Gotta say that my first action was to go and buy a bunch of AAPL shares. It's up over 3 bucks from yesterday's close but this is nowhere near where it's going to be. This will be a huge incentive, not for the incipient switchers but also for the already converted. I have a year old 12" PB and an older iMac but now I'll probably replace both of them. Apple's sales are going to make a huge jump, along with profit.

And to put things in perspective...

The latest types of malware are so potent that organisations should forget about trying to cleanse infected systems, a top Microsoft security officer has advised. Mike Danseglio, a program manager in Microsoft's security group, said firms should think about establishing a process for backup and recovering rather than relying on anti-virus tools as a way of recovering from malware infection.
When you are dealing with rootkits and some advanced spyware programs, the only solution is to rebuild from scratch. In some cases, there really is no way to recover without nuking the systems from orbit," Mike Danseglio, a program manager in Microsoft's security group, told a security conference in Florida

One ugly thought, if a Windows Virus rewrites the master partition table on the hard drive, it could toast the OSX partition as well.

Yuck, Yikes, I still hate Windows!

the master partition-table could be accessible to just OS X. The virus could hose the Windows-install, but it could not harm OS X.

Aint gonna happen.

First of all, Mac partitions are formatted with HFS. Windows can't read HFS, therefore, it can't read or write to ANY of your OSX data. Even if it could write to it, a virus is a Windows executable, and Windows executables won't run in OSX (which we should all know by now....that's the entire reason for booting XP on a Mac). The Windows partition can get filled to capacity with spyware and viruses. OSX will still be 100% clean.

There's still danger: A virus in Win XP should be able to format your Mac Partition.

[update] I am not fast enough.

It does raise an interesting issue though. If people start using this technology on their Macs, and it becomes quite widespread, why bother writing software for Macs? Could it lead to the death of the Mac software industry and ultimately of OS X?

Remember that the PPC Macs, which probably account for 98% of the Macs in existance, still can't run Windows without the ever crappy Virtual PC

Only if you regularly use Windows with an administrator account. And if you use an admin account constantly on Windows, well, you probably deserve it )

It's easy not to get a virus on Windows XP . . . don't surf the web!!! Use Mac OSX for that. I mean seriously, people only get viruses because they are stupid enough to click on stuff like "Win a Free iPod!" and email concerning cute little stories and chain letters. Am I wrong?

I know that when I get my Intel iMac next week, I will be installing Windows XP Pro, SP1 because I don't want SP2 hogging the system resources. All this anti-virus/spyware/firewall BS that Windows has really bogs the system down. Back when I had my gaming rig, I had a list of background performances I needed to shut off in order to get the most out of my system instead of overclocking it.

Will somebody please take a pic of an iMac with a BSOD, if it ever happens?

I actually wanna see how games perform, maybe some Counter Strike Source? That's the only PC game I have left from selling my PC!!!

Can't believe what I'm reading.

I'm in shock over the number of Mac users who are cheering this move. People, this is the end of the Mac. An OS cannot exist without developers. Apple has overnight killed OS X...perhaps intentionally.

The arguments for dual booting are weak. Mac users have survived and often thrived for years without the ability to boot Windows. Apple itself staved off death and reemerged stronger than ever without the help of Windows.

First they sold out the iPod and music store, then they sold out the PowerPC...what the hell do you people think is next? I'll tell you. They're selling out OS X!

Vista will ship on Apple hardware. You wait and see. All the developers, websites, and communities you supported and took part in will vanish.

Some 30th anniversary gift!

It's about the games!

I need money. About two grand to be exact. I don't care where it comes from, but i'm willing to stick my hand out and accept anything that comes my way.

It's not like SJ to miss "the moment". This should have been released April 1st. It would have been prime time news. It's all about the games though. Hopefully the next MBP will have a better GPU. Oblivion is liquid mainline crack right now.

Not all Macintosh users are as closed minded as you seem to think. Please explain how the Macintosh hardware is inferior to say, Dell, HP, IBM, WinBook, whenever you get a chance.

I think that's unfair....

When I read the press release I laughed when I read "superior hardware". PC users get to pick and choose their components, at least where desktop machines are concerned.

It's ALL good

os/2

remember that and what killed it?

