the more processors you support the more bloated you are that is one of the reason windows is windows

you don't get my point. I never worked in my 32 years on windows and never will. But not having an option to have a faster mobile platt form for my agency work is quite annoying. Especially since the technology exist. Bear in mind, some people here make their living by purchasing apple for their business. I am no gamer or such, I need really mobile power. I am always between offices.

That's all. Like I said, I wish apple would offer 2 versions for PRO gear.

At the end of the day I need to buy anyway one, I have no choice.

Really? They claimed 5 hours on my macbook pro and even when the thing was brand new it was impossible to reach the 5 hour mark. I bet with normal usage- surfing and what not you wont see more than four hours.

In fine print it says "8 hours acheived with computer set to Better Battery Life setting"... so unless you do that.. with a dim background... and no backlit keyboard, then maybe. :D

Battery Life

Anyone watch the new commercial?

"8hrs per charge, and can be recharged for up to 1000 times. That's a typical 5 year lifespan".

Really? OK most ppl with 8hrs charge on a laptop really don't charge it more than 1 time per day. However if its your SOLE machine - as is becoming a HUGE trend (reason for laptops outselling desktops; Students Business Professional in any field), then daily charging is common.

So, lets take a quick thought.

365days/year, times 5yrs is 1825. So how is THIS a typical year? IF you charge you battery 2.2x per day in those 5years then you reach taht 1825. Lets say only charge the battery only HALF of the days EACH year ... 182.5days. Now charge by 5yrs then you get 912.5 charges, this meets Apples claim.

Now the BIG questions WILL Apple:

A) pay for the shipping box to you to package and send in your laptop for battery replacement? Or will an extended warranty cover this?
B) How long are you expected to WAIT for the battery replacement?
C) Should Apple screwup and send you back your 17"MBP with a faulty or non-charging battery; Are you compensated for your "EXTENDED" inconvenience?
D) Based on A & C; Will they send you a replacement to work on should you need to send in your laptop for repairs?
E) based on D; will iWork the document part or your MobileMe/.Mac account be augmented & used to serve up your documents while your machine is being repaired?

I'd like to apologize to fans of Tony Bennet. I made a comment earlier today, in another thread in my disbelief why they chose him. And to be honest seeing the keynote and hearing his performance I'm actually QUITE impressed! The quality of his voice, no backup vocals to assist him singing was actually a treat & testament to quality performers.

Now, the only thing that bothered me is seeing just 1 person initially stand up to give him a standing ovation - THEN the rest of the crowd followed suit - I guess out of respect. What I TRUELY LOVED about his performance is his ability to recognize that the crowd may not have been fully enjoying his performance (you can tell he surveyed the crowd midway through with knowledgeable eyes). Yet with mature tact, he continued to perform and even give his all (I'm not sure, but passion was definately there during the 2nd half of his performance) regardless. He DESERVED a standing ovation. Just a shame that only 1 person initially gave it to him for a whole 1.5seconds before everyone else in the crowd decided to follow suit (as such, falling in line).

Phil has earned my respect though ... he WENT to Mr. Bennet and thanked him and even swapped words! If Phil can lay off the sweets a bit (or have the team improve that Nike+iPod kit and test using it to show how it helps), and show more passion in his voice - less monotone, then he'll liven up a crowd much better.

Not bad Phil, not bad, better than I expected.

I don't see how his weight makes him any less charismatic a presenter - it's not like he is morbidly obese and it's distracting.

Agreed. But for me it was distracting at the beginning when the put his hands behind his back and I could tell there the dip of his bellybutton began and ended (the deep circle) actually showed through that blue shirt. He's a doughboy and its actually part of his character, I don't mean anything by it. As an observation, in my city Mac users male/female are commonly the best in shape amongst their PC counterparts regardless of where I see either. Phil should consider wearing black as it gives the appearance of 10lbs lighter.

Did anyone notice that standing ovation - pause - at first? Someone near the front row in white stood up first. Normally standing ovations are very commonly a consensus ... say a few ppl standing up in unison at first.

ok, can someone explain the 1000 charges to me?

Sure. If the battery lasts about 8 hours on a charge and can be recharged up to 1000 times, it will go dead in 333.333 days -- less than a year, if exhausted and recharged every day. Apple I'm sure is counting on people getting a few days of "normal" use out of their MacBooks before recharging them. But still, it seems like it amounts to a lot less than the five years Schiller touted.

Edit: Just saw the more detailed analysis above.

How can you possibly deduce this in a city of over 2 million? Unless you're sampling something incredible insignificant like 10 people or so.

I didn't even know you could tell what computer someone uses by looking at them.

So why would they just throw glass on top of a matte screen? what do we as the consumers gain from this?

this macworld was an EPIC fail. I don't think i'm going to be spending money on a mac unless they update their hardware fast.

idk, but thats how they do it. Just like with PCs. The desktops, there may be a cover peace on the back, but on other models theres an opening with a slot for anything

Sad.
This must be the most worthless, inane contribution I've ever seen on this site.

WTF are you talking about??? Why are people always posting about things they don't know or understand???

