sigh... It's sad to read this. Only at Apple will new features be implemented in consumer products before the pro-line. A full year even!!

Not to mention that Faces sounds rather pointless to me for Aperture. Hardly something the pro users have been pining for. :(

Oh well.. atleast it's 64-bit.

The updated version includes the Faces and Places tagging features introduced in iPhoto last year...

Upgrade Question

I purchased a copy of Aperture 2 (a month ago today) and had a few questions regarding the upgrade.

Q: Do they offer any "special pricing" for those that recently purchased the software?

Q: If they don't offer the above, will the upgrade to A3 require that A2 be installed, or will it just request the install disc for A2 (or is there another method to verify)? The only reason I ask is I prefer to install a clean copy (it's probably the Windows user in me)

Thank You in advance

-Chris

Does anyone know if the documentation is available online yet? I like to see details--not just bullet points and a few video clips. Is the user manual anywhere I can download it?

Thats because aperture doesn't handle the RAW processing, OSX does. Apple is very very slow in updating the RAW support and still leaves out a lot of cameras. I'm happy with it, only because my D70s is supported, I can see why people are frustrated by it.

Frequent updates was one reason why I went over to LR over aperture. Adobe has a better track record of updating LR, in contrast to apple with Aperture and RAW

Adobe has a better record? Actually, Lightroom is only optimized for 64bit for Windows. Regarding RAW support though, A3 supports more than 150 cameras & backs. Frequent updates for mac folks is not really as accurate for us mac folks...

These are the A3 RAW supported cameras...

Surprised this wasn't mentioned... Aperture now has Curves adjustments, and they can show the extended RAW image info.

And 200 other new features. Still reading through it, but I'm impressed:

http://www.apple.com/aperture/features/

I do love this, FINALLY! Maybe I won't need PS as much.

I suspect the people complaining aren't really pros. They're people who use pro software or pretend to use pro software so they can feel superior to others, and addition of consumer level features makes them feel uncomfortable. Or, at least gives them a reason to shout about how upset they are at consumer level features making it into their pro software.

It seems a real professional would welcome new advanced organizational tools, which Faces is. I'd bet plenty of real Aperture users had been pestering Apple to add the feature.

+1, it's just snobbery.

I'm an amateur photographer who likes the idea of Aperture for my serious work, but I also like some of the features that iPhoto gives me, including Faces. In fact, I'm even unashamed to say that I use the MobileMe/Facebook/Flickr integration - does anyone know if that's been carried over to Aperture?

Is it not possible to be a good photographer and still get some fun out of the hobby? It's like those "pro" photographers who have lost the ability to take family holiday snaps because every picture they take has got to be beautifully composed and technically perfectl.

Faces

wow sounds like picasa, and I didn't have to pay $200 for RAW support. What shall I do

Running at 64 bit is good news too, has Adobe bothered to do this for the mac yet? (trick question, of COURSE they have not). Adobe has turned their backs on the community they built their business on, so it is far easier to turn our backs on them as well. Just like the plodding upgrade for Intel, they are doing the same for 64bit. See their statement explaining why on PCs get 64bit...

Yes, they have. Lightroom is a 64-Bit app on OS X -- and this is your point of reference. Aperture and Photoshop are not in the same league, but Aperture and Lightroom are. And since Apple - and nobody else - has no substitute for Photoshop for OS X, you just have to suck up the fact that Photoshop is still a 32-Bit app on the Mac.

On paper, these improvements are GREAT! Can't wait! Sure, face and places aren't new, but the "unadvertised" improvements are amazing!

I'm super hyped about the chromatic aberration filter and the brushes, and the curves are just great. Less leaving the Aperture environment for me!

Oh and have you guys even READ the damn New Features page? Or are you writing your "silly faces, pros don't use that feature!" replies based off the article here on MacRumors? There are a TON of new features that "pros" have been asking for!

I find it interesting that Apple needs to take down its web store at all for product updates. What, is everything a static HTML page? Does Amazon go down for two hours every time a new product is added?

Another +1 here. I'm an amateur here and of course that means I take a lot of photos of friends and family -- I just try to make them, you know, a little better than the average snapshot. At $200 Aperture is certainly priced as an amateur-accessible product.

Photography in general though has a very weird relationship between pros and amateurs, with people spending $2000 on a camera, $4000 on lenses to take pictures as a hobby and then obsessively worrying that they aren't "professional" enough.

Absolutely agree. I have a wide selection of programs I use in my photo workflow and love the idea of these "fun" features coming to Aperture. Bear in mind there's some also steps up with the features - e.g: full control over title positioning in slideshows, journey tracking in places and so on.

I think the whiners are the same people who think that being good at Flash = speaking in actionscript.

Mobile Me, Facebook, and Flickr are indeed in Aperture 3.

