Had to do a clean install of OS X a few weeks ago. Forgot to download and install Aperture. Need to spend $10/month for Adobe CC photography plan now.

Are you serious? I was about to swap the HDD for an SSD in my mid-2010 MBP and then do a clean reinstall of Mavericks. Hope this isn't permanent.

Yes, you can back it up (and should) to any drive.

Thanks. I'll save the zip file and the 'Install Mavericks App'.

With the Install Mavericks App that is backed up, can I definitely drag it back to an applications folder of a mac (that doesn't have the mavericks install app) and make a bootable USB so I can resinstal Mavericks on any Mac whilst booting via the USB?

Just one week after the Xcode debacle, caused by people downloading from unofficial sources, Apple blocks official downloads of their software.

And Mavericks isn't supported any more? It's not even two years old!

I think this is a case for Taylor Swift !

But seriously, depending on the age of your Mac you should have the install DVDs' or CD's that came with the Mac.

If you are a knowledgeable computer user, you know you should back up your software purchases.

Macs are so well built that many still can do a good job with Mountain Lion.

Before having all panties in a twist , there are tons of sites with these old OS version.

Still use it with my Nikon D7000. I suppose that it would be useless with recently released or yet to be released cameras, but that;s not what I use.
Yeah, I mean I use it with my Canon 6D. It still works great. I tried Lightroom but it's a complete mess. Apple got many things right with Aperture. Not sure why Adobe can't seem to crack the code?

I ended up cancelling my Lightroom subscription and decided to ride out Aperture till I'm forced to move. To me, backing up my photos is huge. I love Aperture vaults. LR has nothing even close. If you aren't going to help me protect my photos then why bother trusting your program with my photos?

Upgraded my iMac to Yosemite last week and lost iPhoto in the process, luckily iPhoto was still in my "Purchased" tab so was able to download it. Good thing I didn't wait another week with updating. Absolutely hate "Photos", have used it on my MBP since Yosemite was released last year and can't stand it.

Just this weekend I picked up a Mini 1,1 for the sole purpose of having an offsite crashplan host. I have few other White MBs and iMacs that will not run new OS.

I really hope this is a temp only while they sort out the xcodegate.
And I hope that tech support professionals start to write Cook and co how happy they are now.

So when my old computer becomes obsolete because I can't "rent the software" for it, I should get a refund for the brick sitting on my desk. Apple can't have it both ways, sell you a computer that you cannot use in 6 years and then say well sorry we pulled the rental agreement on the software that makes said machine run.

You are conveniently forgetting that you could (and should) have saved the install disks or backed up whatever you installed as the latest OS.

But, I agree a warning would have been better than just pulling them.
Would still have the usual numbness off guard.

Dumb PR move.

BTW, Apple has numerous channels for support questions and feedback, I recommend everyone who finds this situation unacceptable to tell them directly via one of those routes.

Planned obsolescence has always been part of Apple's strategy. Except when people have VOICED IT on macrumors, they've been silenced.

I'm rather pissed off with iPhoto disappearing. After a brief stint (and lots of frustration) with Photos I went back. So now I can't do a clean install, because I don't have the installer. Thanks Apple.

Thanks. I will zip it now, but theoretically, as I believe Zip files too can get corrupted, can I also copy the whole "install mavericks" app onto a USB?

When I then run the app on another mac, will it work successfully, or do I need to make it bootable or something?

I believe that would work just by extracting it to the Applications folder without needing to make it bootable, but I've never tried it. If it needs to be bootable you could make it then I suppose.

Thankfully I have a copy of each OS on a thumb drive I built using Terminal. I can understand them pulling 10.9, but 10.7 and 10.8 were paid upgrades and some older Intel Macs can't update past 10.7. What are they supposed to do now?

I'm assuming this also means they have stopped selling the app download of 10.7 on their site as well as boxed copies of 10.6 and 10.6 Server.

However - if you have an older iOS device - it's like them pulling the last available OS available that you can update too. Then - if you have an issue with your device, you're stuck.

Not everyone updates every couple of years.

The app store isn't the only place to update OS X. It's very rare you reinstall OS X, and if you are on an older version of a Mac not supported by El Capitan, then you are using a disk to install. No issues here.

The problem is that some people have equipment connected to their macs that require the old operating system
Version. Buying new laboratory equipment in the hundreds of thousands is not an option. So we are stuck with older is versions because apple is not very good in keeping its system
Backwards compatible. This is one area where I have better experiences with Windows than with macs.

I agree that this is unfortunate, but Yosemite was released a year ago. Are developers really that far behind? Honestly, I don't know.

Except they don't force users to run the latest version of iOS.

Actually they do.

As far as backing up an application after installation, doesn't apple automatically delete the installer after the installation is complete? The end-user would have to be tech-savvy enough to create and move a backup before doing the installation.

PLUS, Apple markets the App store features as including the ability to access your software anytime from the cloud.

I call foul on removing older versions from the App Store.

For everyone here to agrees with this (i.e., "move on, you don't need old software", etc.), it's the PRINCIPLE. It's BIG BROTHER telling us (again) what we can (and cannot) have. What's the harm in leaving it? What's the point in removing it? Maybe in giving everyone more iCloud storage, they needed to free up some server space. ;)
It's probably why Apple can theoretically do as they please; there will always be people who blindly support them regardless of how anti-user freedom a decision they make. I'm just happy that I always keep software on an external drive such that I don't have to download them multiple times. However, I'm sure they are many people who rely on the App Store.

You should never purchase software on the Mac App Store if you have the option of purchasing and downloading it directly from the developer's site. Obviously that's not the case with Apple software anymore, but for all other purchases, avoid avoid avoid.

The reasons are too numerous to list.

Actually the full installers for leopard, leopard server, snow leopard and snow leopard server ARE still available from the developer site.

I'm going to download them but also UPLOAD them to somewhere else in case apple remove them.

I think we should also do this with ANYTHING we download from apple from now on.

Download AND THEN UPLOAD!

I didn't see this one coming :(
Try doing a Restart of your Mac, and hold down the Option Key while it is Restarting. You should see the Recovery Disk (it is a separate Partition that was set up when you installed the Operating System Apple has since pulled from the App Store. You can Tab the Cursor to that Recovery Image and Restart your computer from that Image, one of your choices should be to ReInstall that version of the OS X on your internal Hard Drive - you can also Repair Permissions etc from that image...

I have purchased Lion and Lion Srvr and Mt. Lion but no Mt. Lion srvr.
Does the dev site grants you access to 10.6-10.10?
