So, what exactly is user replaceable this time around? Most people want the flexablty to add or remove what they please. With laptops, I know you cant do much, mostly ram and HD are your stuck with.

Well, given that you can easily access the internals of the computer without voiding your warranty and without risk of damage to the computer, the hard drive, the optical drive, and the RAM are all technically user replaceable. The battery would be, too, but Apple doesn't seem to be keen on making replacements easily purchased.

Windows is windows, like you said, it can be installed on macs. (infact it runs a lot better on a mac then on a PC) PCs use mostly AMD and Intel, so your comment is pointless

And yours is beyond pointless.

Windows does not run "a lot better" on Apple hardware - Apple buys the same commodity chips as every other Intel OEM.

If you compare Windows on a low-end eMachine against Windows on a Mac Pro - you might believe that silly claim.

But otherwise - drop the fanboi cheers. An Apple with Intel chipset X, CPU Y, memory Z -- it's simply not a "lot better" than a Gateway with X/Y/Z.

I find it interesting that the people who hate the gloss tended to be those who hated the black bezel too, well looks like you got your wish, no black bezel on that sucker.

17" MacBook Pro is not cheap at all!!!

Don't worry, that guy/gal got it way wrong in the first place.

They have dropped the weight to 6.6lbs though. Not bad...

Very bad. That means less hardware to put inside of what is supposed to be a professional/high end machine with desktop class power. But I guess it's only by Apple's desktop standards which mean another laptop.

I just got a letter this week from MasterCard that they're raising my limit from $49,000 to $55,000.

But I still don't think that the 17" MBP is a good thing.

Psssh! I can get them 33% off and tax free and I still don't see where I'd want one save for necessity.

JFK -> HKG - 16 hr 10 min
HKG -> SFO - 11 hr 55 min
LAX -> NRT - 11 hr 40 min

I suppose that I could fly business class to have a seat with a power port, but the b-class ticket costs more than 2 MBPs!

If you're doing that kind of flying for your company and they're not springing for biz class, you really ought to consider a new company. :)

To me, one of the most enjoyable thing about traveling for work was the downtime on the flights themselves. Just relax, read a book, pop a few Ambien with a vodka tonic chaser and all is well with the world.

You must work for Apple, then...

Since Apple obviously thinks that everyone flies B-class and has no need for carrying a spare battery on a trip....

In the real world in the current economy, for most people B-class is not in the cards unless you're a senior VP. (And I was recently on a trip with my senior VP, and I asked "why aren't you up front". His reply was that "I laid off 20 people in our (small) group this quarter - how can I defend front cabin prices?")

Earth to Scotty. Come in Scotty.

What a friggin' arrogant post....

Here! Here!

I just flew Virgin American to SF from DC and they have a std power plug, LCD, and a choice of dozens of movies at each seat in coach. They are the new kids on the block, but I wouldn't be surprised if everyone else follows.

Maybe you won't need multiple batteries or Blu-Ray on long flights in the near future in coach and if your airline doesn't yet have these --- relax and have a vodka and tonic.

I hate u :(

I just wanted you to know this (I get shipped all over - Economy (even the CEOs travel this way)......

Besides Air Jamaica, I don't think I have ever or will ever fly anything other than Southwest. It's the bus of the skies, but I get their without being broke when I land.

Besides, after spending $3000 on a 17" netbook I better be a bit more money wise.

i think this is the first time apple has gotten it spot on with their pro laptops

If that spot is a pile of $h!t then right on!

Instead of introducing or at least updating a cheaper computer they introduce one that is more expensive than all the others? Financial/Economy crisis? A friend of mine got fired because his company lost a lot of money and that happened to many people. 2000$?

- A removable battery is a necessity. All OEMs makes dubious claims about battery performance. I haven't seen a MBA perform as advertised. I returned one so I should know. You will have to run this thing in super duper battery life mode to reproduce that estimated time and that conflicts with it being a pro workhorse doesnt it?

