At the October'08 event, they show a plastic MacBook and they it's their best-seller... I personally took it as meaning people preferred plastic to metal as is my case. Check out the video see how you interpret it. It's at 38:14.

yeah they say its good selling and it will be around awhile or something like that. i just wished they would have updated the whitebooks with the nvidia gpu when they released the new alum macbooks.i bought the whitebook around the time of the alum update and now im kinda mad that i have a whitebook with the x3100. anyway i thought of getn the macbook pro at the end of the year, but im still mad lol

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20)

I'm glad that they added the nvidia graphics to the lowest end model.

Illuminated Keyboard

The article (and this thread so far) forgets to mention that the aluminum models have illuminated keyboards.

And fwiw, implicit in the aluminum body is a lighter weight... like half a pound, I think. And a slightly thinner body overall.

Only the $1599 Macbook has a backlit keyboard.

The new White MacBook will perform a bit slower on the graphics side due to the DDR2 and 667 MHz speed vs the DDR3 and 1066 MHz found in the Al MacBook. The difference won't be noticeable until you start doing things like games or Photoshop.

However, as an entry level Mac, I'd day it's a very sweet deal. Same CPU and graphics chip as Al MacBook bring to this notebook some serious power.

I like what a poster said before me and I am going to restate it. Apple must be preparing it's product line for Snow Leopard. The old crap Intel GMA had barely an power to do graphics stuff; however, the new nVidia chip carries a punch of 16 cores with enough power to hit 54 Gigaflops. (check nVidias site for that) Bare in mind the white MacBook won't hit 54 Gigaflops as it uses slower memory speed and DDR2, but still, it will be much, much faster than the crap Intel GMA, I dare say x3 faster (where as Unibody is x5 faster).

That sorta of power locked into these new chips will surely be unlock at a full extent once Snow Leopard arrives. As far as the chipset (motherboard) is concerned. I am sure this is a custom made chipset for Apple by nVidia, since this 9400M carries mini-DVI and Firewire, where as the Al MacBooks carry mini-Display and no firewire.

I'd still go with the low-end alu macbook. Purely for the trackpad and beautiful display.
But it's very encouraging to see Apple update the old model.

according to this, from how I read it, the new white macbooks could work with 800MHz DDR2 as well, it wouldn't suck that bad with 6GB or 8GB in it..depending on how limiting the firmware is.

Hopefully the White MacBook finds its way out soon and the aluminum macbook drops down to the $999 or $1099 range. It's a great deal though and an excellent way for "switchers" to get a great machine for under a grand!

Wednesday update?

Wait, it isn't tuesday. Jobs is only gone for a few weeks and everything changes.

All in all, a good update for sure.

huh.
the price went up to 1149 now.
was 999 with same specs.. few hours ago :D

i would love the white MB. it's iconic. however i have right now no need for a MB. maybe soon they will show up at the refurb store for $799. then i could buy it as a "backup" for my MBP.

i'm sure there will be many at the refurb store because many will buy it because it's only $999 but then send it bback and get the more modern unibody MB.

This is awesome. I may end up getting it.
So, for the $1299 MacBook we're paying $300 more for a 40GB bigger hard drive and a new body.

And faster RAM and the LED display and displayport.

Honestly, it is a tough call though. I really want the unibody one but the price difference makes it a tough choice.

Nice little upgrade... When schools (I'm a computer tech for a large, urban school system) are looking to buy laptops for their students, I always buy these; it's nice to see that they still are pumping new tech into 'em!

The $300 upgrade cost to the unibody version will make several buyers opt for the White model.

Only $100 less than Refurb

Well, you can get the refurbed $1299 model for $1099. Now you are looking at a $100 difference.
