Anyone know if the new version is going to be available at retail Apple stores today? I'd rather go buy in person because I can fake that I'm still a college student and get a discount ;)

DNG files must be generated by the Adobe DNG Converter with the “Convert to Linear Image” option turned off.
I think this means I can't use DxO generated DNG files in Aperture 3.

If so, Epic Fail!

Too little, too late. Im enjoying LR.

I initially enjoyed Aperture when I demo'd, but the lack of serious updates swayed me to stick with LR. I am happy I did.

I started out using Aperture 2, but the lack of nondestructive local edits ("Brushes" as Apple is calling it) absolutely killed me, so I switched to LR2, which has always had local nondestructive edits. LR2's interface is clunkier than Aperture, but I needed functionality over ease of use.

Unfortunately for Apple, Aperture 3 is too little too late. I already have a huge library in LR2 and won't be switching over to Aperture. I'll just wait for LR3, which is going to be released very soon.
Note that you'll still have to convert your Lr 2 library to Lr 3.

If you're using Aperture you shouldn't have a need for Faces :-(

Wrong.

Not more than 45 minutes ago my boss asked me "Do you have a photo of (lawyer x) with our CEO?"

Now, I tag what I can, but I don't have every single person in my database labled, you know? I've got 6 years of corprate events in my computer, it's not like I remember all the events this lawyer came to. It sure would be nice to have a chance for the computer to help me out with that search.

So please give me a break. I hate the f***'n "that's not professional" attitude. Guess what, if it's a tool and I can find a use for it at work, it's professional!

You forgot to mention Core 2 Duo (i.e. 64bit-only).

It doesn't actually say that. This is under the Recommended section : "Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor". Any of the listed Intel Macs, including those with CoreDuo (32-bit) CPUs will run it. It will only run in 64-bit mode in 64-bit Macs (obviously).

Please check your facts before posting.

Just tried to call the Apple store on Regent Street here in London but gave up after 15 minutes. I'm hoping they do, and if so I will pick up a copy today!! :D

I stand corrected on the 64bit... but....

Yes, they have. Lightroom is a 64-Bit app on OS X -- and this is your point of reference. Aperture and Photoshop are not in the same league, but Aperture and Lightroom are. And since Apple - and nobody else - has no substitute for Photoshop for OS X, you just have to suck up the fact that Photoshop is still a 32-Bit app on the Mac.

With the exception of layering, and type... Aperture is indeed in the same league as pshop, and in many ways the far superior beast. I use Aperture professionally and work on tens of thousands of images each year. Aperture2 blows the doors off photoshop in many ways, and is FAR easier to learn and actually start being productive than photoshop. For over a year now 90% of all of my imaging takes place within Aperture, and I can get better results in a lot faster time frame. Batch editing can be done with a few clicks. Extensibility and integration with Nikon's NIK suite has sealed the deal (which pshop also has).

Photoshop has experienced a frightening feature bloat, and an even more frightening cost bloat as well. With each new iteration the number of usable improvements is usually slight (and I have been a LONG time user, and have used pshop since the 1.0 version).

A few questions:

1) Does anyone (a beta tester?) know if it has iPhoto-esque effects like Edge Blur, etc. built into it? That is something that Ap 2 has been missing.

2) What about the ability to add text to a photo? Does anyone know if it is available?

I've looked in the new features and can't find anything. Either it doesn't offer these things or they didn't think them worthy enough to include in the promo material.

Check out Nikon's NIK suite of plug-ins. Amazing, amazing stuff! I use them every day...

Text and layers (and CMYK conversion) are the ONLY things I do in pshop anymore. Pshop is the best tool for those things still...

You forgot to mention Core 2 Duo (i.e. 64bit-only).

The minimum is an Intel proc. The recommended is a Core 2 Duo. Also, C2D's are not 64-bit only and Aperture 3 is not 64-bit only either.

What is considered a huge library? Our family does point and shoot and have about 5k - 6k photos. Is this considered large or would Aperture even help me? It's currently managed using iPhoto 09 which seems to lag a bit.

You can do it online and still get the college discount...you just need to know the zip code of a university...try 16802 :)

Potential Photoshop Option?

Having never used Aperture... do those that have foresee a time when apple might position Aperture as a Photoshop option/replacement?

sigh... It's sad to read this. Only at Apple will new features be implemented in consumer products before the pro-line. A full year even!!

Not to mention that Faces sounds rather pointless to me for Aperture. Hardly something the pro users have been pining for. :(

Oh well.. atleast it's 64-bit.

You seem to be the perfect troll. Basically you are complaining about Apple not introducing a feature that you didn't care about. LOL

I think faces is great... I can't see why a pro WOULDN'T want to have the option. Same with Places. It's an organizational tool, which is paramount when you take a lot of photos.

Anyways, stupid iPhone-user question: does Aperture include any sort of camera control modes? I'm thinking like the Capture NX software from Nikon which lets you plug in a Nikon dSLR and use the computer to control the shutter release, etc.

Kinda, http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/ says you can use a tethered Nikon or canon. That's actually in version 2 aswell I believe. I've never used this feature of aperture always used the Nikon software.

Shut the eff up because I have an Intel MBP with a Core Duo processor and I am going to use Aperture 3!

About f&$@k time!

As digital files get bigger, Aperture 2 can't keep up. Ive been waiting for this update for too long

No - the software focus if different from Photoshop. The closest comparison to Aperture from Adobe is Lightroom. Photoshop is in a league of it's own and is intended to do different things. Aperture is Photo post production - not high end editing and creation.
