Apple Releases Boot Camp Beta

Unbelievable! But what a day for me! No more will I ever have to listen to people tell me they would LOVE a Mac, but they have software that only works on Windows.

Kiss the last excuse goodbye, and leave the dark side!

This may have been posted but I didn't want to read all 10 pages. I found it funny that in the screen shots on the Boot Camp page, the OSX logo is all colorful while the windows logo is bland black and white.

This is certainly cool, but can't think of a single instance that I needed to run Windows since switching. This is the sort of thing I'd like to have just to say I had it, but I'd never utilize it.

hahahah all those people searching forever for a way to install windows and all those countless hours gone to waste by Apple doing it themselves

Countless hours goen to waste? The dude won 13,000$. I think if he could, he would have done it all over again :)

Sweet! Now I can buy one of the IBooks coming out. I have two applications that I have to use that require windows. Now I don't have to worry about it. I can simply use windows for these programs and then toggle over for everything else.

This is great for individuals in the financial industry where all software is PC windows based.

Will you be able to run this inside a window or do you have to reboot?! it would be amazing if things like drag and drop worked between os's.

Just think about all the new games you can run now.

hrrmmm how is this solution for dual booting between OS X and Linux?

Well, Linux already works on Intel-Macs, so I don't think they need any additional hand-holding. Windows is the one that needs it :).

It costs money to develop for OSX and 95% of the world still runs Windows.

This is true, but it was true before the switch to Intel and the news release of Boot Camp. I think that software makers like Adobe, Quark, and even Microsoft (Office) will continue to make software OS X native as long as there are customers who demand it. If there is a market, someone will provide a solution. I for one know that I'm not switching back to Windows anytime soon, but it will be nice for me at work to have the option to use some Windows-specific software that currently necessitates an entire extra desktop that's taking up space.

The 5% market share burden has been with us for some time, and I don't think the share will go down because of this news. Vote with your wallets, and buy OS X native software.

dang i hate this now. my dual g5 2ghz i bought for $1449 + $450 for Dell 2005FPW stinks!

Would have been better now buying intel imac refurb for $1449 and putting windows on it as well so i can game.

For the moment you have to reboot.

As for the implementation within Leopard, who knows?

Welcome to the first mac-hine that can run all the major OS's in the world (at native speed).

Mac OS- the best graphical OS in the world- which is built on...
*nix - the most important OS in science and research
Windows - the most widely used OS in the world.

/waits for the first virus to infect Windows XP on a Mac, and spread into OSX

Aint gonna happen.

First of all, Mac partitions are formatted with HFS. Windows can't read HFS, therefore, it can't read or write to ANY of your OSX data. Even if it could write to it, a virus is a Windows executable, and Windows executables won't run in OSX (which we should all know by now....that's the entire reason for booting XP on a Mac). The Windows partition can get filled to capacity with spyware and viruses. OSX will still be 100% clean.

This is scary part of the Apple Boot Camp page (why does nobody seem to care about this??):

Uh, because we already know that Windows is infested with viruses and spyware? Or did you think that Windows becomes magically immune to those security-threats if it's running on a Mac?

Conincidence?

The more I think about it and the more I am concerned.
A few days ago Apple announced the departure of the top OSX architect.
Can it be a due to "difference of opinions" on the death of the mac platform?

It's not that people don't care. It's a risk, but it's a calculated risk, and one lessened by the fact that XP is on its own partition.

If people start using this technology on their Macs, and it becomes quite widespread, why bother writing software for Macs?

Because mac users will always buy the mac version if it is available. And if YOUR app doesn't run on OSX, if there is a competing app that does run on OSX, mac users will buy it instead of yours. People don't seem to understand that.

This is big big news, and has come as quite a shock to myself...I think this is good for apple in terms of market share....but in contrast they are becoming something I never thought I would see and its a bit sad to see there ability to solely run OS X lost....I STILL LOVE PPC and I wish apple would hold on:eek:

I don't sense the sarcasm you *might* be trying to convey. I think that's a pretty sweet computer, no matter what patch was released today. If you think it stinks, I'll be happy to take it off of your hands for pennies on the dollar ;) .

the WEAK:
1. It's not a virtual machine. There are some caveats (don't pick the wrong drive or Windows will reformat your Mac!!

I don't think Windows even knows the Mac-partitions are there. my W2K has no idea that there are ext3-partitions with Linux in 'em in the machine, so there is no way I could erase them.

3. It's still Windows, so now I have to worry about Virus Patches, SpyWare, and all that other junk. Just the thought of that junk on my MBP hard drive gives me the willies.....

Windows would be at risk, just like it's today. But OS X is not.

Yeah thats all APple's fault.

Give me a break

yet another reason for mac users to get excited about windows! :) /sarcasm

ok, if you need windows fine, but please, please, stop bashing it, because guess what, if your excited about this and you install XP then you are *drum roll please* A Windows Users!

So no more comments about stupid windows users since apparently you all don't mind it that much.