- Also if a battery goes bad who wants to be without their workstation? A simple battery swap would suffice? Everyone doesnt live by an apple store. Apple is starting to remind me of german car manufacturers. My M3 engine bay was covered in so much plastic it was a deterrent for anyone but BMW to work on it. In the end it costs the consumer because the setup is too intimidating to even change a spark plug.

- Bluray should be optional. People call it fringe technology for geeks yet they praise the inclusion of a $900 SSD? The screen resolution is high enough and cheaper devices have it. Professionals need to cater to an audience who is quickly adopting the technology. A "big bag of hurt" can be translated to we don't want to cannabalize itunes HD downloads.

-It is a bit premature to believe that downloadable low quality movies are going to take over anytime now when bandwidth caps are being tested and the vast majority of the population don't have broadband. If DL movies were set to take over Apple TV would be more than a "hobby"

- If Apple's market research was spot on, why did they feel the need to add a matte option to their pro laptop? After all, even their new ACD is glassy. Unless they could have been wrong... I have the new MBP and the reflections can be distracting. I fortunately use an external monitor with clamshell mode. I imagine the 17 buyers use it standalone so glassy is...

- hopefully that base doesnt make the RAM and HD sealed from user upgrades. We will have to wait and see but i surely rather not go through Apple for RAM or HD upgrade. I can think of better ways to burn money

The upgrade was lackluster but again they arent catering to me. But by the looks of it, the audience anticipating its release are somewhat indifferent as well. I was happy with the itunes update and the overdue 3G DL capability

There are a lot of better things you could spend your money on, get a cheeper computer, and something for the family may be...

I'm far from a fan boy. In fact, I hate that term. I like both PCs and macs, both windows and osx, both have their fair share of problems...... So I fall under that small percent who likes both.

and it actiully does run better. I had a vista based HP laptop, brand new and it was nice, but I experienced better performance on the mac.

I would have to think your an apple "fan boy" by saying such a comment.

Same price, better processor, better video, better construction, better battery = intent to order

Same price = $2800
better Proc = only for Macs. PCs up to dual 3.06 and quad 2.53
better constc = sure. It is much stronger
better batt = only for 8 hours.... then what?

All of that = Meh... Wait til Rev B or C to see more improvement.

If you don't like it, don't buy it...that just means I don't have to wait long in line for mine. ;) I'm happy with just about everything...I can't think of anything I would change about this 17" model. If you don't like this model keep your current computer or get a older model on the cheap!

The flights you have outlined would require not two but three of the previous 17" removable batteries and you would have to charge them up during the previous two days. While the flights are real world, the argument that a second battery would address this problem is false. Additionally, finding a TSA/HSA agent in the US that would permit three batteries through without a major hassle the majority of the time might be very difficult.

I have done this just fine. And at least you can replace the batteries. You are stuck hoping you can find a power cord sometime soon.

Even if you do, how long do you have to wait for a charge. I have had to get off a flight then rush to a seminar and present on battery power before.

Like my fiancee said, "Apple wants you to change your lifestyle to fit the machines."

...It is a bit premature to believe that downloadable low quality movies are going to take over anytime now when bandwidth caps are being tested and the vast majority of the population don't have broadband....

don't you hate it when facts intrude:

"7/2/2008 |
Washington, DC – Some 55% of all adult Americans now have a high-speed internet connection at home, according to a May 2008 survey conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project."

Even in 2007 the percentage was pegged at 47%. So where'd you get your "vast majority...don't"?

I have a PC as well, I do not like it; a second or two faster processor in what for me is a less productive computing environment is not an advantage or faster.

After 8 hours? I plug in: airport, coffee shop, client's, office, home. In addition I can not remember the last time I worked uninterrupted at anything for 8 hours, especially on my laptop. I used to regularly fly NRT to SFO, even with old Li-On I would not put in 8 hours of CPU time even though I could.
