Exactly this !!!

My friends use torrent client on android. No problems. Download a movie in background. Use splitscreen on 5,5" device to watch series and browse the web or check social media. Things I simply can't do with my iPhone plus ! Apple should finally open up.

Yes. It's like falling in love with your rapist.

That’s one of the dumbest comparisons I have read all night. You should feel bad about comparing bad business practices it’s rape.

It has nothing to do with "protecting their turf". Apple has to provide similar features that their competitors offer. Streaming games to a phone...... that's the kind of thing ill switch to android over.

I agree. And I dont think some Apple followee's really appreciate the typical Steam user, or the difference in market segmentation. I have many contacts on my Steam account who I chat wth regularly. They all have hundreds of games linked to their account, some of them over 1000. All of them are avid gamers. Not once, and I mean not a single time, has someone told me "Geez, I dont know if I should buy this new release on Steam or on iOS." . It doesnt happen.

On the other hand I own a SteamLink and have been tempted to buy more. But now that the SteamLink app is out on android, I am far more inclined to get an android tv device as it can cover the steamlink app and be more than a one trick pony. Sadly I would much rather buy another AppleTV, but Apple have completely shot themselves in the foot.

This move isnt avoiding competition as much as it is driving customers away. Apple have completely lost the plot.

I use an Iphone, Apple watch and Ipad pro so I'm fairly invested in the IOS system, this is a massive kick in the teeth. I have no problem with apple keeping trash apps out of the store, but to refuse users the option to use a well designed and apparently really good app like this simply because they are concerned its better than the options they get revenue from is shocking.

We going to loose MS office to force us into Iworks as well?
Spotify going to be kicked out so we all use apple music?
How about kindle so we all use apple books?

Sets a very bad precedent and doesn't inspire confidence from me as a user or I'd expect developers who will worry their offering might be 'too good' and be refused a place in the store as it'll compete with apples offering.

No, they’re not going to kick out MS Office or Spotify or Kindle. Let’s not spread FUD.

I feel bad for laughing, but I feel the user was not making fun of rape victims, but more so that Apple is bending people's wallets over backwards, and giving them the poopy end of the stick in return. It must be hard for people to be loyal to Apple with the sheer amount of bad publicity they have been receiving lately. Not repairing customers products, batterygate, throttling, bendgate, etc. Just seems like they are allowing the competition to scoop up it's customer base.

Exist doesn’t mean they’re relevant.
iPad is the only successful tablet around.

What is with you people comparing movies/music with app/games.

Sure apple also sells/rents apple-branded music and movies but it’s completely different compared to an ecosystem of thousands game devs thriving in the appstore.

It’s not (only?) about the cut..

10 inch Android tablets still sell, whether you like them or not is a different question.

I’d be surprised if they cared about the devs more so than the money.

I don’t see why the comparisons are invalid, given the reason Apple gave and services like Spotify and Apple Music.

Not very surprising is it? If they remove the functionality to buy games within the app I think Apple might reconsider.

I must say though, this is the first time I’ve ever been remotely tempted to switch to Android.

Edit: The more I think about this, the less sense it makes. What are the potential users of this app (ie, people who play PC games) more likely to do - forget about PC games and buy Angry Birds 15 instead, or move to Android and continue playing PC games now with the ability to stream them to their iPadwannabes? I know what I think is more likely, and it doesn’t increase revenues for APPL. Even the probable most common outcome, that people continue playing PC games without the ability to steam to their iPad is neutral for Apple - there’s no benefit for them in any outcome.
Beside how questionable it is that gaming is such an important part of having a phone or iPad to you...

What’s the point of streaming a game on an IPad or even worse iPhone? You still need a computer and you still neeed to stay withing Wi-fi range (or Ethernet cable length)... why would ever want to play on another devices??

I know this probably wouldn’t have worked well as this type of game streaming from a PC doesn’t even work great if you are wired, but this is still rather disappointing behaviour.

That’s the thing. I buy Apple products because they’re the best ones for me. I’ve had nothing but positive experiences from Apple Support, probably because I don’t open up my machines and break them. My iPhones didn’t run into throttle gate or battery gate or bend gate. And these actions don’t seem to be hurting Apple, whose sales are single digit up in iPhones year after year.

