Is it just me, or have all custom folders that you import into the Wallpaper selection window disappeared after installing Aperture 2?

I also have two "Aperture Project" folders in the window now and I can't remove one or add any new folders.

So here's the procedure to import your old Library into Aperture 2.0

Warning: You'll only be able to use this library in 2.0 after this. No going back.

1 - Back up old library
2 - Install Aperture 2.0
3 - Create Trial Library when prompted
4 - Drag original Library onto Aperture 2.0's Projects pain
5 - Update Library when prompted.

this didn't work for me. Keeps saying "Imported 0 Items." Anyone else have that problem?

If it's true that in order to use Nikon D3/D300 RAW files in Aperture, we are forced to buy Aperture 2,then Apple is playing a kind of extortion game. It's unconscionable that they would allow the Finder, iPhoto '08, and Preview to recognize and work with D3/D300 RAW and purposely not permit the existing version of Aperture to read those same files.

So instead of allowing the existing version of Aperture to read it, which it should be able to because the less sophisticated iPhoto can, Apple is forcing Aperture users to pay the $99 upgrade price. This is just insult upon injury. Not only did we have to wait three months for OS X to recognize D3/D300 files, but now that OS X can read those files natively, for some reason the current Aperture was not modified to do so and thus we are being coerced into upgrading to Aperture 2.

This is dirty pool and it is something that I truly did not expect from Apple. I have been an advocate of theirs since the first Macintosh came out in 1984. Never would I have thought that they would do something like this. This is a low and petty move unbecoming of a company like Apple.

Yeh and why doesn't OS9 support RAW - thats what really pisses me off.

Software gets 'old' in the eyes of developers (or maybe the management) - the latest iPhoto can use these RAW files and so can the latest Aperture, thats the way these things go.

But whats $90 - if you're photography-mad enough to HAVE to use RAW then the price is worth it surely?

Apple probably thought that since this is a PRO Application that people wanted Aperture 2 with the new features, just as much (if not more) as they wanted RAW support.

In my opinion, and not being a "professional" photography but more of a "hobbyist," I am not bugged to have to pay for Aperture 2 just to get RAW support.

If you look at in the way that you are paying $200 for RAW support then you will be excited to see all the "FREE" new features and everything else that is included in Aperture 2

Still no Curves?? sheesh I cant stand sliders when I know exactly where I want to bump the curve.

That sucks theres no d3/300 support in aperture 1.5 if I read correctly...seems like their might be some aperture to lightroom switchers!

I'm annoyed that I can't use the trial with my existing library (officially anyway). Despite this, my experience so far with my very minimal trial library is very impressive. Really noticeable speed increase on my MBP (on top of the boost that yesterday's graphics update/10.5.2 gave).

The new interface is an improvement except for:

Title bar seems to have grown an unnecessary chin (which grows even more if you set it to show "Icons and text".

Also, I wish it was still an option to have the main tool set on the title bar area. It might seem pedantic but I only have 1440 x 900px to play with - some users will have even less.

Obviously haven't had much time to play yet but the new adjustments (and their layout) seem great (and a little bit Lightroomesque ).

Yeah, I think I'll buy it when the UK store updates. Can someone confirm that the edu version is non-upgradable?

I been waiting a long time to get Aperture but specifically version 2.

Looks like it adds a lot of the photo editing features that made lightroom a favorate of some of the photograpphers.

Based on my understanding Aperture was prefered by those that wanted the organizational power of Aperture. Lightroom was prefered by those that needed the photo editing capabilites of Lightroom. This moves Apperture closer and may bring some lightroom users to Aperture.

Great news in my book.

anyone try the upgrade compatability check on a V1 acedemic version?

I would like to know this as well. Sometime, (as with Final Cut Studio) Apple looks the other way on acedemic upgrades simply to broaden their upgradeable user base.
If anyone gets confirmation that an academic serial number is eligible please post!

Is anyone else not really impressed with the new features? I only played with it for about 15 minutes, but in that time the only "new" thing I found was repair. Everything else just seems like they just moved it around, Also, why they hell did they make tabs for the adjustments, metadata, and library? That was one of the big things I hate about LightRoom. Having to switch between modes. Yes it's faster, but if you work in a non-linear fashion, it sucks. Anyone know if you go back to the old way?

