More than this is **** as a consumer; I feel sorry for the development team that has spent many, many hours making a great iOS app, and then just getting told that the app they've developed is basically useless. I dabble in programming and app-production myself, and I'd be really darn pissed if I'd poured so many hours of development into a project that was then just deemed "a conflicting business" and killed. I mean, if the review guidelines very definitively say my app won't get approved; I'm the fool for starting the project - like if we were talking a porn app for instance. But with something like this, the dev team must feel really bad about it all. And considering Valve even was featured at WWDC last time, and it's the SteamVR SDK that's officially supported by Apple, it's weird they couldn't figure something out; Either to never start the project, or to know for sure it'd go through

Not very surprising is it? If they remove the functionality to buy games within the app I think Apple might reconsider.

I must say though, this is the first time I’ve ever been remotely tempted to switch to Android.

Edit: The more I think about this, the less sense it makes. What are the potential users of this app (ie, people who play PC games) more likely to do - forget about PC games and buy Angry Birds 15 instead, or move to Android and continue playing PC games now with the ability to stream them to their iPadwannabes? I know what I think is more likely, and it doesn’t increase revenues for APPL. Even the probable most common outcome, that people continue playing PC games without the ability to steam to their iPad is neutral for Apple - there’s no benefit for them in any outcome.

Why would removing in-app purchases be good for Apple? If they leave them in, they get 30% of all of those transactions

How do we, as customers, file a lawsuit against Apple over this?

This is akin to if Tesla said I couldn’t take my car somewhere else to be painted. I bought the car - it’s my right to pick what services I have performed on it. If I want to paint it a color other than the ones Tesla offers, that’s none of their business.

Apple offers a platform where any software can be installed on it, but, completely arbitrarily, only from their stores (unless I choose to jailbreak, something that they repeatedly and constantly try to prevent me from doing.)

As Valve says, there are many other remote access-style apps available in the App Store, so the reasoning behind Apple's decision is unclear.

It's quite obvious what the reasoning is. It's a platform competing directly against the App Store, and it has full-blown games on it, not crappy mobile ones. If Apple carries on like this they're going to be at the sharp end of an anticompetitive lawsuit, and that won't do their PR any good whatsoever. This kind of thing takes my admiration for Apple down several notches.

Apple’s attempt at gaming for Apple TV has been underwhelming. This new app would have brought a TON of gamers not only to purchase Apple TVs but also into their iOS ecosystem.

You can access your Amazon, Hulu and Netflix library, why not your Steam library? I hope the ability to sell games in the app is not the dealbreaker. That could be removed, just purchase online, but still be able to steam your game library.

Really surprised at Apple’s decision, it could benefit them on so many levels. Let’s hope it gets reversed.

I've been a regular on here for over 5 years and a huge Apple advocate throwing thousands of dollars at the company over the years - sitting through the Apple training courses to aid my company become a reseller etc etc but this post has finally made me sign up for a MacRumors account to vent. I'm disgusted and running out of reasons after all these years to stay an advocate. For me this is the straw that broke the camel's back.

I think I’m done. As can be observed in my signature, I’ve dwindled down the number of ties that I have to Apple over the years.

I’m feeling that there’s nothing left. This was the straw that broke the camel’s back for me. When it’s time to replace my iPhone, I’ll be looking at Android devices.

See ya here next year bragging about your new iPhone...

Another reason to stick to Android. In addition to this app, I've been playing snes and nes games via emulator on my Android phones for years. Works flawlessly, even N64 games most recently. Apple is so limiting and short sighted in this regard.

The Steam Link app will come eventually. They really have no idea what they got themselves into. It also show their arrogance by thinking people actually care about their crap games in the App Store.

How often do you play PC games and how often would you use this feature? I ask because I assume it must be “all the time” for this to effect you so severely. I see so many people up on arms but this is a niche app. I would have loved to stream my Steams games from my computer to my Apple TV (it finally wouldn’t be worthless for gaming) but this is so low on my priority list I couldn’t imagine dropping my iPhone because of it.

Fully expected this... There are a lot of games on Steam that are also on the App Store and there's a chance that people would prefer to buy it via Steam to have it on both platforms, which Apple gets no percent of.

It looks like Valve's planned Steam Link app for iOS devices isn't coming after all, because Apple has rejected the app due to "business conflicts."

In a statement, Valve said that Apple initially approved Steam Link for release on May 7, but ultimately decided to reject the app because of conflicts that had not been recognized by the original review team.Valve's appeals have not been successful at the current point in time, and the company is now hoping that media attention may spur Apple to change its mind.

The Steam Link app for iOS, which was announced on May 9, is designed to allow Steam users to play their Steam games on an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV using either a 5GHz WiFi network or a wired Ethernet connection to a host PC or Mac.

Valve was planning to launch the Steam Link app this week, and Valve had worked to add Steam Link support for the Steam Controller and Made for iPhone controllers ahead of the app's debut.

Earlier this week, our sister site TouchArcade was able to go hands-on with the Steam Link app and said that it works so well that "it feels like there's some kind of actual wizardry powering it all." In what might have been a bit prescient, TouchArcade editor-in-chief Eli Hodapp said he was "dumbfounded" Apple was allowing it given how good the gaming experience was.As Valve says, there are many other remote access-style apps available in the App Store, so the reasoning behind Apple's decision is unclear. It is not known if Apple will ultimately end up reversing its position on the Steam Link app given the media attention, which has happened in the past, but we've reached out to the company for a comment.

It's the principal of the matter. Apple has a monopoly. We can either say enough is enough and move to another platform, or we can bend over and accept them. This is no different than Comcast stomping on Net Neutrality.

I’ll wait for Apple to comment before getting outraged. They will comment now that Valve is making a stink.

Crap. I was looking forward to this because I have more than a few games I'd like to play on the 100" projector screen attached to my Apple TV.

Any Corp is gonna protect their turf. I'd make the same decision.

And this is why Apple lost me as a customer for TVs. Corporations need to balance revenue lines with long term ecosystem growth.

Apple TV is junk, it really is especially for it’s price point. Sure they protect their app revenue, but will that be off set by customers abondoning the plateform

This is where Apple failed last time Steve left, and why andriod has risen to world dominance. Apple last stand is in North American and japan, but those markets will be chipped away with poor product experience (Siri and minor adoption for home automation)

And that is the point of my rant. Sure Apple is protecting one of it’s business lines, but at what cost. Apple can’t slap it’s name to garbage products forever, Tim is burning that customer loyalty up fast.

Well, that’s disappointing... I was hoping I could stream my Steam games to my iPad, but I guess I’ll have to keep doing it on my laptop.