Why on earth is anyone going to bother porting an app to OSX  .

Perhaps Dvorak can see into Steve's brain.

Am I the only one thinking "who cares"? If developers write apps only for Windows, I'll run Windows on my Mac to use them, if the app is better than what is available on my Mac. But the reality for me (and a large percentage of Mac users) is that we mostly don't need any software on our Macs, other than that provided by Apple. Safari, Mail, Xcode and iLife constitute the vast majority of software use on my Mac. When necessary, I run OpenOffice to read/produce Office docs, and I don't see Unix-based Open Source software disappearing from the Mac any time soon.

I really could not care less if games developpers, only write for the PC platform. That's mostly the case anyway, so the impact on me is really going to be minimal. I already play games for the PC in Virtual PC (I like adventure games, and those from several years ago are quite playable on VPC).

BUT, with the dual-boot option, I can finally get software products for my Mac that Apple itself doesn't support. Woohoo!

How, exactly? Windows propably has ZERO clue about the system outside it's little corner on the machine. It has no idea that there is OS X-system outside it's FAT/NTFS-partitions. How exactly could it or some virus erase OS X?

Technically... yes. This could be what Dvorak was talking about. It does scare me a little bit but hopefully Apple just wants to attract would-be Mac users to increase their market share. However, if Apple does end up like Dvorak predicted... I swear I will get angry.
I can't possibly understand why people would want the Mac more if it ran only Windows. If it dual booted, fair enough, but not ditching OS X in favour of Windows exclusively. If that were the case, people would be buying the machines almost exclusively on looks and when people looked at the specs and saw something that looked uglier, maybe had one or two minor bits missing, same tech specs but $500 less, I think looks would become less relavent. Then Apple's market share would dip and it would have proven to have been counter-productive.

Still doesn't make sense.

How about file sharing between the two partitions?
Will this possible, and if yes, will this be a gateway for viruses?

Weehaa, happy 30th birthday Apple !!
(a few days late, though)

...Edit 2: What would this mean for software? I can see Microsoft saying if you want Word, install Windows on your Mac

Looks like Apple will just have to push their much better alternative IMO to Word, Pages, much harder.

While their at it, just push Keynote as the PowerPointless replacement and iWork which is only half the cost of miCrapsoft Office's lowest priced student/teacher edition [$149].

We jut need an Excel killer application [the easiest of the bunch] from Apple to nuke Office altogether, once and for all.

Yeah with this setup, nuking it is as easy as just deleting the partition.

I really like the idea. Cause a lot of people just plain need Windows for school, college, thier buisness. Plus if this increases Apple's market share, I don't think developers will stop developing for Mac but rather develop more due to increased share.

I would also think viruses would be minimized because instead of doing everything under XP you would merely doing stuff like Games, Work, and Coding. None of these items involve downloading or web surfing the two most prolific ways to gain viruses. If you do all the "dangerous" items with OS X, then there should be no problem with viruses.

Plus, this might make Apple hardware cheaper, I mean increased market share should hopefully bring down the price, which will be much welcomed by all.

All I hope is that reboot will be just as fast under Windows as Mac cause otherwise this will become slitghly tedious.

But, I envision my system right now.

15" MBP 2.16 Ghz, 100 GB, 2 GB Ram.
5GB Partition: FAT 32 : Windows Files
5GB Partition: FAT 32 : Windows System Files
5GB Partition: EFS? : Linux Files and System
85GB Partition: ????? : Mac OS X and Files

That would be a sweet setup. It would probably be the best portable set up for years to come. Ohh did I mention I will be running Conroe, not Core Duo crap and I'll have an 8 hours battery. :D

Boot Camp only works with SP2. Sorry.

Oh, the conspiracy theories

The only thing this is the end of is the need to have 2 computers.

I'm wondering that myself now.

Probably nothing. Boot Camp probably just won't be installed.

I like the snide comments on the Apple site, by the way.

Someone really should save those to a mirror before they get erased. They are classic Jobs jabs.

The recent posting of the Nextstep DR3 promo video on Mac News Bytes was also repleat with (ant-Mac) Jobs jabs gems.

I think I'll buy a Mac mini for several of my rabid Wintel-PC friends :)
