Yeah but I can't think of many times they've had to actually pull a beta this late in the process. That a bug that big could make it through a month from launch is not a great sign. By now most of the big bugs should be worked out or at least well documented. They didn't even know it was in there!

Sigh. Relax. Things are working exactly how they should be working. Betas are TEST software. They know their are bugs and they use the user best to test and report on those bugs. In this case it was a Developer BETA - so they are using their most experienced users at testing and reporting bugs. Sometimes bugs are benign, sometimes more serious. In this case they found what they consider a serious bug before they released the BETA to the public. It's the natural workflow when creating software. It's not a bad sign at all. It's a great sign. Things are going exactly how they should. beta TEST!!! it's going to be ok.

I’m having these issues on my 8 plus. Tried a few restarts today and the long app loading issue happens after every restart. Things speed up after 10-15 mins of restart.
I did a reset yesterday after the installation and the problems were pretty bad I saw that it was bricking some devices so I really didn’t want to keep pushing it. Today seems to be a little bit better so didn’t bother resetting. Like you said still a delay opening some apps but things did speed up. The main issue was the app switcher which just froze for a good 20 seconds. I still have the notification there is an update.

I guess it’s all in all not horrible any thoughts on a fix or another beta being released sooner?

What did they do that is damn impressive? They made an update unavailable.
They did that thing they did, which is stellar spanktacular

This is not how software engineering works. Fixing bugs (and implementing new features) will sometimes introduce new bugs which will not necessarily be less major than the bug/feature need that preceded the work. In other words, sometimes implementing a new feature or bug fix introduces even worse bugs. It happens! And it’s fixable, of course, but it takes time.

This is why you sometimes see an update or a feature get yanked from a beta to ship in a later release. If it’s not verifiably ready—through unit tests, UI tests, and/or human experience—to ship, it shouldn’t ship.
It's generally how it works on my projects. If I'm having major issues late in the game then I didn't do something right because it's never happened to me before.

If you haven't updated to the new iOS 12 beta 7 on your iOS device as of yet, you may notice that the over-the-air update option is no longer available, and that's because Apple has pulled the download.

Apple appears to have removed the beta 7 update because of performance issues.

On the MacRumors forums, there are multiple reports of problems when tapping on an icon, which can result in a very noticeable pause before the app launches. As MacRumors reader OldSchoolMacGuy explains:Some users have said that the pausing issue disappeared for them after five or 10 minutes of using the iPhone, while others appear to be having continual problems.

Prior to when Apple pulled the update, several MacRumors readers had warned other users against installing the update on their iPhones. There have also been reports of other issues, such as apps freezing, Notification Center freezing, Lock screen freezing, and in-app functions refusing to load.

Apple was planning to release a public beta of iOS 12 today, but that may be delayed until these issues have been addressed in an updated release.

iOS 12 beta 7 is a significant update because it removes the Group FaceTime feature that has been present in iOS 12 since launch. Apple now says Group FaceTime will launch in an update coming later this fall.

Update: Apple has also removed the update from the Apple Developer Center.

Their response time. Try getting that on Android. It is in fact ok to credit Apple when they do something right, or IMHO, impressive.

And what is the deal with people talking about Apple releasing buggy garbage? It's called a beta program. They didn't force you to take part in it. And it's designed to work on 6 years worth of hardware, of course they will have issues here and there to iron out.

You set the bar very, very low for a trillion dollar company. I’m glad they pulled a bad software update, but I’m not sure I’d clamor to attend the award show you’re putting on for them right now...

Of course bugs can be introduced. Is that really your point? The fact this is late stage and slipped through Apple’s internal testing is what’s troubling. Apple share their betas with developers so developers can test THEIR software, not Apple’s. The internal testing at Apple is supposed to pick up major issues in their OS.

Imagine Microsoft was just about to release Windows 10, and a few weeks before scheduled release they missed a major bug that caused severe problems (endless boot loops, sluggish behaviour), that users spotted. That’s a VERY bad sign and would be a mark against them.

At this stage in the development process, the bugs being discovered should be minor. The codebase should be thoroughly tested and stable.

These things do happen, but they’re not a good sign. I’d rather Apple postponed release than release something that was rushed. Wouldn’t you?

As has been mentioned, this is a beta, so there are really no bars here.

I remember installing my first beta - the iOS 7 beta, on my iPhone 4s and being appalled by the terrible performance. I kicked up the same fuss you did. It was only with time that I slowly came to understand the nature of a beta software and why it was as problematic as it was.

We have no idea why this latest version is so buggy, but the whole point is precisely for Apple to make all the mistakes they need to make here so they don’t have the same problems when the final version of said software is made available for public consumption.

To me this is not a portend of anything that can be gleaned as to how the GM release will be. iOS 8 heralded by some as the greatest release ever had one of the updates bricking phones.

This would be much more troubling if this bug made it into production.

There are “bars” for beta software. Beta means something, it’s not an arbitrary word. Early betas will be buggier than later ones, for example.

Thanks for your help. I can see a way to ignore you, I’m just looking for a way so I can’t see what you write.

Whatever floats your boat I guess. Won’t stop me from replying though.

About the beta, I’m sure Apple has its goals, however I dont view this as “disastrously” as you do. At any rate assigning a label; “good beta”, “bad beta”, “best beta”, won’t change the outcome. What will change the outcome is the testing and feedback from the devs and public, along with apple’s internal testing.

So what happens now?

I have b7 installed already

Will Apple push out a b8 or a new b7 ?

Downloading Beta 8 right now.

Well, just finished and rebooted. Have not noticed any performance issue but the notification on the Settings icon is still there.
