Man, Face ID on this iPad is going to SUCK.

My favorite position in the iPad Kama Sutra is this:

Leaning over the iPad just to get a Face ID lock is going to be ridiculous.

why not just wait and see first before hating?

An event later this month is looking likely at this point. Just wonder if there are any Mac filings to indicate a new iMac or Mac mini will be introduced at the event.
For sure they will introduce new Mac products, the October Event will be too short if they show us only the new iPads.

You mean you can unlock your phone while the phone is in a landscape orientation?

Nope, but it’ll work the same way, just in landscape. So no change to the user.

I wasn't planning on upgrading but my wife is fed up with her iPad Mini 2 so what's a guy to do?

Get the $329 iPad for her.

I can sense the new iPad will have a monster price increase

I don’t think it’s going to be above $699 for the 64 GB.

Palm/Finger rejection has been terrible on my X and and Xs. So I cam very curious as to how you're supposed to hold and use an even larger device with no "safe space" to grab and hold it. Maybe balance it in one hand like a waiter holding a server platter?
The one nuisance about the bezel-less iPhone! I’m starting/learning to hold the phone just as you mention. Would not like to have to do that with a new iPad…

I don't see why this would be an issue. The iPad would be right in front of you in this situation. My iPhone works like this.

Lightning port will not be replaced by USB-C .

Wait for the pricing . I sense a significant rise
I just want a new one so it drives the price down of the current model. There will probably be a price hike on these new iPads... I will just take the old one at a reasonable price.

saaaaame here. no way i need anything iphone X related in the largest ipp model for daily use. especially a hike to cover the battery eating display upgrade.

Fake, there is not notch. No notch no buy.
You have trouble reading don’t you? Right under the picture it’s captioned states it’s a mockup photo. Also as someone else pointed out, you don’t need a notch when the whole screen is surrounded by a bezel like the iPad.

If you want to see it though, there was leaks today showing the possible iPad new design and being 6mm thick. Saw the pics this morning from the Apple News app, not sure what site they came from, possibly 9to5mac.

What do you mean? It will unlock like it does today, as long as your hand isn't covering it. It just won't work upside down.

Wait, you already have an iPad Pro with FaceID and you've unlocked it in landscape mode?

Unlocking my iPad Air 2 with TouchID is not a problem in landscape mode but the rumors are that you have to hold the iPad Pro with FaceID upright just to unlock it like the XS Max. It will be annoying when you're using it in landscape mode and have to always pick it up and hold it upright just to unlock it. That's what I meant.

Nope, the current implementation on the iPhone X that I have now is I have to face the phone in portrait orientation in order to unlock it. But the phone does not have landscape mode, so not a major issue.
On the other hand, the iPad supports landscape mode. If the iPad’s FaceID implements like the iPhone X, then it would not be unlocked while in landscape orientation.

That's the point isn't it. It'll be very very interesting where they place the FaceID sensors. "You're holding it wrong."

They already found an evidence on iOS 12.1 that Face ID will work on landscape mode. No one knows though if this is a new type of sensors or not.

Please Apple, please "one more thing": iPad Mini 5.

If it's about profit margin, just charge enough for it to make it as profitable per unit sold.

As much as I like my iPad mini 2, the iPad mini is almost definitely dead. That makes me sad—the iPhone XS Max is not an iPad mini replacement: the iPad mini is 4:3 and runs a superior form of iOS, being far more usable. While Apple doesn’t have a problem with cannibalizing their own products, they do seem uninterested with the more niche side-projects as of late, with the axing of AirPort routers and a careless apathy towards Mac mini and Mac Pro being unfortunate examples of this.

There's no reason for Face ID not to work in landscape. It's software based and it can't be hard to program it to detect a face 90 degrees to the left or right. It's made to be used in portrait and landscape unlike phones, think how Apple is advertising these as laptop replacements or as POS registers, all used in landscape.

Three model numbers could mean an ipad mini as well, right?

if 2 iPads were being released, wouldn't there would be 4 model numbers? 1 WiFi & 1 Cellular for each? I'd like to be wrong though. I tried giving in to the larger size and got the latest 9.7" iPad. It's definitely not for me. And the pencil isn't as useful as I hoped it would be. Writing & taking notes on it is still awkward.
