I haven't read throught the entire thread yet, but has anyone read the EULA for Boot Camp?
Term of License. The term of this License shall commence upon your installation or use of the Apple Software and will terminate automatically without notice from Apple upon the next commercial release of the Apple Software, or September 30, 2007, whichever occurs first.

Why September 30?

You can't use BootCamp on a PowerPC Mac.

MacTruck has been banned for his stunt... and [DocQ] will be spending the next 30 minutes cleaning this up.

Well, guess what is going to be the next move from Microsoft, which
is after all not completely stupid (should I say dumb ?) ...
They re going to release a version of Windows XP specifically tuned/optimized
for the Apple hardware :) Then they can sell Windows licences to the remaining 5 % of the population which is using Apple.
Starting today, Microsoft doesn t care anymore (if it ever did) about Apple taking market shares. An Apple hardware owner is now as good a customer to sell OS and softwares to, as a Dell or Hp or whatever.

On top of this you can also add that they will layoff the whole "Mac" business unit. We just hired someone from that group and they are all leaving becuase there is no future....

If anyone is criticizing the move, I think you should realise that Apple would have done some serious research in to this and that XP will not kill off OSX, but it should lead to increased market share for Apple.
THis means more APPLE hardware sold = $$$$$
This means more Apple software sold, iLife, iWork, Quicktime, proApps like Final Cut, Aperture etc, = $$$$$$
This also helps lock people into iPod and iTunes =$$$$$.

I don't see anyway this is a loser for Apple.

I'll be 95% OSX, but some of my work Apps are XP only, so that will be the other 5%

Come June, I'll be buying my 20" iMac.

Hey ignore my tagline: I'm now a member!

This is right on target. Apple is making a great move and anyone in this industry would agree.

people don't need windows... i don't care what you say... you don't need it. you're putting an inferior os with a superior one, and making ignorance rise. people go in the store all the time asking questions that boggle my mind. you can do whatever you want on a mac, there are solutions out there, you don't need windows to solve them.... this makes me furious.... damnit apple, why'd you hafta ruin my 30th anniversary party

That is just ignorant of the facts. 1) M$ just signed an agreement with Apple to continue Office for Mac for at least 5 years. 2) Unless Apple really starts eating at Windows market share then M$ NEEDS to keep making Office for Mac for anti-trust reasons. So while current employees may not feel fulfilled there (and I think that feeling is pervasive throughout M$ these days) the MBU isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

1. Apple switches to Intel CPUs
2. Apple allows dual-booting instead of adding some kind of "Virtual PC" to Leopard
3. Microsoft delays Vista... yet again
4. There's talks about cross-platform Vista/Leopard development tools/APIs/etc

5. ...

6. There's no "Apple Mac OS X Leopard" and no "Microsoft Windows Vista" coming, folks. There's a new Apple-Microsoft product called "Windows Leopard" coming, though.

Yes - in an effort to kill Linux, Bill has signed a deal with Steve: Windows Leopard will be Mac OS X in disguise and will run old Windows apps in Virtual PC (which they already own).

So yes, say good-bye to Mac OS X, in name. But also say good-bye to Windows for real, because only the name will be left.

Note: what you have read may or may not be facts and/or reality. But it's all technically possible. Read it with a 1Kg grain of salt.

Edit: thanks xUKHCx

I think this is really close to the target. Apple is making the best gains in the home. It was the non-business editions that Microsoft delayed.

Microsoft = business
Apple = home

I think you are seeing the "peaceable" split between the two.

Umm, yeah they do, they're called gamers. The selection of games in windows is FAR superior to that on the Mac. It's the only reason I have a PC and a high end one at that. If this means I no longer have to do that I'll b every happy and have a little more money in the bank to boot.

Chupa, Microsoft is not General Motors, they are not laying off thousands of staff.:p

But the writting is on the wall there, and 5 years is the absolute horizon...there is no future beyond that and like many things in the business world, once the end is in sight, things move to closure very quickly.

