If you don't like it, don't buy it...that just means I don't have to wait long in line for mine. ;) I'm happy with just about everything...I can't think of anything I would change about this 17" model. If you don't like this model keep your current computer or get a older model on the cheap!

Seems like a lot say this same thing everytime a new mac comes out. But yet, most dont even buy one. Its all just talk.

I mean, how can you guys afford a new computer at every revision apple does?

Switch

This is painful: Over the course of the last decade, I have invested several thousand dollars in OS X software and countless hours learning to use it. I hate windows: OS X is a superior operating system both by breeding (MACH/bsd) and construction.

But screw this. I'm tired of wishing apple would make some hardware options that suit me rather than their shareholders (e.g. having to buy a $2k Mac Pro to get basic upgradability, loss of firewire on MacBook...because it's not "pro" enough, etc). And i'm tired of not being able to do anything about it except whine on forums.

I know switching will mean being abused by a different set of people (MS), but at least i'll have my choice of hardware on which to be abused. At least, i can register my dissatisfaction with apple in some meaningful, even if inconsequential, way using my wallet.

Good luck to everyone.

...It is a bit premature to believe that downloadable low quality movies are going to take over anytime now when bandwidth caps are being tested and the vast majority of the population don't have broadband....

don't you hate it when facts intrude:

"7/2/2008 |
Washington, DC – Some 55% of all adult Americans now have a high-speed internet connection at home, according to a May 2008 survey conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project."

Even in 2007 the percentage was pegged at 47%.

quit deleting peoples posts. Thats discrimination

The mods delete when they feel it is necessary because of breaking rules or inciting hostility. Their website, their choice.

Be happy they just delete them without even threatening you. We have great mods here who tend to give people chances rather than punishing immediatly, a deleted post means you need to watch what you post a bit better.

I have a PC as well, I do not like it; a second or two faster processor in what for me is a less productive computing environment is not an advantage or faster.

After 8 hours? I plug in: airport, coffee shop, client's, office, home. In addition I can not remember the last time I worked uninterrupted at anything for 8 hours, especially on my laptop. I used to regularly fly NRT to SFO, even with old Li-On I would not put in 8 hours of CPU time even though I could.

True for the PC thing somewhat... so imagine what type of machine you'd have with quad core and Mac OS X on a laptop.

Yeah, there are plenty of places you can plug it in, but there are plenty of times when you may not be able to. But I understand.

When I flew to Vegas for a conference, I spent my 4 hours editing a video for another project. And MAN! does FCP and motion churn through battery power. I know that the 17" batter will get 8 hours under normal wireless use, but what about multiple pro apps open and FCP rendering HD video?

But I do understand. That's not sarcasm.... I am just throwing out hypothetical/real life examples.

It truly is amazing how vocal the battery-swapping, blu-ray cuddling minority can be. Of the entire mac user base, I would be shocked if more than 5% would really benefit from being able to quickly switch batteries or watch blu-ray on their laptop. However, I would expect nearly 100% of the user base to benefit from extended battery life.

Perhaps Apple's user base used to be only that vocal minority, and so now they feel upset that they're not being catered to. Too bad. Apple is a business, and they're doing what makes sense for their business.

Please confirm look of Matte 17-inch

can someone please confirm if there's a TRUE photo of the Matte new 17-inch MacBook Pro online yet? I heard that there's no black bezel and I also heard that it's not TRUE matte. Is this true? Someone who REALLY knows this answer please tell me.

Thank you.

Yes the bezel is the aluminum color of the laptop, as shown in the keynote.

What do u mean TRUE matte?

There is no glass and its called matte, i dont know what else it could be:confused:

Well I read the following quote somewhere online today. Is this true?

"Anti-glare is not the same as matte. Anti-glare is simply frosting on the glass whereas matte uses fresnel lens technology to create a full wide-angle view with no reflection."

That person didnt bother paying attention the the fact that there will be no glass covering the screen.

