The Mexican store has...

this is a great new revision to a time tested apple model.
A terrific continuation that will keep pricing moderate and affordable for students and more.

though i believe Apple needs to start having a more discounted entry level laptop, remember Dell and other companies have laptops avail for $599 and up. yes they are underpowered compared to this new model, but some people are just looking to cover the basics.

It looks like Intel has really hit a wall with notebook processors.

I bought my black MacBook two years ago this month and it has the same speed Core 2 Duo processor. I'm sure this one has a higher speed FSB and more cache, but still.

At the rate Intel was moving two years ago, I would have thought we would have quads and 3Ghz dual-cores across most of the product line by now.

makes my 2.0ghz core duo from 2006 not seem thaaaaaat outdated lol

Apple has done a worthy upgrade to the once forgotten $999 White MacBook.

i know id pick out this model over the unibody now.

just wish it was black instead of white

They have indeed hit a wall, me thinks. My guess is 3 GHz will become more common in laptops in 5 or 6 years when we can adapt some of the technology that is coming out today.

Not that I really care, I could live with a sub - 100 MHz machine if I had to. :p But I do hope they still have the white MacBook in 2 years when I'm due for an upgrade. (No big deal if they don't, I'll just buy a used one, but it would be nice to get something brand new for once. :))

I personally like the aluminum. It doesn't feel as cheap and delicate as the whitebook. You do not notice every spec of dirt as much. It's lighter and smaller plus I like the overall look more.

looks like a great opportunity for people who need FW on unibody macbooks to put their money where their mouth is.
The even better opportunity follows next week with a silent FW800 update for the unibody Macbook and the $50 matte upgrade option for both the MBP 15 and the new Macbook...

Apple is trying to tempt me back from the windows side.... $300 LESS and all I lose is DDR3 and an ugly black keyboard and alum shell? Count me in.

$300 more and you get.....

** DDR3 Memory
** 160GB HD
** Glass Multitouch Trackpad
** Glass LED Backlit Display
** Louder Stereo Speaker (Whitebook is Mono)
** 0.95" Thin Unibody
** 4.5lbs
** Black keys / casing that won't turn yellow like the whitebook

......To me thats worth the $300. Some intangibles there.

Lovely, an only minor-glossy MacBook with up to date specs. I wonder if it now has HDCP..

Also, the Dutch store hasn't been updated. Still shows the GMA X3100 version.

This is really sweet. A pretty much decent spec laptop with OSX, 5 lbs for less than $1000 new....thats awesome....plus it has firewire.

If you dont care about aluminum unibody or LED screen & really need firewire...this is great.

I think that by now Intel should have already broken the 3.0 GHz barrier. I mean, the last processors to reach those speeds were the Pentium 4's which almost reached 4 GHz.

Intel should really look into faster CPUs now that the FSB bottleneck is over in the new Nehalem architecture. I mean, its almost 2010 and we are still playing with 2.0 GHz CPUs? What the hell, we should have 2.8 GHz as a minimum now a days.

It's a good update, but really bad allocation of time on Apple's part. They should seriously be focusing on updating the current Macbook, iMac, and Mac Mini, not the old Macbook. I mean, imagine if the update was simply to change the old Macbook to a low end uni. 999, same specs as current white macbook, unibody. It would sell like crazy and actually be a good idea. This is a very backward step forward, if that makes sense .

If they are really committed to keeping this motherboard around as their MB solution to offer FireWire, they could always come up with a Unibody shell to fit it. They just need a CNC program to mill the block of aluminum slightly differently. Then when you go into the Apple store they can ask you "FireWire or Glass Trackpad?". Most users won't understand the DDR2/DDR3 speed differences, so this is something that users can make their choice on.

SJ is taking a break remember ;) Tim likes Wednesdays

Not to mention they have an earnings report today. This news could balance off the inevitable price drop.

IMHO, Apple should capitalize on the state of the economy and say during March or April lower the White MB to around $800. Then add FW to the Unibody MB and drop the price to $1100.

But once you add FireWire to the Unibody, what incentive is left to buy the Whitebook? If it is just price, there are always ways around that (get a refurb, save up for a while longer, etc).

That sorta of power locked into these new chips will surely be unlock at a full extent once Snow Leopard arrives. As far as the chipset (motherboard) is concerned. I am sure this is a custom made chipset for Apple by nVidia, since this 9400M carries mini-DVI and Firewire, where as the Al MacBooks carry mini-Display and no firewire.

I'm kind of surprised that while they were making whatever tweaks were needed to change the graphics card they didn't just move from miniDVI to miniDP, too. They can always release a miniDVI to miniDP cable to allow the Whitebook to connect to a single new monitor, but that's one more part they will have to manufacture or hope someone else does.

my bad. i guess i looked at the canadian store! ;D

they ****ed up majorly.
everyone wanting a firewire will ditch the unibody 13"...

Unless FireWire will be making a return on the Unibody.

I am really fighting the urge to flame you like I have not flamed for over a decade. MAYBE we get to 3ghz in 5 or 6 years???? Have you noticed at all the rate at which cpu rate has been increasing for the past 20 years? Laptops are only about 6-12 months behind desktops. In one year 3ghz will be common or a equivalent efficiency cpu for mobile. In 2-3 years there will be 4-12 core cpus for mobile. Inf 5-6 years?? I don't know, laptops run on water with optical circuitry??? And what's with the pink, are you a girl.

That's probably where the name CASSIE comes from. Holy cow...

If they're so good at catching up, then why didn't we have 3GHz notebooks in January 2007? That's one year after the release of the 2GHz MacBook Pro.

Water... Optical circuitry... Think different, man. Or, rather, think technologically.

In about 12 years we'll see the first processors made out of superconducting material. I'm talking the REAL stuff here. Logic boards will be printed with synthetic diamond (as opposed to copper or whatever they use now) because it will be IMPOSSIBLE to cool the entire board to have the whole thing use superconductors.

After that, it's all quantum computing.

This update has nothing to do with providing a well spec Macbook with firewire or opening the door for the unibody to get firewire, its a way to sell a good notebook to the masses that get really excited for sub 1,000$, which by the way is not related to firewire.

Strange they didn't update the mini-DVI port to a mini-Display Port so they could also sell me a LED Cinema Display.

I think this is all for the Mini. It would not make sense for the Mini to be superior to the MacBook white so in making the MB's for the Mini they fabricated these as well. With the continuation of FW (400) and the mini-dvi - will be inteesting to see if the mini is the same features as this or different...

well lets see, weve have 2 core 2ghz chips now for 3 years now....and we are still having 2 core 2 ghz chips today:rolleyes: only difference is that they have 64 vs 32 and even then, they went 64 late 2006

And what's with the pink, are you a girl.

why does that matter? yes, she is a girl and i like her color scheme as i enjoy reading her posts and by her making it pink, its easy to spot out
