Opening up Apple's platform is horrible on many levels and it's mostly because people are just stupid. Why? Because as soon as you can side load or point to alternative stores, hacking and Trojan horses will go through the roof. I'm sure a Russian or Chinese sponsored hacking group will open a store with fake apps that will look appealing to lure folks. With no checks and balances, hacks are performance degradation will become an Apple problem and the lawsuits about their devices not working properly or not being secure will pile up.
Yes, because all that has been happening for years on the MacOS platform.

If iOS is truly the security nightmare that you seem to think it is, then Tim Apple better get off his wallet and hire some competent software developers for a change.

Wrong , you can buy PS+ gift cards , but you can no longer (since 2019) buy and download codes from legal vendors anymore for Playstation , if anything you can look at Xbox and say , hey ? this is a PC , not a console !! it has an AMD APU , standard DRAM , standard Nand , standard PCIE , standard connectors , standard PSU , it can run Windows no problem if MS let you , Xbox is a PC that is pre built and crippled by SW , nothing more , it makes MS much more money which is why the peddle it.
Maybe but old codes are still for sale as are used games in Gamestop, private sales on eBay, new physical releases and so on. With the games industry the consumer has choice.

With iOS they do not.

Why should other companies give up 30% of their fees on top of their fees they pay Apple for just being a developer, all for just helping Apple make their platform successful? Without other companies iOS would be pretty useless.
The same thing could be said by you wanting to play in their sandbox have access to 1 billion users with no complexity you code once and it’s deployable to all devices unless you’re specifically coding to the aspects of one particular product line you reached those billion users.
So yes the 30% is the guarantee that Apple Pay support devices for five years minimum up to six years be security updates and patch so that your app allows to run sure they’ve made adjustments along the way but still one thing that you were just in your app and again you do one click and it reaches 1 billion users, let me say this again, billion users.

Microsoft is the only other company with such users but the same thing applies you use their dev tools, the built and updated and gaurantee to work with all iPhone tvOS iPadOS and macOS.

But no apple should just continue to use that cost or bug fixes vs you the developer? Dreamweaver anyone?

First off, yes please.
Second off, consoles are different from general purpose computing devices.
Can you tell me the difference between an Xbox and a PC ? aside of course from MS saying so ?
Xbox has an AMD x86 APU with a standard set of instructions both For CPU & GPU , it has a standard SSD , standard DRAM , standard display connectors , standard PSU , its a PC.

If MS wanted to run windows on it , it wouldn't be more then few days to enable it for them.

Please keep it technical if you can.

MacOS has had its fair share of viruses that spread like wildfire and took years to find. They started because users downloaded apps from other sources.

when did countries and the EU start thinking they can tell companies how to run themselves.
Consumers have decided I want either Google or Apple, not seeing many complains.
A lack of a third option does not mean their isn’ta desire for one or that companies aren’t creating artificial barriers to entry to prevent other options from entering the market.

and, “when did countries and the EU start thinking they can tell companies how to run themselves?” Since they were tasked with governing, on or about the beginning of the Neolithic Revolution, maybe even before, hunters and gathers needed to know what to hunt and gather after all, lest someone pick poisonous berries or something. Governments have regulated commerce as long as the concept of governance has existed.

There are two dominant platforms, and you can't play any game on either, without it being licensed from those platforms, and the platform owner gets a 30% cut.
Or I could buy an Xbox. Or a Switch. Or a Steamdeck. Or a PC. Or build a PC. And buy my software from Gamestop. or eBay. Or swap games with a friend. Or buy voucher codes from CDKeys. Or Steam. Or the Epic store. Or the Microsoft Store. Or GOG. I can if I so wish set up my own physical store selling games.

On Android and PC I can access innumerable emulators allowing access to an infinite amount of games, most of which cannot be brought new anymore.

On iOS its Apple's way or the highway. I have no choice at all.

And what % of revenue do Sony get to allow a game on their platform? There is no difference.
It doesn't matter. I can buy the game off a complete stranger and give Sony 0% if I so choose.

Apple operate one storefront for multiple devices. If I want to buy a game for my iDevice I have to go through Apple. If I want a game for my PlayStation I can buy from Sony, ebay, Amazon, CDKeys, Gamestop and so on.

There is a massive difference.

That's not the point. You said Apple doesn't control which apps I can and cannot download.
It is the point because lack of porn apps has nothing to do with the current governmental legislation being discussed. If lack of porn was the definition of anti-competitive activity then there would a gazillion companies in violation. Nobody complained to the EU or U.S. Congress or government of Japan that lack of porn apps = anti-competitive activity.

Considering Apple invented the "smartphone market", I take serious objection with the idea that outsiders want to start regulating it just because Apple did so phenomenally well with it.

But all Apple had to do was be fair and not be so heavy handed with their rules, without all the selective enforcement and hypocrisy, and they could have avoid this entirely. For that, they get what they brought onto themselves.

its time for Apple to let their users be responsible with their own devices and instead using this notion of security. I'm sure most people have common sense ? hmm maybe not.

Standard OIl also says Hi.

The American culture of defending monopolistic companies because of some misguided belief that the government should keep its noses out of corporations beggars belief, especially as the political party espousing such a rhetoric seeks totalitarian control of everything you read or watch. Its not the democrats banning books in Texas and Florida....

Emulators aren't legal though unless made and distributed by the manufacturer of the games.

Maybe they need regulation, too... but the PS5 is not exactly a general purpose device, and the game consoles are generally (at least initially) sold at a loss to create the demand for the software titles released on it. Can you imagine Apple selling a product for a loss?? Hahahaha...
PS5 and Xbox are both general purpose devices , as I stated before in this thread , the fact they are running SW that lets them to exactly what Sony or MS wants you to do is because they decided that's how they want you to use their device.

Xbox can run Windows with ease , as it has a standard X86 APU from AMD , with a standard SSD , standard DRAM , standard PSU , standard display drivers and ICE , Sony is similar and can run Linux if Sony wanted it to run it.

Also Sony and MS aren't selling their product at a loss , the same way Fortnight is not free to play from a business model , you need to think critically before saying stuff like that , if you do , it would be obvious to you that Sony and MS are not losing on selling consoles ..... they just make their money in a different way.

These are two separate points, neither in yours or Apple's favor. Apple can control what software I'm allowed or not allowed to install while simultaneously being anti-competitive in other ways. These aren't mutually exclusive things and I was simply pointing out that you're also wrong that Apple doesn't control what software you're allowed to install. Apple disallowing certain categories of apps is just the cherry on the anti-competitive sundae. How about game streaming apps like Stadia and Xbox Cloud gaming? So much for your claim that devs get to choose whether to develop for iOS or not.

Emulators are legal; ROMs are not unless backups of games you have already paid for.

But on a PC or my Android phone I can play backups of my old NES, SNES and PSP titles if I so wish.

On iOS? Nope.
