Epic fail if that keyboard is what comes in the box. I guess some people will like it (why???), but I sure as heckfire don't. I get condensing it on a notebook, but what's the effin' deal with it on a desktop? How small are you people buying desks nowadays?

By default it would, but you can order the wired keyboard with the numpad for no extra charge. However, it would be counted as a BTO machine I believe.

Apple seems to have forgotten that they sell COMPUTERS and computers process numbers. Many people use the keypad for repetitive data entry.

To remove the numeric keypad for the sake of chic or to increase profits is the continuation of a troubling trend.

I really like my MacBook Pro, but I do find the lack of a numeric keypad to be inconvenient at times. On the laptop I can see some justification for reducing the number of keys, however I fail to see it for a desktop computer.

Why carn't someone tell Apple that they need a wireless keyboard WITH a number pad... in the new style. There is no point of a slim line version of this keyboard that's wired. IMHO.

Is anyone else thinking this ?

Umm, let me break it down for you. Wireless means that its not gonna be used on a table. If its not used on a table, but maybe on your lab or couch the length is just about the size of to fit on your knees.

Great news in the small MBP mid-range bump as i was planning on buying one this morning and thought 'well you never know with Apple!'

On the downside it put me off the 17" one as for the extra screen real estate and the longer battery it aint worth £250 to me. The 8gb max RAM would be of interest but still it would cost at least £70 to get that and therefore £320 doesn't make it worth while for me. User dependant obviously!

I am not impressed with them bumping the processor speed so soon after they released the MBP. I like many other people have spend $3k + on a MacBook Pro and are now out of date from the new 2.66 MBPs

I know some of you will say not a big difference between 2.53 and 2.66, it is more of a principle when you spend $3400 on a computer in this economy (when people are loosing jobs by the second)

It's going on FIVE MONTHS. Is it really too soon to update the MBP? It will be five months next week since the MBP was updated along with the MB and MBA.

And many people don't. Those that do ought to buy their own numeric keypad. It's not like Apple uses a proprietary interface.

Personally, I always used my wireless keyboards on a table.

It all depends where your PC is hooked up - if its hooked up to a TV, then you'll probably going to have your keyboard on your lap. If its at a desk , then probably on the desktop.

I tried doing taxes on my macbook once and it was horrific. I use the keypad non stop at work and home. The problem is its default with the imac not the other way around.

I agree, each keyboard sold should come with a free iMac. :D

Okay, tiny Bluetooth keyboard: annoying, but understandable. Tiny wired keyboard: baffling, but to each his own. Tiny wired keyboard standard with big big computers: lunacy.

I don't get it. I really don't understand what Apple is playing at. If they want three keyboard models, I'll throw my vote in for a wireless 'board with number pad. Whenever I get $80 to my name, I always (sometimes) stand up with cash in hand, all set to pick up a wireless keyboard for my iMac, when I remember that I'd be better off using my freaking laptop keyboard.

This stinks. So yes, negative. I'm not going to get my panties in a twist over Apple making their computers faster. Shame on them.

Absolutely! It makes sense to have wireless keyboards in small and large, since they are applied to a much broader variety of purposes than their wired counterparts.

I also wat'd at the new keyboard, but the reasoning is pretty clear...

ALL of Apple's laptops use that format of keyboard. And since the new smaller keyboard is the default for iMacs and whatnot, they'll have to make a lot less keyboards with numpads. Basically, this is a move to keep costs down, and it makes sense.

To be honest I'm surprised they haven't changed their wired keyboards to have black keys yet.

I'm also of the camp who wants a wireless keyboard with a number pad. Well, at least I was. I had the wired keyboard for a long time and loved it but wanted a wireless one, so I ended up getting the Logitech Dinovo Mac Edition keyboard and have never looked back. I love typing on this guy.

I agree. This is like back when the B&W G3 tower came out and came with that stupid compact keyboard and puck mouse like what the iMacs had at the time. It almost made sense for the iMacs of the time (though there's NO excuse for the puck mouse) but terrible idea for a professional desktop.

But even that keyboard had a numpad.

At least there *is* the option of getting the full size one when you order. At long as that option remains. I just don't understand why anyone would specifically want the compact wired one.