Imported some RAW .cr2 images from a Canon 350D (8 MP).

Feels a snappier on my PB G4 (1.67 GHz, Jan 05). Less system lag, makes me want to switch back to Aperture (I currently use Lightroom because of performance). Straightening an image is now smooth (although applying adjustments after straightening is still laggy). The preview mode feature also helps. It would probably run perfectly on a MBP. :D

I did the Aperture Checker on my computer before installing the Trial version (bored while waiting) and it said that I was able to get Aperture 2. I am not 100% sure but I am PRETTY sure I have the Academic of Aperture 1.5

Hrmm...anybody know how this will work...

I just purchased the academic version of Aperture 1.5. I haven't opened it yet as I am going to be receiving my new Mac Pro today. Will I be eligible for the upgrade ($10)? Or will I need to return it and buy the full-version (an additional $50)?

It appears that there is no longer an academic version, only the full $200 version.

Hickman

it took 'em a bit to get it up (academic version) and I had to go to the left side menu bar>>Mac software >> Just added >> Aperature Academic $179

Does anyone know how this would fly on a 2Ghz CD Macbook with a 24" monitor attached???? I know it says it can run on the Macbook, but would the extra screen space be too many pixels for my poor Macbooks little GMA950 to push????

Hear hear. I honestly don't believe if this is the case it will remain the case. I can easily see Apple purposely dragging their butts as far as getting an update to Aperture 1.5 that reads the new formats- compounded by their usual policy of stone silence - with the sole intention of herding people into paying the $99. Most people would upgrade regardless, but you're absolutely 100% correct that this would be completely sleazy for a company like Apple.

I'll wait and read up. I was an Aperture fan.. tried Lightroom and there was no contest- LR had better retouching tools and ran better. I did prefer Aperture's file management but not enough to stay. In Aperture both the photo's and the database can be stored in one container which acts as a file, as opposed to LR where the DB file is separate from imported image files. The result is files end up all over the place with LR if you don't manage them. No biggie in the grand scheme.

So it should be fun to see what Aperture 2.0 has to offer. Switching back would be a royal pain in the butt- so it's pretty unlikely I'll upgrade unless there's something I can't live without in A2.0, but never the less it's great that Apple is moving forward, albeit somewhat obnoxiously.

I will say this much... on the Mac Pro (early 2008 2.8) Aperture 1.5 is very responsive compared to my G5 2.0, even with just the 2600 card. I daresay it's even more snappy than LR on the new machine. LR seems to be taking more time to render previews, i.e. click an image and see pixelly looking preview for about 3 sec with the "hold on, I'm working on it" message. I haven't had a chance to really play with either yet on the new machine other than just getting them up and registered etc.

I'll post my long winded thoughts on 2.0 when I get my hands on the demo.

All the little checker does is to confirm that your machine has the hardware requirements to run Aperture. It does not check the number.

I don't even have the updated software yet but I have a bug fix!

Run software update and you will find the ever amusing iLife Support update. It states that it contains important bug fixes for Aperture 2.

What's sad is having to pay to gain support for cameras that have been out for months.

I probably would have updated, but this tactical delay by marketing to gain some extras sales has has a different effect. I am not going to look into lightroom! How is that Steve?

[sarcasm]but where is my MBP?:D[/sarcasm]

thanks for the enlightening message:rolleyes:

[/jokingly]Since there are some of us that have benn waiting longer for the PG G5, then I expect you will have to wait until the PB G5 comes out. A bit of a queue.[/jokingly]

New features video

Very very cool. Just watched the "What's new" video on the Aperture site. I love that the project viewer is available in full-screen mode. Oh, and the ability to browse projects from thumbnails is just brilliant. Definitely want.

Try this:

That was the first thing I tried after SharkySharky replied.

The good news is that it seems to have fixed itself! Not sure when - I've just been doing some work in 1.5.2 ...but it's fixed. :D

I have to admit, using 1.5.2 after having played with 2.0, there didn't seem like much difference.

To be honest, the new usable straighten tool may be enough to warrant the upgrade!
