close up the PPC design offices. Get those people working overtime on my YonahBook :)

So what are you thinking then, Yonah or Merom? Just wondering how long you plan on waiting... :p ;)

I wouldn't discount the PowerBooks updates just yet - as I mentioned in my above post, there definitely exists potential for a decent upgrade to them. What Apple's strategy is with regards to the machine is another matter...
