I have a MBP purchased new with Lion installed in June 2012. Had the dreaded ? folder appear after a restart the other day and discovered I couldn't use the internet recovery option. After spending well over two hours on the phone with senior level tech support, they made an appointment for me on Wednesday at the Genius Bar (four hour drive round trip). This MBP is only three months out of warranty. So I am currently using my 2006 MBP also running Lion. This appointment will be interesting to see how they handle the failing hard drive and what OS they replace with.

Do you really plan on installing Lion & Mountain Lion on your computers? It's old. Let it go.
Don’t be a Cook’s Ass-kissing apologist. Plenty of people have older hardware which works fine provided it has its original OS installed, and poorly when a more modern OS is installed. There is no advantage to upgrading this hardware or the OS it’s running.
And for the love of computing, STOP DOWNLOADING TORRENTS!

Any torrent can be compromised potentially sending all your data to the seedy armpits of the internet your were surfing to get the torrent.

I’ve grown to trust torrents more than I trust downloads from bloated corporations run by weasels who leverage slave labor and peddle wristwatches on the street.

What has made me smile is that I have versions of Windows going all the way back to 95 - good old Microsoft.

Now who's being autocratic?

The oldest OS in support is Vista (until April 2017), so regardless if people have copies of old OS's, you'd have to be absolutely mental to be running something full of holes as your daily driver.

there are tons of sites with these old OS version.

Downloading software from unofficial sources is unsafe. That's why I mentioned the Xcode debacle from last week.

Granted, it could be made safe if a trusted entity provides checksum data and people actually check their downloads--but I suspect that hardly anyone actually does that.

Okay, for people that like to say things like "time to move on, get over it", I don't think you understand what some of us are faced with. Here is a good example: I have a large format printer that is old but still working just fine. I use a software print RIP with it. That cost $2500. It is only compatible with some older versions of OS X. So if I upgrade my OS on this old iMac that runs it my old software won't work. If I buy a new printer I need to buy a newer version of the print RIP software. So when you tell those of us in these situations it's just time to move on, then I should just go buy all new everything? In this case that could cost well into five figures.
Sometimes the cost is much greater than just buying a new Mac.

Can someone tell me why I should trust Apple with keeping necessary files for old apps that need to be downloaded afterwards thanks to App Thinning?

Hi friends.

I have an old app, wich wasn't supported with new updates, but it did still work, that suddenly has dissapeared. I use this app every day, and there's no app that does the same in the same way. I had it on my purchased list, but it's not there anymore.

I have this app installed on my mac as of now, but I'd like to format my mac when its El Capitan's time, and do a clean install of El Capitan. Then this app will be lost forever, because it is not outside the App Store (is a very rare app).

Please, tell me, What can I do in order to keep this app. It is a 2Mb app, and I'd like to know if I go to the Applications folder and copy that app, will I be able to install by copy-pasting it? Is there a better way to preserve this app? Or is it as easy as dragging the icon from the Applications folder to a external hard drive, and then, copy from there?

Thank you!!!

PD: No problem for previous OS X, I have each version stored on my external Hard Drive, but other apps have disappeared... And I never thought It would happen, so suddenly. Now, I want to keep the ones I have installed on my mac.

This breaks the implicit trust about purchased apps. When I started buying from the app store, it was to replace the experience of "having box with disc inside sitting on my shelf." In the original app store model, I always had access through the App Store to that box with the disc, even after bigger and better things came along.

Now it seems that perhaps Apple doesn't share that same understanding. That's a real shame, but I guess it's their prerogative.

But I would have thought they would have had to explicitly let everyone know. People paid money for this stuff (at least, Aperture). People have machines that aren't supported by the latest versions of OS X. Apple is being foolish to rip away access without giving fair warning about downloading and making a personal backup (which, in my mind, is a wrong-headed expectation anyway, but whatever).
That's pretty much how I feel. I do not remember seeing an expiration date on the licenses I paid to use. I think I remember that Apple did something similar a while back about some movies, like maybe even some Disney movies.

I detest this "let it go" crowd. What they are really saying is: "this doesn't affect me and I lack the insight/imagination to see how it might affect others. Furthermore, I'll post something condescending to this effect because I'm a self-centered prick."

BTW, it looks like they've also pulled the OS X Server upgrades for those OS versions. If you need it spelled out for you why that's a downright awful decision, then you lack simply lack professional experience and are not worth the explanation.

I hate narcissists.

