Mac User Worried

I am a mac faithful but this new software just confirms something I felt when front row came out. I think it's wrong of apple to support a new platform and forget about PPC entirely, we also deserve an alternative to VPC, as we deserve frontrow. I can understand the reasons why boot camp was not released for PPC, due to the differences (intel vs ppc) but why leave us without front row??? We know it "can" run on PPC but apple has felt it necessary to keep us out of the loop just to make PB and ibooks flourish in ebay, and make us go for $3000 laptops.

I hope that apple come leopard time makes some changes to this trend.

Well, I don't see BSOD's nor do I see spontaneous reboots, and I administer about 40 machines here. Am I doing something wrong?

Note: I still think that Windows is crap.

The default setting is that the computer resets itself instead of showing the BSOD :p

1. Apple switches to Intel CPUs
2. Apple allows dual-booting instead of adding some kind of "Virtual PC" to Jaguar
3. Microsoft delays Vista... yet again
4. There's talks about cross-platform Vista/Jaguar development tools/APIs/etc

5. ...

6. There's no "Apple Mac OS X Jaguar" and no "Microsoft Windows Vista" coming, folks. There's a new Apple-Microsoft product called "Windows Jaguar" coming, though.

Yes - in an effort to kill Linux, Bill has signed a deal with Steve: Windows Jaguar will be Mac OS X in disguise and will run old Windows apps in Virtual PC (which they already own).

So yes, say good-bye to Mac OS X, in name. But also say good-bye to Windows for real, because only the name will be left.

Note: what you have read may or may not be facts and/or reality. But it's all technically possible. Read it with a 1Kg grain of salt.

dont you mean leopard

I don't give a damn if they include bootcamp(or whatever) with the next upgrade....as long as windows don't jack up my laptop/desktop then i'm fine...don't really care about the biz end as long as i dont get screwed.

Bless

Jaguar is not Leopard

The upcoming version of OS X is codename Leopard not Jaguar. Good try though.

This will make my job at CompUSA of selling Macs so much easier now. yesterday alone 3 customers shot down my Mac suggestion due to the fact that they needed to run Windows software, one guy in particular noting his business software.

However, this still isn't for everyone. For those that don't have it, not many are going to be keen to drop $200+ on a Windows XP CD anytime soon

Not always

if they were all smarter, how come they only have 5% market share?

Apple has only got 5% market share because of one bad decision years ago, made by people who don't work there anymore.

Also Ferrari don't have a 5% market share and I'm sure there are some smart people working there.

Now why should people support the Mac platform???

I think this might be a bad thing. It's already hard to get certain websites, software developers, IT departments, etc. to support the Mac platform. Now they have no reason to support us at all. They can just say, "Install Windows on your Mac!"

This is great - now when Apple finally releases an Intel Power Mac system I can replace my dual G4. With a good video card I can play my aircraft shootem up - Il2 Sturmovik. A game that would probably never have been ported for OSX. Also I have some Cisco material that will only run on Windows.

In my opinion the recent contest to get Windows running on an Apple triggered an earlier release of Boot Camp by Apple.

Well said. Apple & that recent contest is giving all switchers & Mac faithful that live in a Windows controlled computing world more OPTIONS, a better alternative.

Many companies like BNSF run an Microsft Virtual Machine Emulator that Sun Microsystems Java (the world standard) doesnt run on. Man other companies employees are so fustrated with Windows, yet can blow corners around in MainFrame (remember IBM), that a transition to Mac OS X would be so smooth, they could ween themselves off of Windows.

If you dont want it then fine. If you do then this saves you spending extra for "just as capable hardware platform" to do the things you need to do in Windows.

Yeah, that makes perfect sense. Developers will stop writing for OSX at the same time mac market share is on the rise. I doubt any are that stupid.

Really? I am glad you said "Mac market share", not "OS X market share"...Mac MACHINES will sell like hotcakes...but I am not so sure about PROSPECTIVE Mac software...

I don't wanna repeat myself...but my assumptions are: (1) IF Apple officially (as with BootCamp) makes it easy for people to install Winblows; AND (2) we consider software that is NOT YET ported to the Mac = RESULT: no prospective software developers (like for Autocad and games) will make an effort to creat native OS X versions.

I am still waiting for reasonable counter-arguments to my theory here...

That IS pretty salty. :D :p

I have said before that for me the rhetorical question is "Why?"
BUT new information has come to light and I will be looking at this as a solution.
We are building a new school, and one of the departments wanted a PC lab because of some specialized software they wanted to run. I run Open Directory and didn't want to go through the hassle of linking the PC's to it... NOW I don't have a thing to worry about. Boot PC to do the stupid PC stuff, boot Mac to do the cool stuff.
Simple as that.

I said it before but I'll say it again:

I predict that Apple is moving to a Windows-BASED solution. That is, NeXTstep will be ported to Windows, so Macs will still operate, look, and feel as they always have, but instead of being built on Unix, the OS will be built on Windows. In the future, Macs will NOT ship with Vista, as far as the user is concerned. It'll be there, but behind the scenes, just like Unix is today. All of Apple's applications, like iLife, will operate as they do today.

Because it will still operate just like a Mac today, plus the ability to run Windows apps without virtualization or dual booting, I don't have a problem with it. Except for one thing: viruses and security holes.

Very very bad idea

Well, Apple has just ensured that CS3 and Office do not get ported to x86 OSX at all. Why spend the money? Just release an XP version that the whole world can use. Very bad news indeed.

Having Leopard have the ability to run Windows natively is a huge blow to Microsoft -just wait and see. After all, what would you rather use? Vista, a crappy version of a 2-year old OS (i.e. Tiger) or Leopard, a superior OS, which lets you run Windows as well?

Acually, I don't think this is a blow to microsoft. If they are still selling a copy of XP / Vista, they are still making money. Plus, it will be a retail copy, so even more profit.

Now, if Leopard can "vitualize" windows without having to buy a copy... well, that would be bad for MS. However, I think MS is too important to Apple for them to do that.

Installed XP on my MacBook Pro just now. It works fine, and I installed the mac specific drivers. Pretty painless if you ask me. I'll be installing more software later when I get a chance to try out the speed of games and such.
ncoffey, why does your sig say: "Mac Mini 1.25GHz, iPod Nano 4GB, MacBook Pro 1.67GHz"?

There is no such thing as a MacBook Pro 1.67GHz. ;)

Trust me very few people drop any money for a XP CD.
I have three Windows computer but magically have 14 XP CDs sitting around. Its so easy to get them from a place of buisness that MS would probably make more money tighetening their supply chain than making an Apple customized version.

The last time I have used a legitimate XP software was when I booted my DELL for the first time with Home edition. The next day I put on Professional. Its really just too easy.

Yes!

This looks so cool! I'm happy Apple finally got into the Windows on Mac business. This should be very cool, I'll have to finish installing this when I get home...damn school! haha :D

cant wait until these start appearing

How hard it is to not run .exe that you don't trust?

I completely agree. I'm a recent switcher and every time I read one of these posts going on and on about how easy it is to get viruses and spyware on the PC I laugh. Here are some pointers:

I download software constantly for my windows PC from legit and unlegit sites. I always run a good antivirus but I can't remember the last time I got a warning about a virus. I don't think I have gotten a warning this decade. Spyware comes from opening email exe attachments. A good antivirus will catch all this stuff anyway. Even if it did not just don't open attachments you can't trust. As far as blue screen of death, You are no more likely to see one of those on a PC then on a Mac.

Oh yeah, one more pointer. When a web site brings up a popup saying you must install x or the world will end, don't install x.
