Sales does not equal customer satisfaction. The question is, success by who's standards? I'm playing a little devil's advocate here because companies always bend numbers to their marketing story. It could simply be there were tons of people and businesses that have held out and this is what they got. Maybe they aren't happy with the purchase but they simply couldn't wait any longer.
So point being, it could be pent up demand that couldn't wait any longer but aren't necessarily happy with their purchase. I wouldn't say that's success.
Now in reality, it's probably somewhere in the middle. I've had a few people I know say they love it all the way to the opposite side of they had to swallow it whether it was a corporate purchase or they are too far into the Apple ecosystem.
The truth is they were always going to get criticised whatever they released because of the glacial pace of Mac hardware updates and the general feeling that Apple wasn't giving the Mac much attention.
Throw into the mix the touchbar which certainly isn't for everybody, a significant price increase, social media and internet forums and you have got a recipe for an over the top reaction.
There are a lot of people who have unrealistic expectations though and are always going to be disappointed.
