Mh... maybe visit the EyeTV website for some supported cards, although you'll need EyeTV too. Hmm... Macs aren't cheap. I think there was another project though, an open source solution. Don't recall their name though.

$150 Is Cheap • You Need A Digital Tuner Anyway • Not That Old Analog Tuner

$150 is incredibly cheap. You are cheap if you don't think so. Get used to paying more for everything Mac. The EyeTV hybrid tuner is not only inexpensive at $150 it is also both analog and digital.

Previous EyeTV 500 Digital & 200 Analog Tuners were $250 for digital or analog only each - IE $500 for what is now only $150.

I'm considering the EyeTV Hybrid too. I like that it's analog and digital.

Death of the Nano deal on Imacs

I attempted to order a new 20" Imac today and take advantage of the educational discount for a free Nano. It turns out that Apple only intends to honor that deal for core duo machines, not Core 2 Duo. Since core duo Imacs are nol longer available, the rebate is over as of Weds past for anyone wanting an Imac. Still good for Power mac and laptops. Their choice, but it would have been nice if they sent me one email noting this to counter the 6 emails they sent hawking the deal.

2. On a 64-bit Mac, Leopard also runs 32-but apps at full speed and without emulation. Most apps don't need 64 bits, most apps are 32-bit, and so 32-bit apps should not be second-class citizens. In Vista, they are. Vista 64-bit requires emulation (a layer called Windows on Windows) to run 32-bit apps. That's right--this means MOST Windows apps will run in emulation under Vista. Unless you give up all 64-bit support. And worst of all:

Hi nagromme,

Thanxx 4 taking the time to explain the above. I wonder if you can tell me if Leopard will run full speed on the iMac when it has a 64-bit cpu and a 32-bit motherboard?

Thanxx 4 ur patience.

Seagate. Apple used to use Maxtor quite a bit too. But since Seagate bought Maxtor about 6 months ago, Apple's been using Seagate all the time now I think.

Thanks, had no idea that Seagate bought Maxtor, out of touch.

the computer is wonderful...silent...speedy...the screen is the brightest i have seen on a mac so far...i had to turn down the brightness a little more than usual. but it is a great screen imho
wow, looks cool. Is that background real? How cool is that?!
What kind of speakers are these? They look a bit bigger than the usual computer speakers (not big enough for me though :D ).

yes the background is real, there is actually glass between the imac and the pool---kinda looks like it's outside though doesn't it? tee hee...
the speakers are from klipsch ifi...they may look small, but with the sub they're plenty loud! the ifi is kinda lacking on the way high end of the treble though...but not as bad as the ipod hifi (which has good bass and volume but very poor high end and questionable stereo field ability)

Hehe, yeah, looked like it was outside. But like that it's very cool too :) Although I imagine that it isn't too ergonomic if the background is bright... but ok, if the backlight of iMac is very bright too it's ok I guess :D

Ah, Klipsch. Somehow I've imagined that, though you can't get Klipsch here. But I prefer to have two speakers without a subwoofer... mine have a pretty good low end too (at -3db 40 Hz). But then they are rather big and require a dedicated stereo amp.

Looks very nice. I just sold the iMac in my sig (5 months old) to get my hands on the 24".
When I get it I won´t need to upgrade for a looong time. (Have to make sure I stay out of MR not to get tempted though;) )

I'm coveting the 24", but I'm wondering about the RAM prices. The first extra gigabyte costs you $175, but if you wanted to add 2GB, it's $750...?

How does that work? Is there a cheaper way to safely get to 3GB?

Also, does all that extra screen real estate put real demands on the CPU? Would the 20" be zippier than the 24" because the latter is huffing and puffing to keep up with the greater resolution etc?

Sorry if these are n00b questions, but, uh, I'm a bit of a n00b.

Thanks!

That works because there are 2 RAM slots on the Logic Board. 2GB DDR2 DIMMs are incredibly expensive! a 2GB Samsung DIMM from OWC is $729 and you would have to DIY.

I wouldn't say the CPU, probably more demand on the GPU- that's why they seem to have a bigger GPU in the 24", upgradeable to an even better one.

I'm tempted to do the same, and my iMac is older than yours was (but I must admit it's not really THAT old).

I am about to order a 24 inch imac, should I pay the extra and get the better graphics card ?
I will be useing mainly for iphoto, imovie, and all the usual stuff.

Unless you're going to be doing some 3D work/gaming, I wouldn't worry about needing to upgrade the video card. Sounds like the existing one will suit you just fine. You'll probably get a bigger bang for your buck by upgrading your RAM more than the video card.

Thanks for the reponce,

I am in Australia and it seems that it is cheaper to upgrade Ram through apple then other sources. Is this the same in other parts of the world ?

Cheers

No, not usually. ;) Apple usually charges a premium for their RAM, and using 3rd party vendors is much more cost-effective. Here in North America at least it always seems like if you buy RAM through Apple you're paying through the nose. Can't speak regarding Oz though of course. ;)

What exactly are you looking at in terms of a RAM upgrade through Apple? Just curious what the details are... Because keep in mind that an upgrade from 1 GB to 2 GB (as an example) is not simply the price difference between the two options - you should factor in the fact that the initial cost of the 2x512 MB RAM sticks is built into the cost of the machine. So technically, you are buying two 1 GB sticks of RAM from Apple as an "upgrade", however do not get to keep the two 512 MB sticks which initially came with your machine. Follow me?

The upgrade at the Apple Canada Store is $210 from 1 GB to 2 GB. Two 1 GB SODIMMs from Crucial (the supplier most people here seem to trust) are $135 USD ea on sale through the RamSeeker link, plus $15 shipping to Canada. Convert that to Canadian, and you have $315 for the two 1 GB DIMMs. Now, sell your 512 MB SODIMMs on eBay for $40 ea (the best price anyone got on one sold on eBay in the last month was $42 CDN), pay the eBay listing and sales fees, and you get $65 back. So, you've now paid $250 and wasted a bunch of your time for the RAM you could have got from the Apple store for $210, with free installation and no hassles for service if there's a problem.

In the past, the Apple store was not the place to upgrade your RAM, but that has clearly changed.

Beauty. Who makes those speakers? Is there a sub-woofer on the floor that comes with them?

Congrats! Now on to page 41 and post 1001.

he said. That is http://www.klipsch.com/products/details/ifi.aspx . Specs look quite good too, and Klipsch are supposed to be pretty good. Rather expensive though (but so is the iPod HiFi, and though it surprised me a bit, in that they actually sound rather ok, I think they are something like BOSE... sound quality is ok, but they are waaaaaay to expensive. I expect the Klipsch to be better).

Edit: Yay, post 1001 :D

Klipsch iFi 2.1 System Looks Great But At The Price Of a 5.1 System Seems A Bit Steep

 $400 MSRP. That's pretty steep for what could be a 5.1 Dolby Digital Amp with dedicated speakers - only bigger. I guess there's something to be said for how compact it is. Wonder how it sounds?

iFi iPod Solutions

"In tune with the way people enjoy their favorite music today, Klipsch designed the iFi™ system to make the popular Apple® iPod® experience sound better than ever.

Features
• 3.5-inch aluminum woofer
• 0.75-inch titanium dome compression driver with MicroTractrix Horn

Very cool. From Indianapolis Indiana home of the Payton Manning Colts. ;)