So I don’t feel they’re bending anything over and giving a poopy end of anything. Then again, I would just go buy an Android phone and Chromebook if they did. I tend to believe in voting with your feet/wallet.

You‘re basing your quote on the fact that the Qualcomm chip is superior only in 3DMark? Goes a long way towards understanding microchip architecture :) And please remember to compare it with the iPhones that will be released this year.

Even if the iPhone won, it’d still be a pointless synthetic benchmark.

Okay, this makes some events this past week make more sense (at least to me).

About a week ago, Valve notified some of the publishers of games on Steam that were previously approved, that now their game might be considered 'sexually explicit', and would be removed if the game wasn't edited further to remove the explicit content. Some of these games were long available on Steam, so everyone was puzzled; Valve offered no explanation. Later, they backtracked a bit, saying maybe specific games were still okay. It was a mystery.

Until now. This is just my theory, with no knowledge behind it, but I bet Apple was fine with Valve's app until they realized that some games on Valve could be considered porn. Apple doesn't want porn on their phones, even if it's really on some other machine. Even if Valve ditched the 'porn games' now, once the app was released, Valve could approve any future 'porn game' they wanted. I bet that's what Apple balked at.
Oh right, cos there is no such thing as a web browser on an iPad which can freely look at porn. Oh and there aren't a proliferation of other VNC remote desktop type apps already approved and in common use on iOS.... right... yeah.

I take it you have never used the near flawless Steam Link, which streams in the same exact way with excellent results?

I was looking forward to streaming PC games to my AppleTV 4K as it'd remove the need for my SteamLink. If Apple thinks this will help them protect App store revenue I can't help but feel they are wrong on this one as most people will either buy a different device to stream the games on or play it on the PC / Mac device natively. I can't imagine it will hurt Apple banning it other than a bit of negative press though I just struggle to see the reasoning unless they are planning on releasing an AAA games capable console.

Man, it‘s a remote control app. The magic is on the encoding side.

Apple’s failed big time on this one. It‘s like prohibiting live video streaming apps since they might stream what Apple‘s selling in their iTunes department.

I know Apple have that big strategy about the „gaming store“, but steam link sells their own boxes for 5 bucks when discounted. One HDMI less. And less AppleTV use. Well done :/

Guess I‘ll spend some bucks on a Android phone instead of a second AppleTV now.

Have you thought about a Chrome OS tablet that runs Android apps?
There isn't any ChromeOS tablet as good as an iPad when it comes to hardware. I doubt I could use any other tablet now that I have seen 120hz refresh rate. The only alternative to iPad which is as good is the Surface lineup but that's more like a laptop than a tablet.

I know Google can do it. They are coming out with a Pixel watch this year and if they could just get the tablet area straightened out, I would jump ship.

That is the rub, the 120hz refresh thing. Without that, I’d say a Pixelbook is still a good option.

Apple just want to have control over every little thing. If they could charge for any internet transaction that takes place in iOS safari, they surely would. They don't have enough billions in cash yet. Must save more. Gotta build more gold bullion towers in their vault, five thousand simply isn't enough.

Declare Apple a monopolists (which they are), file an anti trust lawsuit. Mission accomplished.

The arbitrary and discriminating behaviour in the App-Store is anti-competitive (proven by that statement in the article that there's similar apps online - guess what? That's called competition, a very fundamental principle of capitalism) and needs some "legal attention" rather sooner than later.
Google allows 3rd party app stores, so they are safe. But Apple having completely shut down any sideloading and may prevent installing any purchased Apps by removing them from the App-Store is against consumer laws. At least in the EU I'm pretty sure there would be enough ground for legal action against Apple. (EULA, T&C are below, not above, the law!).

Apple can’t be a monopolist without first having a monopoly.

This is perhaps the dumbest decision has made in along time (besides iOS 11).

They will no doubt overturn this decision, unless they are waiting to announce something at WWDC.

Yes, all that is true. But when do logic and reason have anything to do with business decisions, particularly these days?