EDIT- something else to consider. They are only "supporting" Office for Mac. They are not developing new features for Office Mac. It would be a whole lot cheaper to support Office from India than from The Bay Area....

Not like anyone is going to read this...

While I don't really understand why Apple did it (if I was in their shoes I wouldn't have). I do think this changes a lot of things.

Apple can't decide what kind of computer company they are....

Are they a consumer electronics company? iPods, HiFi, etc.

Are they a software company? "What makes a Mac a Mac isn't the processor under the hood. It's Apple's elegant operating system, OS X, which won't see major changes for 18 months, and the company's stylish hardware designs, which it will continue to produce." - Walt Mossberg

Are they a hardware company not caring what runs on their machines? Boot Camp

Apple can't seem to make up it's mind lately, tackling every angle possible hoping that they will ride this transition out. I am more and more hating this idea of windows on my mac. It's as if Steveo said, "i will let a crap OS run on my elegant machine." This is a total drop in quality control. I can hear the tech support calls already. "Welcome to DSL help" "yeah, i have a mac running windows, i need help." "uhhhhh...."

Think about the RDF that has been spun in the history of apple...
1. x86 sucks... or not
2. 3.0ghz in 1 year... or not
3. We don't believe in mobile video... here's and iPod with Video for you
4. We won't help people install windows on mac... or maybe we will
5. Two button mice are lame... but mighty mice rule!
6. Pssh, integrated graphics blow... or not, check out the new mini!

Just wait until the tablet pc comes out, and the iPhone comes out. Apple is going to get overexposed.

Think of all the game developers for Mac that this is going to put out of business. Why would I buy a mac game if I can just install windows and play it years before it comes out on mac? Why are game developers going to work with apple to improve OpenGL performance?

Im also worried about photoshop (and other cross platform) performance. What happens when native XP Photoshop runs faster than OS X Photoshop on the same hardware? I sure hope Apple is ready to go head to head in the performance sector of their os.

isn't vista being released in November of '07? Could that mean that Apple will support Vista as well?

Vista uses BIOS, so I can't see any reason why Boot Camp couldn't boot up Vista.

I think that's a cushion to put the hounds off the scent. I thought the vascillating Vista venture was delayed until just after the 1st of the year (2007), not till November. Vista support hasn't been a question according to the Boot Camp documentation provided by Apple so far.

I am still waiting to read some info from someone who has played Halo 2 or some other PC only graphics intensive game on their Intel iMac.

Just to be clear, Apple is not supporting XP here. This only gives users the ability to run Windows at their own risk, with no guarantee whatsoever, and with no technical support at all. That's why one of the reasons why they're calling it beta. If anything goes wrong, we told you this is a beta, you're own your own.

it's going to be a lot easier to get answers to specific questions by posting a thread in the Windows on Mac subforum

Not entirely sure what that even has to do with any comment I made.

Normally, true. And IF the MBU was a for-profit division of M$ I'm positive M$ would have pulled the plug the day Jobs said Apple was switching to Intel rather than have to practically recode Office as a UB. But MBU is not a for-profit division of M$. It's only reason for existence is to keep the Mac OS afloat to keep the Feds away. I'm sure M$ doesn't like tossing money to MBU now anymore than it will 5 years from now. But it's a burden it must bear. That doesn't mean MBU is going to grow. Clearly it's not. But it's not going away either unless Apple's market share dramatically increases in the next 5 years....and then M$ may not want to dismantle the MBU.

I've been reading quotes like this since Apple announced the switch to Intel (about comparing benchmarks), but your post on the day that Apple released Boot Camp made me look at this in a whole new light. I'd always thought about comparing benchmarks on "similar" hardware from Dell, HP, etc. It's now going to be trivial to run both Windows and OS X native versions of apps on Mac hardware with an Apple-provided solution to do so.

When Photoshop goes native on Intel macs, we will definitely see Macworld magazine and others provide benchmarks for the OS X and Windows versions on Mac hardware.