Personally I don't care much about the "fixed" battery but;
17" Pro laptop without full size keyboard (numeric keypad)..?! Give me a break... It even looks ridiculous with all that wasted space on both sides.
... and what happened to Apple's "close" relationship with Intel - why is 17" MacBook not using the latest Core 2 Quatro processor...?

The new 17incher is just about the ideal laptop. If I had the money, I would be really tempted. Though, 15inch is about the right size for me. As for the fixed battery...by the time the battery died on my last laptop, it was already over 4 years old....and I was a heavy user. I'm completely guessing, but, by the time this new MacBook Pro battery dies, it will be time for a new computer anyway.

Bravo to Apple for releasing the best 17inch laptop in the world! :D ...for the time being.

Seriously. Its not an accident Apple is growing at twice the pace of the overall industry. This sucks for those few people that carry and actually require multiple batteries, but for the other 99% (yes I'd bet money it's that high) we're stoked with longer battery life and a greater max number of charges. This is a very solid update.

I will return the lack of sarcasm... isn't using FCP on a laptop a compromise to begin with? :) Laptops have always presented a trade off, as do the different OS.

I have been buying at the top of Apple's pro line for nearly a decade, and can say without placing my tongue firmly in the side of my cheek each successive laptop provided better processing, RAM, HD, resolution, functionality, quality of build and durability. Every single one outlasted my co-workers' equivalent Windows laptops and generally was handed off to some friend or family member for another year or two of service before being retired. I have little doubt that this latest incarnation will perform an order of magnitude better than my current ALG4 and provide a solid 3-4 years of utility, just like my experience with my AL and TiBook, and the TiBook and Pismo. In adjusted dollars not only would I be getting a significantly better laptop, it is actually less expensive. While it is possible to find a Windows 17" laptop with a better processor, or removable battery, or a Blueray drive or an $1800 price tag. I would never recover the $2000 in lost productivity and would curse the squeaky, plastic box and uncomfortable OS daily for 18 months until I was forced to replace it because it crapped out.

To each his own, and while I do not think Jobs walks on water or Apple cannot make a dud, today's 17" is better than yesterday's, or last October's and the price is actually $500 less than what I paid for my 17" AL G4.

numeric keypad on laptop = ewwwww

Seriously, I HATE off center keyboards.

K, so one spends $5249 (plus tax) on one of these fully loaded... NOT including software, AppleCare, MobileMe, any external peripherals (remote, keyboard, mouse, monitor), a case, or any display adapters

(It is $1200 for 4GB of RAM?, Apple sells MacBook WITH 4GB for RAM for $1449. Oh yeah, better get the upgrade from the factory because it can't be purchased on one's own or upgraded later...)

and what do they end up with....

USB 2.0 when 3.0 is around the corner
A dual-core processor when quad-core mobile processors have already dropped
A DVD writer when Blu-ray is quickly becoming the standard

 Were they supposed to wait for usb 3? Show me that mystical computer of yours that has a better usb than usb 2:rolleyes:

Bluray becoming the standard.....VERY debateable

You know, I just wrote this great post here talking about how the MBP is pretty crappy value for money.

Then I clicked on over to Dell and built myself a comparable XPS system...and it came in at $3513 US. And it was 11 pounds.

So I deleted my original post and wrote this instead XD

Granted, it has a beefier vid card, but yeah...I'm pretty surprised by that right there :)

I'm happy about the built in battery w/ extended life :D

Does anyone think they will update it at/around WWDC? I got my Power Mac 2 weeks before the release of the Mac Pro's and that sucked! :p

The reason windows runs better on a mac, is because apple makes their own drivers for windows to work on their hardware... instead of windows trying to write software for hardware they never even created... or know how it works.

Also, I have a MBA and the battery life on it is just as advertized, i have over 100 cycles on it and i've only had it for 6 months. The batteries in all Macs haven't really been a big issue, they are the best batteries on the market for laptops today... The only time people will have the right to complain is when they actually buy a MBP and try it. (like im gonna:rolleyes:)
