Nope, the current implementation on the iPhone X that I have now is I have to face the phone in portrait orientation in order to unlock it. But the phone does not have landscape mode, so not a major issue.
On the other hand, the iPad supports landscape mode. If the iPad’s FaceID implements like the iPhone X, then it would not be unlocked while in landscape orientation.

I am not sure if you are being serious or not. The new iPad Pro's will have Face ID work while in landscape. I am just saying the process of using Face ID should not be any different to the user. Look at it and it unlocks. Hope that clears things up for you.

Wait, you already have an iPad Pro with FaceID and you've unlocked it in landscape mode?

Unlocking my iPad Air 2 with TouchID is not a problem in landscape mode but the rumors are that you have to hold the iPad Pro with FaceID upright just to unlock it like the XS Max. It will be annoying when you're using it in landscape mode and have to always pick it up and hold it upright just to unlock it. That's what I meant.

No, but obviously if you cover up the sensors, it won't work. There is already proof in 12.1 that Face ID will work in landscape, so that's a done deal. Apple wouldn't release a device that is primarily used in landscape without Face ID working in that orientation.

Get the $329 iPad for her.
But then I can get the new one and she can get the 10.5" iPad Pro that already has a keyboard case, which she needs because she uses the iPad to manage her business. I have decided I don't really need the keyboard since I mainly do visually creative work on there.

Even better haha. I am with you, the $329 iPad is kind of a dog anyway. The new Pro's should be a really nice upgrade. Your plan makes much better sense if you have the funds.

The July sequence was - registered in the database and then silently released a weekly later. Unlikely these will be silently released. But possible.

Given that no announcement went out today, it begins to beg the question of when will it happen. Tim Cook is speaking the week of 10/22 so that is out. They typically do not send out invites same week as events. Guess they could do it for the "last week" of October - 10/30 or 10/31. More speculation.
it can't be at the end of the month because that's when the new iphones will be released.

I wasn't planning on upgrading but my wife is fed up with her iPad Mini 2 so what's a guy to do?
If she likes the portability of the Mini form factor, I can attest that the Mini 4 runs beautifully on iOS 12.

edit: never mind, see from your subsequent posts that you're on a different upgrade path -- LOL, I do the same thing: get myself a new Mac and justify it to my wife by passing my previous one on to her :)

Since Im not familiar with how these patents work, usually when they appear, how long does it take to actually be announced?

Yeah I was on the fence the other day, but some people convinced me to go for it. I don't usually upgrade my iPad very often, but I also make a lot more than I used to so I need to stop being so stingy and ease up. And usually my wife is the really frugal one, so if she's telling me to do it then I should just listen.

Interested to see how the iPad Pro will unlock with FaceID when in landscape mode.
iPad pro is designed to be used vertically. Perhaps will not be able to, unless using 2 face recognition like in iOS 12,so one can be for vertical second for horizontal ) share this idea with developers might be usefull

Makes sense. I upgrade yearly as it's my main computer and I like new devices. I usually sell and upgrade and it costs me about $200 per year. I think the new Pro's are going to be great, so definitely worth it.

Who said it's designed to used vertically? A lot of people use their iPad primarily in landscape. Also, there is already proof that Face ID will work in landscape in 12.1.

It cannot be at the end of the month because a product is being released? While I get the thought process, there is no hard reasoning why they could not do that.

Yeah I usually do that with my iPhone using Apple's iPhone Upgrade Program. I prefer to do most of my work on the Mac and I still need to get a new desktop. Currently I only have my work MBP because I gave my old 2012 one to my grandpa since he was having trouble with my old 2008 MBP. Ideally I think iPhone will be yearly, Apple Watch every 3 years, iPad every 3 years, Mac every 6 years. I was wanting to skip this cycle and get OLED next time, but I just don't think the prices will come down enough so that they can get OLED into 11" and 12.9" models. So by upgrading this year, there's a better chance of OLED or mLED in 2021. There aren't a lot of bigger OLEDs unless it's in TVs which I think use a different manufacturing process but are still fairly expensive. The only comparable thing I found was a ~30" OLED monitor from Dell that cost $5000.

I feel like that's good reasoning and you should see some nice upgrades in those time frames. I upgrade way too often haha.

I can’t wait. Really looking forward to upgrading my iPad Pro, keyboard, and Apple Pencil...

Lightning port will not be replaced by USB-C .
[doublepost=1539278691][/doublepost]

Wait for the pricing . I sense a significant rise
What makes so sure when most reports claimed otherwise.

USB C is coming, you're either in or out.

has there been any research into why some people have this problem? I would think that Apple would have something to say about this if it is a big problem like some say.

There was plenty of research back in the day when this was first discovered (with fluorescent lighting that was becoming all the rage in the office), just as soon as the problems got big enough that this couldn't be dismissed as "imagining things" anymore, but as usual everyone forgot all about it and started making the same mistakes again with LEDs and rediscovering the problems, and I don't think all the research has been duplicated yet (nor should it need to be, much of it).

The general idea is that you're looking at a strobe light, with a frequency range that fits the passband of your eyes, resulting in a signal, with components that happen to be in the general vicinity of the bands your brain uses for consciousness, organisation and long range process coordination, encountering some filtering along the way that complicates matters, due to wetware that's tuned for signal characteristics diametrically opposed to the ones exhibited by these odd components we get from the PWM-sourced light.

Some people have filters that cut the noise very effectively, and/or have ample signal to noise ratio margins in everything the noise feeds into (e.g. due to not using much bandwidth, at least not in the affected bands). Some people don't, and/or can't spare much SNR. Some people even have filters that throw an absolute fit themselves, downstream effects aside, when presented with this signal (those would be the ones that get migraines). And even in the ones whose filters cut the signal well enough, you're going to see downstream effects from crosstalk between normal traffic in your brain and inbound noise. But, for most people, it's not going to do anything terribly interesting that gets noticed.

I can use the iPhone X for several minutes at a time in the central part of my visual field against a stationary background without developing a headache or visual artefacts persisting significantly beyond my use of the device, which is seriously impressive.

I wouldn't be surprised if flickering lights turn out to be a driving factor in mass shootings or the popularity of pastel colours (I'm with Morticia on that one); lol.

But, yeah, Apple does have something to say: they apparently try to limit flicker where they can, but at some point the wants of the many must outweigh the needs of a few, commercially.

Interesting that the leak depicts the new 10:7 aspect ratio on the 11.0” model, that lends some credibility to this leak.

The resolution should be something like 2384 x 1668. About 9mm bezels if the Mac Otakara dimensions leak is correct. That leak would have the display on the 12.9” staying the same as the current iPad Pro, again with 9mm bezels all around.
