So our school system ordered over 20 iMacs in the middle of August. it appears that not only have the processors changed, but the price of the 20" in less too.

What is Apple's return policy? I am ready to send them all back.

Have you called your account rep?

You may notice that the problem is that the configuration doesn't seem to give the option for 1x1Gb. In the AU or UK stores, at least.

That's very odd - nor do the US or the DK store have this option any more. I'm pretty certain that I saw the 1x1GB option two days ago - has Apple removed it ??

BTW I think it's only important to have matched memory on two equal blocks when the graphics has to access main memory, i.e. only on the basic 17-incher that uses Intel graphics.

woo hooo,

ordered a 24"er 2gig with wireless kbd and MM.

They still have the iPod rebate here in the uk.
Also asked about the 1stick ram issue and the sales guy told me that one 1gig stick and an empty slot is not available, just they need to update the info box.

Should arrive on 28th....I'm off into town (london) to go play with my new toy. Also it seem the sound is now louder/clearer on the 24" model as the wattage has doubled from 12 to 24. Good enough for listening in the bedroom? Will be using as a media centre in the bedroom. EyeTv DTT.

come on apple - hurry up.

New Mac?

Lucky me, one of our computers broke down in our office. I Think I'll put mine as the replacement (Rev A mini) and pick up one of these new 20 inch iMacs at the Apple Store. Does anybody know what make hard drive Apple uses for the 500 GB Serial?

Hi Multimedia

I could not take your advice to ring straight away as, at the time of posting, it was late at night in the UK. However at 8.00 am, the time the UK online store opens, I was on the phone asking to to return my Imac under the 14 day refund policy. The person I spoke to offered me a financial settlement of £70 measly pounds to keep the Imac. As you can imagine I refused this offer and asked for a full refund as I intended to buy the Imac 24". He accepted this, offered a full refund and waived the return fees on condition I bought a new Imac.

He subsequently transferred me to sales and as a result, I am awaiting delivery of a 24" 2.16Ghz with the 256Mb 7600GT video card.

As a College lecturer I get Educational Discount so the difference in costs between to two computers is a surprising £136.00 (200? USD)

I am now extremely happy again.

Fantastic. But you forgot to write us this. We all need to know experiences like this. It helps others with similar situations to have the courage to insist on being able to return and upgrade with no penalty. Thanks and congratulations.

I told you so! :D

Apple Has Lately Been Using Seagate Drives • Seagate Bought Maxtor

Seagate. Apple used to use Maxtor quite a bit too. But since Seagate bought Maxtor about 6 months ago, Apple's been using Seagate all the time now I think.

regarding the Macworld speed tests on the other thread

If you've seen the test results on the other thread regarding the Core 2 Duo's on the 20 inch iMac, I would suggest that this gives further grist to the mill regarding the higher specced versions of these machines being perfectly good for Pro Graphics.

Give yourself the 7600 card, and maybe the 2.33 chip and the differences between this 24 inch machine and the MacPro 2.66 dual won't be that much. I think that's pretty impressive to be honest and doesn't leave any "gap" in Apple's range. It's going to be quite fast enough for me and we can spend the savings on a really nice piece of furniture for our new offices!

Look at those speeds, there's probably only going to be about a 15 sec difference between the Pro and the 24 inch iMac on the PS suite test. Anyway as soon as I sort out the memory issue with the suppliers I'm talking to in London, our order is in. And I'll let you all know!!

Well it depends on what you're looking for. In terms of raw performance there is a big gap, with the MacPro having over twice the integer and floating point grunt (according to Apples own website benchmarks). The fact that we're not seeing this in real-world applications is more to do with the applications themselves rather than the relative power of the machines I would imagine.

In terms of sheer expandability then there is a big gap, with the iMac being almost unexpandable but the Mac Pro being incredibly expandable. Each machine is being aimed at different types of markets, with iMac users being those who simply want an AIO computer and to leave it at that. For those who don't want an AIO or want some expandability the only option is the Mac Pro but a lot of these customers don't need/want a workstation with quad-cores either.

I'm one of those customers. As it stands Apple don't have a product in my market sector, unfortunately. The iMacs are lovely machines, just not for me. =(

I have put my 20" Intel iMac up for sale, (the 24" is exactly what I need) and one guy is interested, but offering about $100 less than what I think it´s worth.
The good thing for me is that I didn´t pay the VAT when I bought it as it´s for my home office.
So I´m not loosing much, how much would you guys say my iMac has lost in value in %?

Hi all

sorry for not informing you all of the outcome of my dilemma. I am new to all this and it appeared to me that the conversation had moved on from my situation.

The good news is that my 20" Imac is being collected for return on Monday and my new 24" Imac should be with me by 28th September.

Overall, a good experience with Apple UK.

Regards

24" imac arrived los angeles

just picked up my 24" imac from our local fedex station--(it wouldn't have been delivered until monday otherwise)---wow, from shanghai to alaska to indianapolis to hollywood in only two days! will try to post pics later...:D :p ;)

Hey all, im ordering a 24" with a 7600GT at the end of the month. I want to watch normal Cable TV and i was wondering what is the best priced tv tuner that works for macs? I live in Canada and the 150$ U.S posted one is over my budget.

Also for gaming using a Widescreen does OSX give you the option of non stretch if the game doesnt support a widescreen resolution?

Pics for sure... box ... unit... everything... mine is still not shipping till the 15th.

Crikey! You go on holiday for a week and all hell breaks loose! Still, a 24" iMac is pretty awesome - that's a serious bit of kit. And at long last dual core across the line with the bumped minis. :)

I think you forgot the word System ... (like a system built around a Conroe , or a system built around a Merom).

Take a look at this NONSENSE, please :D :

MEROM 2.33 : 260 SYSMARK

"The ASUS Z96Js is outfitted with a 15.4" widescreen display with a 1280 x 800 native resolution, driven by a 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1600. Our test system was outfitted with two 512MB DDR2-667 memory modules. Unfortunately the ASUS notebook doesn't allow adjustment of memory timings so they were left at the SPD defaults of 5-5-5-15. We installed a 7200RPM Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 (60GB SATA) hard drive in the notebook, but regardless of what we use, 2.5" disk speeds are still nowhere near what's available on today's 3.5" desktop drives.

The motherboard in the Z96Js features Intel's 945PM chipset and a 479-pin Socket-M interface. Since both of our test CPUs were Socket-M processors, all we had to do was get a BIOS update to support Merom and swap the CPUs to compare the two. "

stop being retarded, that isn't even a valid comparison. One has way more ram, a faster hardrive, and other things that affect the system score.

Yet you can't afford a $150 for a TV Tuner? Dude, you spread yourself pretty thin to buy that thing. Hope the ramen tastes good.
