I suspect the version should be 17.6.2 and they got it wrong.

This isn't the first time this happened.

macos 13.6.7 build 22G720 was released on May 13 after 5 RCs

But then RC 6 build 22G807 was released on June 17 and RC 7 build 22G810 on July 1 - yet they retained the version number 13.6.7

They should have been version 13.6.8

Eventually they released 3 more rcs, this time version 13.6.8 before finally releasing it on july 29.

But for the ios this time there are no rcs and so they didn't have the opportunity to correct the error.

The result is that there are many people stuck with the old build of 17.6.1. They might not be as savvy as those here on macrumors and not know about updating via computer and ipsw files and when the ota update doesn't show up on their iphone they just give up and wait till next update.

In ventura's case far fewer people are testing the ventura rcs than the new sequoia betas, and so the urgency of fixing it may not have been a priority.

Yet far more people will be affected this time with the mis-named ios update, and so i suspect this time a fix may get higher priority.

We may soon see a 17.6.2 update to replace this one, perhaps with build 21G102 or higher, just to fix the version number so that everyone can see the update.

if this is important, they screwed it up - no OTA and no one will know if they don't do the end-around with Finder+IPSW.

15 Pro Max...

and even if they know about the finder+ipsw way to update, if they are used to quick ota updates they might not have the patience to update that way

the ipsws are much bigger than the otas and so takes much more time and patience to uddate that way.

I am all for bug fixes and security updates, but, but, re-releasing some version a week later? Please call it .2 and not use the same version again
They are not re-releasing. Macrumors is simply 1 or 2 weeks late with this „news” ^^

It seems to me that this is a pretty basic thing to get wrong. I strongly suspect that something else is in play and Apple does not want anyone to know about.

I tried it with Finder on my mini & iPhone 13 PM and it showed up. Told it to go ahead and update but then saw it was an 8.x GB download so I pulled the plug. That amount of data would take me the rest of day to d/l and choke off everything else trying to use the internet. It appears to still be downloading though so I had to go into Activity Monitor to kill off the d/l.

Ok guys, I checked and today was only new tvOS and watchOS Public Release. Nothing for iPhones etc.

TvOSVersion: 17.6.1
Build: 21M80
Size: 1.9 GB
Release note is not available.

WatchOS new Version: 10.6.1

I connected my iPhone to my MacBook Air and managed to update it that way. It was a very cumbersome and lengthy process compared to the usual method of updating iOS.

No OTA for me either but I just now saw the update for apple watch . When was it released ? I didn't see it when the first 17.6.1 was out

Nervermind , I found the answer ;-)))

Yes but these are fake news bro ;D theres no new software available. Btw i really doubt they release same version again. Unless its a security update. But we dont see any.
nonsense ... read the posts from folks here, no OTA update but several folks updating via iTunes/Finder and getting the new build number

Edit: look at screenshot. Says my iPhone is running 17.6.1 and that a new version 17.6.1 is available ...

So people who installed the original 6.1 are screwed now? Mine has been buggy as hell. Phone is over heating, unlock animations keep glitching and battery is dying before I go to bed. Never happened before this update, on an iPhone 14 Pro.
Screwed? A bit extreme, don't you think?
