What I want to know now is - what do I do with this gaping hole in the front of my 12" PB? It affects my typing, and I'm worried that things might get stuck in there!

If it's really gonna take 4-6 weeks to get me a new battery, I think Apple should send out some sort of stopper to go in the hole... Know what I mean?

Just use your current battery for now.

There are millions of these Sony batteries out there, in all sorts of computers. Only a handful have blown up. Just don't blame me if it does. :) ha-ha. Just don't blame me, if it did. :(

Computer and battery both valid and it all went through perfectly. Received the confirmation email as well so 4-6 weeks time should see a new battery. These things happen I suppose and it is good to see Apple responding to a theoretically small potential problem.

Not working here either, iBook number ok but battery is rejected even though it is in range. May be my last post as I could theoretically burst into flames.
Is this just a UK thing?

I'll have to check my serial number out later, hope it's a duff one as it'd be nice to get a replacement with a full charge

I have used the UK site for my ibook, but the power book just validates the computer not the battery, even tho the battery falls smack in the middle of the range!

Any other UK users still having problems with the site?

Is it only PowerBook users who are havng problems in the UK?

It's now accepting the serial number for the battery in my G4PB12" that it was refusing last night.

Shame it didn't take the serial number for the original battery that stopped holding its charge...

Yikes. And I'm the one who persuaded my cousin to buy an iBook instead of a Toshiba. I hope her dormroom doesn't burn down.

I was having problems, then I discovered my battery falls under the 2005 recall!
:)

Now if only they'd extend the white spot screen replacement to 1.5GHz 15" PBs...

No, I'm in the UK, and I'm having the same problem with my iBook...

Battery serial correct but being rejected

Powerbook G4's and Ibooks. Just announced on CNBC.

Something odd here...

If the range for a A1061 model is 6C519 - 6C552 how come when I enter my iBook's battery serial; '6C534' I get the response that my iBook serial does qualify but my battery does not? It seems to me that 534 does come between 519-552!

Anyone else getting strange results like this?

Could I have found the answer at MacinTouch? They post a different set of serial numbers:

A1061 = 6C510 through 6C626 - Someone at MacRumours needs to check the serials being posted on this site! If anyone knows the correct range let me know please, I can't get through to Apple and my wife has the iBook wrapped in tin foil (just kidding).

CBS News made a point of announcing this recall on their Evening News show tonight. :) Blammed Sony for making bad batteries Dell also had to recall earlier this month. :D

BBC also participated in announcing the recall as well. More Images from BBC Coming. Show mobile Macs on Fire. "This comes hot on the heels of Dell's announcement last week," she says deadpan seriously. :D Sony says this recall may cost them up to $250 Million.

Showing Dell melted battery and laptop images as well and saying laptop makers may suffer negative image as well. Dell's stock price has dropped another 10% since thier recall began. She tags with regarding Apple's situation: "an announcement like this is taking a bite out of its reputation."

Enjoy the Desktops.

You should keep in mind that BBCNEWS is the chav of all news channels. They are out to do some damage...

BBC seem to bad mouth Apple at any opportunity. They can't even be bothered to make sure photos are the right way round...

Maybe they took it with an iSight. ;)

Mixed feelings about this one. I have an affected iBook battery. Coconut Battery is reporting the following:

12 months old
108 Load cycles
Maximum battery charge 4400mAh i.e. 100%

So in the space of a year with moderate use, my dangerous battery has lost none of its capacity, and this is borne out by usage (5hrs approx on full charge). Is this normal? It would be a pity to get a new battery that does start to lose its charge, since mine appears immortal.

Some people are saying that it accepted the computer but not the battery -

Remember - when you enter the computer serial, that covers the battery that came with the laptop. If you enter your computer serial AND teh battery that came with it, it will accept the computer (and assume you need a batteryfor that computer) and reject the battery. Only if it is a separate spare will the system accept a single battery serial.

I'm in a similar situation. I decided to just use my battery however I liked when I got my iBook five months ago, and after the first calibration have been cheerfully unplugging it mid cycle, charging it halfway, running off battery, charging it up again, running off battery, etc., etc., and doing this every single day. I decided it wasn't worth worrying about and I was going to use this laptop how it suited me, dammit!

So, after 5 months, I checked it, and it's also at 100% (185 cycles though  ). I also have an immortal battery! I think I'll still change it though — the new ones could be as good. I have a feeling a MacBook may have tempted me by this time next year, and I doubt it will be as sellable with a potentially exploding battery!

Still, good to know that I can treat my battery like my bitch and it still keeps its capacity. :p

Sheesh, the BBC suck up to Apple all the time. Get it right.

Sky News is the 'chav' of news channels, all bling and hype, no honest substance or impartiality.

So my question is...
How long will this battery exchange program go on for? Indefinitely i'm assuming? I've got two that are exchangeable, christmas came early, but only need one for the moment and don't want to store the other for too long of a time. Does anyone think apple would have an issue if I exchanged one now and the other sometime down the road?

With my 12" 1.5GHz using the command line:
ioreg -l | grep -i IOBatteryInfo

I get:
"IOBatteryInfo" = ({"Capacity"=4231,"Amperage"=0,"Cycle Count"=121,"Current"=4097,"Voltage"=12451,"Flags"=838860805,"AbsoluteMaxCapacity"=4400})

The amperage and current values change if I unplug the power cord, but not the Capacity of cycle count - so I assume it's fairly accurate.

When I first bought it I recall getting 44xx for capacity. So it's an "immortal" as well... at over 18 months old with daily use, not bad! Though I'd say 90% of the time it's plugged in. I did fill out the on-line request form and intend to swap it out when it comes (living in Germany at the moment so who knows when). I hope my new battery does as well as this one has... far better battery life over time than I expected. But I don't want to worry about it exploding.

I also fly often, so I hope airlines don't start banning laptops over this! :(
