Why would they do this? This means you can't walk into an Apple store and get the full numeric keyboard with your iMac, right? If I understand it, you'll have to BTO your computer to get the full keyboard...hence making it more difficult to return, since you can't return web BTO orders to the Apple stores.

Ehhhh, not necessarily. There's no reason why they'd have to treat a trivial change like the keyboard (something they'd undoubtedly keep in stock at the store anyway) the same as they would choosing between HDD and SDD. We'll have to wait and see how they handle it.

Seriously, negatives!? How is a new product introduction, which I for one welcome, a negative? How I wish for the old days before the pc fanboys made the switch.

newton again?

Maybe......

Small, light ergonomic keyboard + upgraded iPhone = Newton like experience.

I woudl love to be able to do word processing on my iPhone with a small but "full" keyboard. Should not be to hard to design.

I still have my 2100 !!!

wow.. I really hate when Apple pulls this kind of stuff. Just got my macbook pro upgraded and now it offers 2.9 which I really wanted in the 15".. BLAH.. owell:)

Now all they need to do is to make the full-sized keyboard available in a Bluetooth flavor

I hope you're right.

A .1 ghz bump in the 15" will be nice for new buyers, but I'm glad I didn't wait. That's not going to make a whole lot of difference.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11a Safari/525.20)

Awesome. Don't like keyboard.

The addition of the 256GB SSD is probabaly the most exciting thing in this recent refresh. The new Macs are cool, but they were expected. I'm also obviously not looking to buy a new iMac but the 15" MBP with the 256 SSD is what I'll be adding to my collection next.:)

I am not impressed with them bumping the processor speed so soon after they released the MBP. I like many other people have spend $3k + on a MacBook Pro and are now out of date from the new 2.66 MBPs

I know some of you will say not a big difference between 2.53 and 2.66, it is more of a principle when you spend $3400 on a computer in this economy (when people are loosing jobs by the second)

I certainly wasn't expecting that! I ordered a 2.8Ghz on Thursday and it hasn't even shipped before it's "obsolete" :(

guess you weren't one of the people complaining that the mac mini hadnt been updated for a year then

I am irritated that less then 6 months and apple does a speed bump on a machine that costs people $3400. Now lets look around and see how many people have $3400 to burn. Last i checked the economy is in recession, so why is apple playing a wise guy.

All of you that say why don't we keep the technology and not advance, that is just plain stupid, yeah we want technology to advance, but we all know at some aspects apple is behind in technology compare to other companies that implement the newest stuff like video cards and processors and such. We are all ok with that and we love apple thats why we go and spend $3400 on a laptop. But why do a small change, small change less then 6 months into your product when you know people have a hard time affording it anyway and you will piss off people that already bought it and are your loyal customers.

If they upgraded it to 8GM ram, 9800M GTX, 18x super drive, mate screen, 2.66 processor then yeah i can understand that and yeah it be worth the upgrade to the new MBP for those that need to have the latest and such

Hah. Is there some large fraction of the Apple user base that had a problem with the numerical keyboard? How are you supposed to use Numbers or any other application that requires numerical input with THAT?

The bluetooth mini-keyboard was OK since it was marketed as an additional input device, but they've gone off the deep end with this one.

I can't believe it's the default choice. That means every person who buys the iMac at retail (from places like Amazon, Best Buy or Mac Mall) are going to have to deal with not having a numerical keypad. What's next a keyboard without arrow keys?

You've got to be more accepting of the fact that your preferences may not be everyone else's preferences.

In an earlier professional life i used spreadsheets and the numpad a lot; today i do a lot of photo and video editing, writing, plus the usual email and web work. Having a "short" keypad gives me extra desk space for paperwork. Because i frequently am working at a notebook attached to a monitor, i prefer an external keyboard that can be positioned where i want it. You know, all that "ergonomic" stuff. I've been using the short BT kbd but i'll definitely buy one of these wired ones to avoid the infrequent battery hassle. So to each his/her own. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people liked the short one. How many home iMac users do you think do aggressive spreadsheet work? IMHO, the more options apple offers us, the better.

I just wish they'd bring out a short keypad with a touchpad. For my personal needs, that'd be ideal.

Does that mean yours will no longer do what you need it to do?

Nobody has confirmed that you can't walk out of the store with an iMac with full-sized keyboard.

True, but that's a good possibility. If it turns out that you'd have to go BTO just to get the number pad, that would be a major bummer.

Seriously, negatives!? How is a new product introduction, which I for one welcome, a negative? How I wish for the old days before the pc fanboys made the switch.

By making the smaller keyboard the default with the iMac. We'll see if you have a choice when you buy in a store.

bluetooth full sized keyboard would be nice...

... and would a multi-touch bluetooth mouse.

The Mighty mouse has way too many issues.

Why are people getting arsey about the new keyboard? If you don't like it, don't buy it, I personally love it, I never use the numeric pad on my keyboard, and since switching to permanently using a laptop, haven't missed it...

Wow... I'm constantly amazed at how some small fraction of people will be able to mark any news as negative. But a slight speed bump and a new keyboard option gets more negatives than positives?

Lighten up, people. If you really want to freak out, just imagine: In a couple years, your MBP will be as far behind as mine.

Edit: And the SSD option, to boot....

I voted negative because of the keyboard. I think it should not be default.

I never use the numpad and quite like the look of the new wired keyboard. Just wish Apple would sort out them USB ports and make them actually useable for anything other than mice (360 controller doesn't even work with them).

I tried doing taxes on my macbook once and it was horrific. I use the keypad non stop at work and home. The problem is its default with the imac not the other way around.

For you my friend...>>>Asus has your game :D

all you need to do in this economy is sell a kidney and buy a Lambo laptop monster...make sure you get insurance on your testicles though :D

http://blog.laptopmag.com/asus-lamborghini-vx5-hands-on-and-video

^^^ this site implies dual drive capability, so in theory you could have 2x1TB SSD's for 2TB total, w00t!

http://www.asus.com/news_show.aspx?id=14515

The VX5 is equipped with currently the world’s largest density Solid State Drive standing at 1TB.

Powered by an Intel® Core™2 Quad processor and 4GB memory, it features a TwinTurbo mode that users can utilize to accelerate CPU and GPU performance via a speed key. A 16-inch full high definition display provides more-than-ample viewing space for documents, pictures or movies. Images are displayed in visual vibrancy and clarity, thanks to a dedicated NVIDIA® GeForce™ GT 130M graphics card with GDDR3 1GB VRAM. A newly-adopted illuminated ‘chiclet’ keyboard automatically lights up in low light conditions, while a Blu-ray disc combo optical drive completes this comprehensive package of panache and power.

While we're bit-chin and moaning, when is Apple going to include a BR drive option already???

You would think with reports of constrained NAND flash, due to orders for the rumored upcoming iPhone revisions, Apple should have the clout to get the best prices from suppliers like Samsung on SSD's, yes? Then why is Apple so far behind in offering higher capacity SSD's? By the next revision of the MBP, I want to see <$1GB SSD's either as standard or options...256GB just doesn't cut it now.