I said I had the versions not that I run them, though I could run them as a VM.

If you are like me and want the option of opening up older Aperture DBs, here is the link for ver 3.4.5: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1657?locale=en_US

I have it upgraded to ver. 3.6, and I wonder if it will be possible to simply copy the Aperture file, and then move it to a clean install and have Aperture working? Otherwise, install ver. 3.4.5 and have it working, and then move ver. 3.6 "on top of it"?

Otherwise I don't know what to do... I am not migrating to that piece of ***** Photos and though I use Lightroom and Photoshop, I still revert to using the workflow in Aperture.

If anyone has a link to the Aperture 3.6 installation download, I surely appreciate it:)

Imagined this would be a problem years ago with the rise of digital downloads, so I avoid them when I can. For similar reasons I don't put any money into buying apps or games for my iDevices and stick to portable gaming with my 3DS and Vita.
Glad to see my paranoia was justified!

Terrible timing, both with the XcodeGhost thing, and with some developers worrying that the Mac App Store is never going to improve.

What has made me smile is that I have versions of Windows going all the way back to 95 - good old Microsoft.

Microsoft's software lifecycle for operating systems is fantastic. Run Windows 7 -> productive until 2020.

But Microsoft has also recently pulled the Visual Studio 2010 Express downloads, which I needed to compile software that was *gasp* older than 2013. I really don't like this trend.

Actually the full installers for leopard, leopard server, snow leopard and snow leopard server ARE still available from the developer site.

Edit: Reading comprehension fail on my side. I see the downloads as well.

I was planning to set up a Mavericks VM to test software...arggh. I've already made it a habit to archive old versions of Xcode, just not OS X itself. =/

I made about 10 soft copies of XCode 3 and two of SL and I bought the Lion USB Stick back when it was released. Never regretted to do this. Believe me, there are occasions where you just need those things. Saved me the money for two new laptops plus all my apps are still available to my faithful SL-Customers.

Slowly moving forward though. El Cap will probably become my main system for the next half decade. Even I have to say: It is time.

OK, so now that we know we're just renting software from Apple, can someone point to a "how to" for downloading both OS and app installers from either the App Store or from some other source? Looks like anyone who needs long-term guaranteed access to older software will need to make their own DVDs.

The fact they removed still usable software and operating systems that either A) came with the device you bought, or B) Bought outright.

If they don't want them in the public store thats fine, but removing them from personal collections is asinine. if they do that with music, movies, tv, shows, etc...

However, they won't allow one to remove or permanently delete apps (free or otherwise) from your store collection, just simply hide it? Yeah you can hide it, but maybe I want to permanently remove a bunch of free apps and never see them in my app store.

Yes, it might well work if you simply copy the app to another drive and back, most apps are quite self-contained (but there are exceptions).

However, my advice before a major upgrade or clean reinstall would always be to do a full, bootable clone of your mac (ideally more than one) in case you don't like the new OS or something unexpected breaks that you need to work, or you need to recover anything later (whether Apps or personal documents or any other files).

Also Apple might fix the purchases list and return you your app soon, fingers crossed. But this is a timely reminder coming just as El Capitan is due for general release that if you want a job doing properly, do it yourself and make back-ups (not that I'm excusing Apple doing this, whether through intent or accident).

I have the "Install Mavericks" application saved in my Applications folder. How can I save this, like on to an external USB or something, or better yet, upload it to Dropbox?

Can anyone help?

to create a bootable USB installer,
Insert USB formatted "Extended Journal"
go to Terminal and type the following - except insert whatever you named the USB into the "quote" spot and remove the "quote" marks.

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/“USB device name” --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app —nointeraction

be patient - it will create the bootable installer for you

Hey all,

I've read most of the pages of comments here on this thread. There are many valid points made by different groups of users here, and I appreciate and agree with most for the most part. However getting to about page 8 of comments There is one point no one seems to have made which I want to bring out now.

From my understanding in recent months. All versions of mac os x before Yosemite 10.10.5 have un patched security holes. and some major one3s. I don't have the information in front of me at the moment, and I don't know specifics. and Aperture I can't speak for. OS X however may have been pulled so apple isn't liable for any attacks on unlatched software. So maybe in their defense by pulling the software rids them of all liabilities if something were to happen, so they're basically if you want older software run it at your own risk, we're no longer liable if something happens.

I have my os x installers backed up personally so i didn't even know they were missing until i saw this article.
