my bad. i guess i looked at the canadian store! ;D

they ****ed up majorly.
everyone wanting a firewire will ditch the unibody 13"...

This was all planned from the beginning like with the 17" Pro, the way things were for the last few months made people appreciate more the Unibodies. Apple probably sold more Alu Macbooks than they would have if the White one had the specs it has right now.
Apple can still update the other 2 macbooks in a couple of months and the pros a couple of months later, no need to touch the White and the 17" Pro then. Genius!

Aluminium advantages:
Thinner, lighter, faster memory, nicer screen, bigger hard drive, glass trackpad, longer battery life (by 30 mins), Mini DisplayPort, more environmentally friendly.

White advantages:
Sexier (in my opinion), more durable, Firewire, glossy but not mirror glossy, $300.

Not sure I'd ever say the white plastic was sexier than the shiny aluminium.

I guess this means that they were not burning through stock on the Polycarbonate Macbooks. Those cases are more than likely still in full swing production.

Its the huge black border, ugh. I like the black, just wish the border was thinner like on the new 17" MBP, now that is one good looking computer.

I guess the unibody is sexier, but there's just something about a white Apple product, its been their signature colour for years.

There seems to be less reason to buy the bottom spec alu now. I've been thinking about buying the 2Ghz alu macbook for a while now. It would now feel like I'm paying the extra just for the way it looks.

I've always thought that the white macbook was cute, while the alu macbook was sexy.

If this is the line to stay I guess polycarbonate/cracks/yellowing/DDR2/old display is the new Combo-Drive and Backlit KB is the new "black"

There's just one problem with the plastic case. It keeps cracking. Two of mine have cracked three times in the same place. Here's a report.

Amen.

This is why I was looking forward to the Aluminum 13" Macbook, but the lack of FireWire makes it a useless device for me. My Protools rig requires FireWire. But I don't want to spend $2200 on a laptop, and I don't want to buy a laptop that cracks under regular use. If I had to buy a laptop today, it would be a hackintosh (if possible)

So let me get this straight. . .

You have to pay extra to get No FireWire!

So the business model for Apple laptops is.

$1000 . . . FireWire 400
$1500 . . . FireWire 000
$2500 . . . FireWire 800

I'm getting tired of linear thinking anyway! ;)

Agreed. I like the Aluminum look MUCH better than the white plastic. The increased durability of the Aluminum is just another plus.

Also, there are a number of folks here speculating that the FW 400 is continued here because Apple is "testing the waters" or "realizes their mistake"... Let it go, people. Seriously. If you know anything about the history of Apple products and their approach to technology, they are a company that is the first to remove dated technology from their products when they see a newer or better one on the horizon (remember the disk drive folks?).

Despite the number of peripherals which currently offer FW 400 options, FW 400 is a dying technology playing the back nine of it's useful life. With USB 3.0 around the corner (not to mention FW 3200...or is it 3600), new standards are about to issued and Apple, as it usually is, will be at the forefront of the products' introduction and implementation. The only reason the FW 400 is still offered on this machine is b/c Apple has essentially acknowledged that it is the machine of choice for those looking almost exclusively at the fiscal bottom line in their purchasing decisions. These folks are the most likely to have peripherals which do not use the FW 800 or any other forthcoming technologies.

You have to remember that firewire is not an issue for a lot of mac customers these days. Before intel, if you were a mac customer you'd expect these things because we did stuff with our macs. Now, people are buying macs because they are cool, look good, and can run windows if they are too ignorant to learn os x.

I think a mac without firewire is ridiculous, but the typical mac user is changing to college students who only use their computers for word processing, itunes, internet, and of course . . . porn.

I wouldn't say a nice screen. The white MB's screen looks better.
The new screen makes colors look white, and its viewing angle is terrible.
But from a programmer's point of view, the crap screen doesn't matter.

I wonder if they will use the same motherboard, integrated graphics, processor for the next update of the mac mini. It seems plausible, at least more so than the atom ion mac mini imo.

I am sure, as others also thing, that the Ion rumor is directly related to an update to the AppleTV, its not related to the mini.

Well this makes the already crappy $800 mini even more crappier!

$200 more gets a screen, a keyboard, a battery.....

The best annoucement

This is hilarious!!! THE best update after one year of disappointments, better than anything at MWSF 09 (HW/technologically-wise).
