The purest form is if the government told Apple, and everyone else in the country, to remove those reviews. OR if Apple, as a government entity, were to remove those reviews.
As Apple is a private company, with the same rights as any individual, it’s more like not inviting someone to your house just so they can scream “poppyhead” at you over and over again. In other words, just a “good idea”.

Um, no.....

Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication, or other information, on the basis that such material is considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or "inconvenient."[2][3][4] Censorship can be conducted by governments,[5] private institutions, and corporations.

I guess Apple does not like the truth of what people actually think about its products.

next, little timmy is going to by off macrumors and shut it down because a lot of the comments here hurt his feelings
Little Timmy is going to have to buy off a WHOLE lot more than that... in fact, I think I’ll set up an anti-Apple site and just wait for the check from Apple to buy me off :)

Really, though, your post at least recognizes the fact that the reviews going away changes nothing as long as the hundreds of thousands of other sites and forums exist. If their goal was “controlling the message” it’s quite ineffective :) But there ARE those that will still say that’s precisely why it happened.

But fake one-star reviews of products that sell hundreds of millions of units per year? Yeah, I don’t want that.

Turns out Apple really does know best! You nailed it. Thanks Tim Apple!

How do you know they are fake, because you say so?

Apple really does know best?? really like the keyboard design of the MacBooks?
Or like the old trashcan Mac Pro design?

Being as arrogant as Apple, will not get you anywhere...

It's funny how when an Apple product has bad reviews, Apple lovers would say those reviews were written by Apple haters. Because of course, Apple would never make a bad product or overcharge for it. SMH.

Reviews are broken everywhere. Almost every product I look at has a huge number of 5 star and 1 star reviews. It’s amazing that the same products both work fabulously and are just trash that fail to work at all.

2019 - Made a bad product? No problem. Just blame the fans/consumers for being "toxic" and then release more garbage. Easy-peasy.

Thanks, it’s SO easy when people pwn themselves. :)
Um, no.....
Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication, or other information,
All of Apple’s products are horrible and no one should ever buy or own them!

Now, we’ll just wait to see if this here speech, public communication in other words, is suppressed.

I'm really not understanding your point. What does MacRumors.com lack of censorship in a particular area have to do with Apple.com's active censorship in that area?

What does any of that have to do with what I said: “What do you do about all the fake 1-star reviews for AirPods—a product that has tens of millions of satisfied users?” Yes, it seems like an attitude readjustment may be in order.

If someone is depending on users reviews to solely be the deciding factor then that person has an issue with making a decision. Either a person is leaning to purchase or not, anyone on the fence there is a return window from Apple and Amazon. Just because a product works for you or not does not mean I will have the same experience as EarPods is a personal fit, feel and ones range of audio capacity. I may be able to listen to a wider range of audio frequency then another person, that does not mean the specific audio device is junk, it is just what I feel is acceptable to my listening capacity and budget.

Rating of any kind is subjective also in this regard as I mention I may have no experience with AirPods and in comparison I may have used cheaper BT earphones, or I may have used expensive ones and the APP sounds mediocre to me. As mentioned there are many variables and looking at the rating means nothing to a potential buyer, try them out if you don't like them return them within the window, done. What are you complaining about the inconvenience? Someone may say XYZ product is a 5 star product and many people agree, I may have a difference experience and give it 1-3 stars, does that make my personal opinion and experience fake or invalid. If you cannot afford APP and star ratings is the deciding factor then I suggest be on the safe side and don't bother and one is seeking public validation.

No they didn't. Xcode ratings and macOS are all visible on the AppStore. Try again.

You didn't read my post. They removed them, but then put them back.

So Apple has the choice to have reviews turned on when they are good, but them bury them when they are bad. How convenient.

Apple has lost all integrity due to this.

And Apple is stating this blame where?

Reviews are at the least highly emotional when written by buyers. That in itself distorts reality. Don’t act as if that’s the first website you came across that doesn’t allow you to write reviews.

There’s nothing misleading about it, you just misread. I said verified purchaser helps, did you miss that?

I said 10-15 minutes reading and analyzing. There’s no filter for that, is there, so your comment makes zero sense.

There is a filter, may I suggest to personally familiarize oneself with the review and comment section on Amazon. You can not only filter out for "verified purchasers" but also by star rating and product configuration. I believe you are being disingenuous, how many reviews does one need to read to make a decision. Either one was inclining to purchase or not, the big thing on Amazon is buyers reviewers vice product reviews. It is more important to me to know if the buyer will respond in a timely manner and takes any possible concerns to their part seriously. If all else fails, you can involve Amazon CS. If you don't like any of the solution may I suggest start up your own online or brick and mortar retail business and show Amazon and Apple how it is done.

Whilst on the surface it looks like Apple can’t handle criticism, product reviews are largely baseless and pointless drivel.

Everyone wants to shout about terrible products & services but rarely see people who have great experiences write about it.

It’s the same for everything; reviews are mostly pointless. Constructive 2, 3 and sometimes 4 star reviews are the most helpful.

Yes, review bombing by the Apple-hate crowd is a difficult issue. I suppose inauthentic reviews is a better term.

Review bombing? The reviews in this very screenshot are COMPLETELY relevant.

$130 pencil cant include a spare tip like the first (cheaper) one?
$130 pencil has very little impact resistance and drops destroy them

But yeah .. go on further about review bombing.....

Since the integrity (and agenda) of the reviewers, these days, regardless of the company or product, is questionable at best, I can see why a company might take this approach. There are multitudes of venues for product reviews online, so it's not as though Apple product reviews by customers are no longer available.
There is no “agenda”. These are honest reviews with people that want to vent their frustration or joy of a product. To quote Apple, I’m sure a “very small percentage” are fake, but the majority are genuine.

A shady move from Apple! Even though AirPods are fantastic, for example, they had a rating of under 4 of 5. I feel that a lot of products were bashed by reviews, but Apple should keep reviews public. Constructive criticism helps to improve future products overall.
But how many? 1% of total reviews? Apple marketing team can’t hire an army of arbiters to nitpick “constructive review” and highlight them apparently, so they just go simple and very Apple-like: nuke everything to the ground.

Feel free to post whatever you wish, but why reply to me if you don’t want to address my post?

What should be done about all fake one-star reviews?

If you believe it is fake and one star, ignore them. No one is forcing you to read them and as per your own account waste 10-15 mins. I personally filter reviews to 3 stars or more and verified purchasers. Some people will have a bad experience but I go with the majority reviews averaged. This is not hard to figure out and certainly does not take the time amount mentioned.

If I am spending $0-30 on an item I usually do not care too much for reviews, if it is more than $100 then I find multiple sources. Seriously it makes no sense why someone would spend 10-15 mins on reviews for a $5 item.

I actually read the reviews, and it takes me about 10-15 minutes to get a read on the product/vendor. There is no filter for that, so your reply makes zero sense.

Seems you are complaining for the sake of complaining. If you have a better solution to the problem lets see it and implement it to Amazon, Apple, etc. Why are you hear complaining about it if there are many likeminded people who are affected.

If you cannot see that I did address your post well that is your personal problem.

Apple’s solution to fake one-star reviews is to take down reviews. Other companies just delete all negative reviews.

Maybe have the buyer enter a serial number as proof of purchase?
For a charging cable?

Anyway, looks like Apple's entirely removed user reviews from their site (versus just censoring negative ones) which I guess is their prerogative. It's not like there aren't plenty of places on the internet to look up reviews of Apple products if one wants to. I myself often just hit up Amazon for user product reviews, though I'd be interested to hear of other places if people have suggestions.
