Earlier this month, China reportedly started blocking some features of the WhatsApp messaging service

I tested WhatsAPP inside China yesterday (7/31) with images - and it worked. At least where I was and on that day. But a total block is IMHO just a question of time.

Those things are only important to Tim until they affect the bottom line. He's had no problems dealing with dictatorships, countries that trample civil rights and rap stars who have abused women.

Tim will deal with anyone for a profit. Like a good politician he will say anything to make you feel good. He sells and makes his devices in countries with the worst civil rights policies, and in those countries he does not have the balls to even question said policies.... pathetic really.

Your VPN won’t work with a Chinese carrier/ISP.

Enjoy communism.

Only if the IP is blocked. People can get around this. You can still get VPN to work in China. Good it's a cat and mouse game.

Aka - it's not hard to change an ip of a VPN server ;) or find an ip of a server that's been brought up. Takes a lot more time to ban an IP

Apple's showing so much "courage".

Now get back to removing headphone ports on devices.

Don't you get it? They removed the headphone port so that users can't listen to illegal content on their phones. The screen will be next :p

Hate to tell ya but the US or any other technology advanced country with Nuclear capabilities would destroy the world with just a single launch of a ICMP missile. It wouldn't be the single launch of a ICMP missile but the retaliation from other countries that would destroy the world. No country is stupid enough to launch a ICMP at any country knowing that would be the end of civilization as we know it. Being tuff is so passe' now.

I'm quite curious about these ICMP missiles you speak of, can they be used to disable internet routers for example? ;)

US: 11 Aircraft carriers, 900 military bases in 135 foreign countries

China: 2 Aircraft carriers, 0 military bases in 0 foreign countries

I've seen a lot of silly and statements on MR through the years. Yours here is tops. First, I wrote standing army, not aircraft carriers. No war has been won from the air. But did you check China's location? They can cause quite a blood bath and chaos without any carriers. Why pretend China isnt dangerous and formidable? Your cherry picked selection makes it seem like China is impotent.

Nope, I'm arguing there should be the ability to control that spread of fake news.

That's a rather dangerous precedent.

The best cure against fake news is an informed, educated, critical-thinking public.

Widespread use of VPNs dilutes that.

It dilutes government control, yes.

Go to the plains of Africa and read the Constitution to a lion, and see what it does next. It's a different set of circumstances.

I'm not sure what a lion does in reaction to the constitution (the US one?), but I assume your analogy's point wasn't to suggest that the Chinese, compared to the Americans, are animals?

You don't know what a lion would do to a human standing in front of it? Perhaps you should focus on your own critical thinking.

It looks pretty easy, as Tim has a lot of time to praise transgender bathrooms and other social issues he cares about at home while being a social hypocrite overseas.
Its almost as if running one of the worlds biggest companies is complex.

I just find it really weird of some people to hate something that should be simple: unisex bathrooms, gay rights. It's easier to not create more rules. Don't you think? What is it about trans people that scare you?

So without the protection of the government, a Chinese person would get eaten by fake news?

No need for Apple to blather on about privacy rights anymore then. They act as if they have no weight to throw around against the Communist Party of China. China needs those assembly jobs desperately and it would be a huge loss if Apple moved production elsewhere.

So wait are we talking about China or Russia? Confused about this article. I read the China thing days ago on Slashdot, but the blending of this article is confusing.

\\

Do you find it acceptable for such a vocal CEO that preaches freedom of values and freedom to access information and freedom to privacy in their home country, but to recognize the COMPLETE OPPOSITE in another country in which they don’t reside but still rely on for their financial success? And how do you leap from my post to an assumption that I “hate” gay rights? Finally, are you suggesting that the Chinese government is correct in that its citizens should not have access to “foreign” opinions or unlimited access to the Internet?

The US is hardly a paragon of virtue.
You have the highest prison population (per 100,000) of any country in the world.
Many (most ?) of your prisons are "for profit"
Many prison have forced work regimes, i.e. you are "free" not to work in solitary confinement
How is this any different from Slave labour ?
..and yet that somehow gives China a pass on forced abortions for female babies. You're disgusting.

Laws are laws, it's strange that the article seems to think Apple should be helping users to access information that China has deemed illegal. That's a slippery slope. Should Apple create Childporn.app next?
A VPN and a childporn.app are not the same.. I reckon most people support VPN's but not childporn.app's

Were you using a Local SIM card or roaming?

Local SIM, UNICOM. Be aware that in China different areas might have different blocks. Roaming SIM are usually unblocked.
[doublepost=1501657843][/doublepost]
Both are illegal in China. How are they not the same?

Your analogy is simply wrong. Firstly, VPN are not illegal in China. There are plenty of legit uses for VPN. Note also that 'some' VPN got removed. I presume that are those that offer gateways. There are apps that have no gateways, like OpenVPN, which is just a protocol. Keep also in mind that iOS has a VPN function integrated in the OS. Android too. So is very phone user a criminal in your sense?

I am not aware of any childporn app, and I doubt that there ever was one. That is totally different and I can't see the relation. Not everything is the same because it has one match somewhere.

Unlicensed, personal VPNs (which these apps were for) are illegal. Thats why they removed them.

Is every American a murder for owning a gun? Every man a rapist for having a penis? Your reasoning is flawed.