Dell 17" Precision "pro" laptop. Configured as close to the Macbook pro as posible:

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T9400 (2.53GHz, 6M L2 Cache, 1067MHZ) Dual Core
Windows Vista® Business SP1, With media
17" UltraSharp™ WUXGA (1920x1200) LCD Display
Integrated 2.0 MP webcam with dual digital array microphone
4.0GB, DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM, 2 DIMMS
320GB Hard Drive, 7200RPM with Free Fall Sensor
8X DVD+/-RW Slot Load
NVIDIA Quadro FX 2700M, 512MB Discrete

Price::::: $3,955*!!!!!!!

That's right, an equally configured Dell pro laptop cost MORE than ONE THOUSAND US DOLLARS THAN THE 17" MACBOOK PRO.

Try the same thing with the Mac Pro and the Dell Xeon Workstations with EXACT SAME SPECS, the Mac Pro is close to $2,000 cheaper than the exact same Dell.

The $17" MacBook pro is incredible cheap! :-D

You can't get the quadro on the Macbook "pro". The dell will hold 16GB memory, two HDs, quad core processors. It really is a pro laptop. The Apple isn't. Sorry.

I think that you kids say "epic fail" or something like that...

8 hours is more then ok, other 17' laptops barly make it out of 2. but will the 8 hours...

JFK -> HKG - 16 hr 10 min
HKG -> SFO - 11 hr 55 min
LAX -> NRT - 11 hr 40 min

I suppose that I could fly business class to have a seat with a power port, but the b-class ticket costs more than 2 MBPs!

If Apple are going to do this idiotic thing with the non-replaceable batteries, then they should either license the magsafe connector or partner with a company like APC to make sure that external battery packs are easy to use with the Apple laptops.

Instead of extra batteries for all of my laptops - I use a couple of these and the adapter plug for each laptop. Magsafe not covered, however.

The removable battery "issue" is more of a mental thing right now. We're still used to Li-Ion batteries that need to be swapped out or replaced all the time.

Have faith in the new technology -- 8 hours should be plenty for a single charge.

Overall, this is an outstanding laptop.

Oh, I don't think it's an issue. Rather, I think Apple may as well just have the "easy access single panel" on the MB and 15" MBP. The RAM is behind the panel anyway; why not just have a single panel for the rest of the internals? If Apple used (and designed the panel to accommodate) screws that don't fall out of the panel, it'd make upgrading parts easier and reduce manufacturing parts even further. They may as well have done that from the outset.

that is not the case as it would take the battery time to charge also most users pro or not will not be working at a computer on a daily basis away from a power source for consistently long and extended periods of time most people simply are not out in the middle of no where surfing the internet for 20 hours a day sorry to discourage you guys but it don't work that way i know you love to find fault but find it where it is due don't make one where there isn't one

So, what exactly is user replaceable this time around? Most people want the flexablty to add or remove what they please. With laptops, I know you cant do much, mostly ram and HD are your stuck with.

where "very soon" is defined as...

Physical media will be dead very soon. Thus it doesn't surprise me that Apple hasn't yet included Blue Ray drives in their systems. Who knows, they may never do it.

Where "very soon" is defined as "when 90% of the homes around the world have internet connection download speeds of sustained 50 Mbps or more".

Invest in Blu-ray stocks, it will be around a long time.

Your theory only works if you run the laptop exclusively off battery every time you use it. Most people who have a 17" laptop as their sole machine would have it plugged into an outlet, which means the battery is not discharging and recharging in the same manner it would if it were running off battery alone. In fact, it's perceivable that if it were someone's sole machine and they ran it off an outlet, the battery could last much much longer than 5 years.

Also, their use of the word 'typical' will be related to market research based on the 'average' laptop user. That's how words like 'typical' get to be used.

But anyway, this laptop is so ridiculously and prohibitively expensive (especially here in NZ) that I doubt that anyone but the most dedicated would purchase one.

I need a new computer, and I've been patiently waiting for the new mini to come out so I can buy one, but I don't know how much longer I can wait - my Commodore 64 is on it's last legs.

where are you Mini???!!!

You mean mini-tower, no?

The Phil didn't talk about the new Apple quad-core mini-tower today.

And now that The Steve is suddenly healthy (but still thin), it may be a while before Apple listens to its customers.

the problem i have with it is, once the Rev B design comes out, im sure it will use a different style battery than this Rev A version, and then the Rev A battery will be discontinued and becoming impossible to find except for ebay where you will pay through the nose. Apple's done it before, they're doing it again.
I, personally, don't want to have a paperweight in a year and a half.

All I see are sore people who cannot afford it! suck it and buy one if you need one, or shut it and move on.

hey and i just read on the news how Alcoa is slashing something like 20% of its aluminum output. that's great news! now since every mac except the mini uses aluminum, we can look forward to price hikes!

All I see are sore people who cannot afford it! suck it and buy one if you need one, or shut it and move on.

I just got a letter this week from MasterCard that they're raising my limit from $49,000 to $55,000.

But I still don't think that the 17" MBP is a good thing.