If you're using Aperture you shouldn't have a need for Faces :-(

Perhaps I'm the only one, but I see little to no desire for faces. Its a feature that seems lame especially for the professional or serious amateur.

The increased editing capability is a welcome site and so with the presets.

I switched over to LightRoom and I've been happy with that, however I do miss the integration that apple has with its apps. I can easily include images on my iPhone, rapidweaver and other apps. LR does not have this and requires extra steps. While I was willing to live with the extra steps, because of the increased editing, this does potentially level the playing field (and yes I know LR is getting ready to be updated)

I tried downloading the trial but it wouldn't let me, I suppose I'm jumping the gun a bit

I think faces is great... I can't see why a pro WOULDN'T want to have the option. Same with Places. It's an organizational tool, which is paramount when you take a lot of photos.

Anyways, stupid iPhoto-user question: does Aperture include any sort of camera control modes? I'm thinking like the Capture NX software from Nikon which lets you plug in a Nikon dSLR and use the computer to control the shutter release, etc.

You're entirely correct. Half the people who whine in these threads are mac newbies with bottom-spec mahines who have "bought in" to a percieved image they have of Apple and whine when whatever release comes out doesn't match whatever standard they desire. Apparently adding a roll-eyes icon to it gives them the air of cool authority to go with it. Look at the cretin in here who sold his MB so he could buy a new one when there was no proof one was due!

There's nothing wrong with adding these features to Aperture which is a pretty solid program and one I use a tremendous amount. It's also very reasonably priced I feel, always has been, for features vs cost.

Anyone else noticed that Aperture 3 requires an "Intel-based Mac computer"? No support for G4/G5 processors this time.

I think this should have been assumed. A lot of new Apple software doesn't support PPC anymore.

I doubt it will have much impact on LR. In my mind, the big play here that is not happening by either of them is something that integrates the library into a home/small office environment.

I agree, allowing someone on a second computer to access the same library, at the same time, and still retain coherency would be very helpful.

Perhaps I'm the only one, but I see little to no desire for faces. Its a feature that seems lame especially for the professional or serious amateur.

I think you just don't have any use for time-saving features. You can't imagine using the power of a computer to do a quick first-pass recognition of people? Even if you have a thousand photos of multiple events? It's potentially a powerful tool, I suggest not turning up your nose at it because it was featured in a consumer product first.

In my opinion, people that are truly professional, or truly serious about photography wouldn't snob against organizational tools like that.

Anybody got the trial yet ? Submitted my email but haven't received an email yet.

Same here.

I'm really excited about this, just bought a pentax k-7 (even though it appears to not be supported) and really want to try it out.

Still waiting for adobe to allow installation on case sensitive file systems, manually editing files is too much of a pain to bother doing it again for CS4.

A few questions:

1) Does anyone (a beta tester?) know if it has iPhoto-esque effects like Edge Blur, etc. built into it? That is something that Ap 2 has been missing.

2) What about the ability to add text to a photo? Does anyone know if it is available?

I've looked in the new features and can't find anything. Either it doesn't offer these things or they didn't think them worthy enough to include in the promo material.

I find it interesting that Apple needs to take down its web store at all for product updates. What, is everything a static HTML page? Does Amazon go down for two hours every time a new product is added?

Not even comparable. Aperture is an BTO option on all the Macs - which is the primary focus of the online store. Lots of SKU's to update so they take the whole thing down for a short period to update everything.

Amazon's store is a different beast and is designed differently. Mostly since Amazon doesn't really have product's that they sell under their branding like Apple does. Not to mention Amazons's scope and scale are much larger than anything Apple does by design. Amazon never updates products like Apple does.

kludgy destructive plug-in approach???

Its a knock because prior to version 3, aperture did not have the depth and breadth of non-destructive editing that LightRoom had. They had to with the kludgy destructive plug-in approach. Now in version 3 they have enhanced non-destructive editing.

I have no idea what you are talking about, and suspect you have no idea how to work with Aperture. At any time you can view the intact Master file with one keystroke, furthermore you can make additional copies with a click (if you wish to pursue different imaging results).

Aperture MOSTLY replaces BOTH Photoshop and Lightroom for me, at least for strictly imaging work. Pshop is $699 these days, and Lightroom is priced at a strangely familiar price of $299.

PS: furthermore, EACH Aperture edit can be toggled on/off at any point (excepting those done in third-party programs like NIK, for obvious reasons).

Does anyone know if lightroom can add videos like AP3? This seems like an awsome addition I would love to use in AP3. I make slideshows for my church and like to intergrate video and pics together. I used only finalcut express which was good but AP3 seems to do the same but in an easier way.

Apple's usual upgrade implementation asks for your new key, and then for the old one you upgraded from. You shouldn't need anything from Aperture 2, as their installers are self-contained full programs.

You'll find a selection to purchase an upgrade from its Apple Store page, on the right. It changes the price to $99. Make sure you have your old serial.
