I have seen online and in the forums where folks have been replacing the TC drives on their own. Has anyone successfully done this with a 3TB drive on the TC? AS I understand it, there are some limitations as to what the hardware will recognize. If it does work then why not just replace your drive wit a new 3TB Green WD and be done with it?

I actually think it's reasonable value for money ... and I'm not trolling. What 3 TB storage option would you compare it with? How much am I really overspending?

WEll they are charging you an extra $200 to get a 3TB storage option when at retail a 3TB drive is $70 more than a 2TB drive at most.

And that's comparing it another Apple product.

3 TB drives are $150 at retail. You're being asked to pay $200 to go from a 2TB to 3TB hard drive.

It's a large markup.

Even for Apple standards. The $500 TC has always been a very high margin product. UP there with the $300 ram upgrades of the past and current BTO options.

But hey folks that buy the higher margin Apple stuff aka the more expensive models help subsidize the pricepoints of the base models.

Where are you buying your 3TB drives from? An internal drive (Hitachi Deskstar - just the drive on its own!) costs £129. The Time Capsule is much much more.

And where did you get £399 from? They haven't listed them in the UK yet.

Just goggle External 3TB drives. search on the Apple Store. They aren't difficult to bloody find.

This is not true, Apple ended that service well over a year ago.

They did indeed used to cover Airports under Applecare but those days are gone.

No it didn't end. They are still covered under the Mac's Applecare, read the T&C and don't go around telling lies:

Under APP, Apple covers the Covered Equipment and one compatible Apple branded display if purchased at the same time and registered with a covered Mac computer. An Apple-branded mouse and keyboard are also covered under APP if included with the Covered Equipment (or purchased
with a Mac mini). An AirPort Extreme Card, an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, Time Capsule, an Apple-branded DVI to ADC display adapter, Apple RAM modules and MacBook Air SuperDrive are also covered under APP if used with the compatible Covered Equipment and originally purchased by you up to two years before your Mac purchase or during the term of your APP.

True but for an extra £30 you get this.

gnasher, you didn't look very hard did you. Maybe not three times, but still more than twice the price of other options.

Yeah but then you dont have the Apple spirit of everything in the same style, and one device for all...

TC is Backup+ accespoint + Router + switch + host for Printer or Extra USB disk.

And there is no other device that does this...
Besides it looks like an Apple product and thats nice I think

But still if you dont mind 5 different devices.. this is to expensive.

No, that's not correct. The current page for the iMac AppleCare plan reads:

Apple hardware coverage
The AppleCare Protection Plan provides global repair coverage, both parts and labor, from Apple-authorized technicians around the world. Apple hardware coverage includes:

Your Mac computer
Included accessories such as the power adapter
Apple memory (RAM)
AirPort Express Base Station, AirPort Extreme Base Station, or Time Capsule2
Apple display purchased with your Mac

Also, if you have AppleCare on a computer, your Time Capsules automatically get covered.
Is this true?

Then why does Apple still advertise it? (In addition confirming this to me on the phone just 3 or 4 weeks ago)

"What’s covered — Mac
AirPort Express Base Station, AirPort Extreme Base Station, or Time Capsule2

The AirPort device or Time Capsule must be purchased up to two years before your Mac purchase or during the term of your AppleCare Protection Plan coverage"

Apple Care for iMac still shows:

Yes it is. You can add an Airport device to an Mac within 2 years, so it is possible to gain nearly 5 years of coverage with APP though that means one year without.

I did that with a 1st gen TC from 2008, added it to my Mac Pro 2009 and as the TC broke (fried PSU) I got a replacement unit and data retrieval for free and it is still covered with APP more than an year now.

You don't even know enough of what you're on about to make something that reads correctly. This has nothing to do with Microsoft or computers. Time Capsule is a hard drive with a ariel stuck to it. If your intelligent enough to think this is value for money you'll soon be on Steve Jobs Christmas card list.

You can by Seagate and many other 3TB external drives for £130.

I guess the saying is still true. A fool and his money are easily parted.

So, I guess that the HDD will walk around to all three laptops in the apartment, plug itself in, back up all 3 laptops, eject itself, unplug itself, walk back to the shelf and put itself away. Also, it will repeat this every hour the laptops are active and will continue to do this for at least 30 months (the duration of my current 3rd Gen 2 GB TC in the apartment).

So, I guess that I'm confused by your statement. It could be that your time has no value and thus you do not mind carrying out these steps every hour :D

FFS...

I will be getting my order in as soon as the page is up. I fully expect shortages of these due to demand like the iPhone and iPad when refreshed. Do not hesitate, jump onto the world's most advanced backup solution today!

So cuttIng thru the ****, it looks like it won't host my iTunes. That sucks, with iOS devices cutting the cord, that would mean more iTunes sales to iOS only households.

Since m hopes are dashed, how do. Wirelessl host my iTunes movies for ATV? Can I put my movies folder on a TC and use an alias in the iTunes folder structure? I don't care that I need iTunes running but my hard drive is near full with movies

The 'new' extreme price was also an anti climax. its merely had a 7 GBP price drop here in the UK. Woopity do! Stop the press! Lets all have a fanfare! Nice one Apple, just one problem is still looks like a frickin fridge that would only look suitable somewhere in the Kitchen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree that stepping up to the top-spec'd TC has always been pricey. Very pricey, in fact.

However, I think that it will be difficult to beat everything that the TC does (nevermind even really find it) in another single device. IMHO, it's really worth paying the premium (at least for the smaller capacity TC) over having a few other devices.

Why is it that you only can stream music with the airport express? I have a really old express...like 6 years and music is breaking up if i stream a youttubeclip at the same time or sometimes just out of the blue. I want to upgrade to fix this problem, but it seems that timecapsule or extrem both cant stream music.... is that true?

That's Apple. Never a company to supply all the features you could want for better or worse.