I think that the number of people who actually use the number pad regularly and want it are in the minority. It's not like you lose functionality, you can still enter numbers. Therefore Apple is catering to the majority of its users. The feature is still available at no cost if wanted afterall.

As for the idea behind a wireless keyboard with numbers. Although that's a great idea, it only caters to very few users. Not many people want the number pad to begin with, and even less would want one in a wireless format. As someone mentioned, wireless likely means you are using it on your lap and the smaller the keyboard, the better.

So many of you want Apple to make products tailored to your specific needs and forget about what people as a majority want.

Heck, I'd like an iPhone with a full Qwerty keypad, why can't they make that an option? NEGATIVE.

I certainly wasn't expecting that! I ordered a 2.8Ghz on Thursday and it hasn't even shipped before it's "obsolete" :(

I take it all back - I've just had an e-mail from Apple saying they're now going to ship me the 2.93Ghz model instead at no extra cost :D - This has been done automatically so I guess they'll do the same for all outstanding orders - see quote below
Apple is pleased to announce a new 15-inch MacBook Pro, now featuring a faster Intel Core 2 duo processor.

Accordingly, we are pleased to revise your recent order by substituting the original product you ordered with the new MacBook Pro at no extra cost to you.

Learn more about the updates to the MacBook Pro line here: http://www.apple.com/uk/macbookpro

You can view the configuration and status of your order by visiting our Order Status website at http://store.apple.com/uk/managemyorder

Thank you for choosing Apple.

Kind regards,
The Apple Store

The only minor downside is that I have to wait an additional week, but I guess you can't have everything!

Ehhhh, not necessarily. There's no reason why they'd have to treat a trivial change like the keyboard (something they'd undoubtedly keep in stock at the store anyway) the same as they would choosing between HDD and SDD. We'll have to wait and see how they handle it.

If they keep it in stock, then it won't be problem. I worked at the Apple store and I can confirm that they WILL NOT take back a BTO config that isn't a regularly stocked item in the store. You're only option is to return via shipment to the Apple store online.

Crossing my fingers that they do in fact stock a version with the larger keyboard.

Honestly, why can't Apple be arsed with making a wireless version with a number pad?

Oh, and a more robust, better engineered Mighty Mouse would have been nice too.

yes what we all want, a keyboard WITHOUT the numeric pad. BRILLIANT, you just proved how idiotic you are again apple, good job.

guy, can you explain to me why you're so angry? seriously. go on apple.com. you can buy a wired keyboard with our without the number pad.

Okay, for all you people who bought your computers prior today, and are now complaining about the updates, think for a second. You were perfectly happy with your computers when you purchased them. What has changed today?

Nothing, yes you do not have the newest and greatest machines, but so what?

You still have a great product, yes it's not the newest thing, but if it didn't suit your needs when you purchased it, why did you get it?

I am trying to explain it to you. I am using both kinds of keyboard. The full-sized one on an iMac and the reduced layout on a Macbook.

I sometimes do some programming, usually write and do a lot of slide presentation stuff.

I like to have full sized cursor keys to begin with. The dedicated DEL-Key on the full sized keyboard I use A LOT. I like to have a lot of dedicated function keys around to use for the fancy thinks like sound-control, Expose, you name it, and still have the ability to put some key-mappings of my own e.g. for using Forklift in the Norton Commander style.

So I very much prefer to do actual WORK on the full-size keyboard over the Macbook because it feels so limited. And mind you I have said nothing about the number pad so far....

Save the Tiger!

Ever since the AL keyboard came into existence, I was hoping Apple would produce a WIRED no-numeric keypad version to eliminate the right-hand stretch for the mouse.

Today I was ready to purchase two of these new keyboards for my G4 "lampshade" and G3 Special both limited to Tiger 10.4.11.

Alas ...... the specs limit its use to Leopard 10.5.6 or better!

What a letdown ....... (shoulders droop as I slink back to my cave)

DIXIE :(

Yup, all of apple buyers are number crunching accountants and such and LIVE OR DIE by the keypad:rolleyes:

Why no black keys?

I still don't understand the white keys on the new keyboards. No current mac line has any white in it. Why don't they switch to black keys? I'd love a BT keyboard with number pad and black keys.
