Fellow Americans, please listen. Your willingness to be subjugated by big corporations will ruin the world. For what absurd reason do you think that Apple should be allowed to behave as a bully just because is rich and powerful? When I buy an iPhone with my own hard earned money, the iPhone is my property. I should be allowed to install on it whatever I want and not only what Apple concedes because it satisfies their greed. I really wish that all those here claiming that Apple is right are doing so because they own a vast amount of Apple shares. Otherwise it’s very difficult to understand your reasoning.
So we should be subjugated by big government instead? Or is that only when they make a decision you agree with? How far down that rabbit hole are you willing to go? I'm willing to bet that would ruin the world a lot worse than Apple not allowing you to install "whatever you want".

There's no defending Epic because that's not the point. Apple has tried to pull a PR stunt, but the crux of the matter is that they abused the control they were allowed to retain for security purposes in order to paint Epic as the evil company. The truth is that under the DMA, Apple shouldn't have the power to block apps for reasons other than security, so, should they pull something like this again, I reckon they'd be fined almost immediately by the EU.
This post is an example of being so engulfed in your own narrative that you are willing to ignore reality. Apple didn't publicize any of this until it was over. This obviously could have been resolved behind closed doors if Sweeney didn't "pull a PR stunt."

I think we don't want either to get too big? Limited government and controlled capitalism, or something.

Epics game store is an Epic failure and only taking 12% has not helped them at all. Didn't the court documents show how bad it was?
I dont think i said anything about whether it is working for them financially or not, i said the percentage price is fair in my opinion as a developer.
They are not doing that pricing structure to make big bank but to try and sway users away from Microsoft/Steam, i dont play games nor did i follow the US court case as it does nothing for me in the EU.
If Apple was not as greedy and charged small businesses 10% and larger ones 20% there would be 90% less people complaining and asking their local govs to do something about it.
I wont pretend that im affected as a developer regarding Apple/Google App Stores as i develop Web Apps and only have 3-5% cost for the payment provider depending on which one client chooses for their Web App.
Web is much simpler... anyone can publish whatever they want, with whatever software technology and with whatever design they chose, but these days people are so dependent on their phones that if you are a big business its hard being only web based..

That’s a good point. The new mint colour is really nice. Tim Cook has justified his salary with that colour alone.

I knew you'd come around
I'm thinking maybe even a pay raise?

Surely nickel and diming customers to death and doing massive continual stock buybacks ... along with some watch bands here and there.. is worth 100 Mil + / year?

Here's how it's seen by others

XDA Developers - Apple lets Epic Games back on the App Store after a DMA scolding

Yahoo Finance - Apple retreats in Epic feud, allows Fortnite return in EU

PCMag Australia - Apple Backs Down, Will Allow Epic Games to Create iOS App Store in EU

I can go on....
Because the headline "Apple and Epic come to an agreement that allows Epic to return the iPhone" isn't going to get many clicks.

Seems VERY unfair doesn't it? I want too play my HD DVDs on my PS5. Why is Sony acting like jerks?
So you acknowledge that's it's a technical issue then, unlike Apple's dictating of who can sell what to iPhone users and how much of a cut they'll take for the privilege. Fantastic, I'm glad we could agree those are two very different scenarios.

I'm wondering what all these people are going to do/say when the EU mandates they must have a backdoor to all encryption.

Not all companies are governed by greed.
Smaller companies will fight for the users with cheaper prices, same for the rival app stores, they cant hope to attract users if they will charge same 30% apple does, they will go to 10-15% tops for pay to play games and subscription kind of apps.
Epic takes 12% for their PC Game sales, which is reasonable in my opinion.
I know a bunch of clients we develop web sites/apps for that charge less money because they refuse to publish their apps in the apple app store and simply use progressive web app we develop for them.
If your take is true we wouldn’t have had 15yrs of the App Store! It’s been an unmitigated success and paid out billions to developers and started thousands of devs shops etc. if they were all so impeded by this 30% (15% I think it’s is now right?) then no one would have survived.

The reality is we are here because the big boys (epic et al) went freemium and destroyed the concept of normal devs making a decent margin from their sales. It’s literally called “a race to the bottom”. Where the big boys in a market undercut the normal pricing because they use their profits from elsewhere and subsidise their business activity.

Freemium gaming forced everyone into giving away apps for free and forcing games to be divided in a way where the money was made outside of the App Store but used the AppStore to gain the customer. Which is why Apple put the anti steering thing in the first place to prevent companies gaming the system.

Apples policies literally created the indie game dev scene as a viable entity. Big game companies destroyed it. And now people blame Apple. Everyone forgets how we got to where we are.

Should we be subjugated by big government? No. However, I'm certainly willing to draw the line somewhere other than "allow corporations to operate with impunity."

Aren’t these like cross region license agreements with different jurisdictions?
On one hand a dev’s contract with Apple USA can contain whatever clauses both sides agree to (i.e. charge per download).
On the other hand the eu can insist anyone can run an App Store on devices sold in the EU.
I’m not even sure the two things are mutually exclusive. Apple would not be impeding any devs from releasing in the EU with that charge. Or does the DMA explicitly say otherwise?
Im fairly sure that these days App Stores whether from Apple or Google are GeoBased, so if a developer publishes their app for only US market, i from EU wont be able to find it in the app store or i will but it will say the app is not yet available in your location.
DMA is only interested for EU userbase, so if you have 2 companies like Epic has where 1 operates in the US and rest of the world and one operates only in EU then obviously Epic's main account is still banned and wont be listed for World wide users who are outside the EU.
Based on that i assume that companies will either have to be based out of EU or open another branch that is based in the EU to benefit from the new changes while respecting old apple terms and conditions for every other region they operate in.
There are many things we dont know for certain as no competitor released a rival app store yet, but few are developing.

I just have to say, it is really refreshing to see so much of the sentiment turning against Apple with their continual actions of disregard for rules.

This is a company showing an out of control level of brazenness and they really must be reined in.

Love, like or dislike Apple - it's not healthy to have a corporation with this much power and such disregard for rules and regulations, let alone simply the actual interest of "choice" for their customers and developers.

Well yes. Apple does bend over backwards to comply with China's laws.

Oy! Now I have to wonder if my kids really like me🤔 or it's Stockholm syndrome.😬
Absolutely... people tend to forget that Apple does all kinds of crap for Chinese gov whenever they order them to give info about chinese users and other things because China is a huge ass market that apple cant afford to get banned from, especially when they manufacture lots if not most of their products there..

I'm wondering what all these people are going to do/say when the EU mandates they must have a backdoor to all encryption.
People who are pro DMA are likely going to also have very strong views about encryption. I would say there is a big overlap in this venn diagram.

But seriously, do you think everyone who is for this law is mindlessly cheering for everything that comes out of Brussels? We have opinions based on facts and believes, like everyone else.
