Yeah it was a big thing at the time.

They do? Where is the general consensus that “Apple ships crap”? Who excuses that?

Not in my opinion. But of course with over one billion customers there are varied opinions.

The new Photos app, the Mail app changes, System settings on MacOS, all these changes recently are horrible and unusable but people excuse them because Apple's software today is such a mess it's expected. We've been worn down.

I like the photos app changes. I’m ambivalent about the mail app changes and I don’t use macOS.

Nobody is excusing anybody but all of us have a different take on things.

That's not what the article says though:

"Some people in Apple's AI division think the features could even be "scrapped altogether" and rebuilt from scratch."

You're conflating a possibility with a certainty.
Point taken. But you have to admit, there's some problems there

all I'm saying is that it REMINDS me of the Copland debacle.

This might be one of the sloppiest rushed rollouts in Apple history. Think we're going to see a lot of people "stepping down" at Apple when the dust settles.

Recorded an 8 minute phone call with my doctor’s office this morning. Apple Intelligence has been trying to transcribe the call for at least 10 minutes. When I get the money I’m paying off my iPhone and switching to Galaxy. So sick of it.

Next will be dropping the iPad and replacing it with a Galaxybook Pro. At least Samsung makes an effort to innovate… Ring, AI, etc.

"reasonable expectations". there are consumer protection laws that say manufacturers can't advertise features that don't exist. Otherwise, any company could advertise crazy futuristic features saying they will come later. It's BS. Apple's intentions were to have AI sooner than later but is failing.

Is iPhone 17 (1 year) or iPhone 18 (2 years) reasonable? Not to people who bought an iPhone 16 based on AI promises. That clearly shows Apple should have waited to announce it on the iPhone 17 or 18.
I was just about to spend in two of it's products, but seeing what they're doing I'll wait as long as they keep it's seriousness as a company.
Here one who bought the 16pro max and have nothing new (advertised)... Oh yeah, a mess of a buggy ios18, what a shame of version...
Apple used to keep what was promised. That's why lots of people buy it's products

The features were advertised to be coming later. So if they come at all (1 to 2 years range) it's not false advertising. You're going to lose that lawsuit.
They are gonna lose millions if people gets angry because of this. Much worse letting down people rather than pay for a class action lawsuit. That's the keystone of any business, their clients.

I agree, but the people who you mentioned that panicked didn't think to read the entire message before reaching out to you? They just read the summary and immediately reacted? Were these coworkers, friends or very young people?
1 co-worker, no friends and family (though I can think of one or two that might do something like that). The other ones have been, I guess I would call them customers? Clients? I’m involved in some non-profit organizations that deal with the public.

IMO, this is nothing new. I’m sure everyone has experience with that person that reads the first sentence of your email and then replies to that or calls you about that and then when you ask them about the important questions and problems you brought up later in the email they’re like what??? I think it’s the exact same people that do that, just now they’re relying on generative AI and trusting it too much.

I suppose one could argue that my problem is people, not Apple. But Apple certainly enables this behavior and makes it worse. And don’t get me wrong, I’m sure if you ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, et al. to summarize a 50 word text message down to six words it would get it wrong also. The whole idea of summarizing potentially long communications into less than 10 words displayed on a lock screen is just idiotic. It is an ill conceived idea that should’ve never made it past the drawing board. It’s clear they’re trying to address a real problem, which is people being bombarded with so many notifications that they miss the ones that are important. I tried the notification summary feature that gives me an update several times a day, but that didn’t work for me either. But I digress….

Apple needs new leadership immediately
I have to agree with this. When a multi trillion dollar company with a massive staff, and what is claimed as the most powerful chip in a phone, can’t bring to the table what was advertised. The problem isn’t the employees, it’s the ones running the ship. What a monumental excrement show. I do wonder about Apple lately, how can you have so much money, but still have so many bugs, issues and poor releases? It really is just about the shareholders now and not its customers anymore.

It's a leadership issue. A company like Apple has to have a strong-willed visionary at the top. We are in another Spindler era. The difference between now and the early 90's is Apple has the cash and customer base to live for decades like this. But the charm of the company is gone, they're basically IBM now.

I know we're shi**ing on Apple here and I'll get flak for defending Apple, but they're trying to do something that no one has really done before: create a SOTA LLM that will run on 8GB of RAM.

Now back to shi**ing on Apple:
they did this to themselves by putting in such low base amounts of RAM for so long.
Well, Siri never succeeded in what it was sold as to the public. It's not about bashing Apple. I am just pointing out that neither Siri, nor AI have yet been successful by this company and it's surprising considering the resources they have.

As I am acutely aware as a user of Apple products for over 20 years, many of us have stockholm syndrome.
And Apple doesn’t care that MR posters believe their customers have Stockholm syndrome.

If that’s the way you want to view this, I’m not going to change your mind. But you can’t universally group hundreds of millions of customers into one category.

Apple’s marketing used to have clarity, vision, and selling the why. Now, it’s bloated with pretentious drivel, empty spectacle, or outright misfires. Really pathetic.

Agreed
With regard to emails, this problem is already solved, if only folks could learn how to properly write a "subject".

It’s like MHBHD always says, never buy a phone with the promise of future software updates. Buy it for what it is now.
It’s those “apple takes its time to release things better than rush it like android” jingoists 😂

Where are those “Apple takes its time to release something “ people 🤣🤣
I remember the days when Apple wouldn’t announce products until they were shipping. They were glorious. Steve Jobs was sexy. The world was great.

Available later today!

Yes, I know steve pre-announced the original iphone.
