Does the Protection Plan cover accidentals? And do you think it is worth the money to get a protection plan?

The protection plan does not cover accidental damage or abuse. It is most definitely worth the money to get the protection plan.

I'm not saying that your machine will break down during its lifetime, but I assure you that if it does, the repair costs will be more than the protection plan costs.

Apple uses a tiered pricing scheme for laptop repairs. Even the Tier-1 repairs (eg: kb replacement) cost more than the service plan does.

As a former certified Apple technician, I absolutely guarantee that the service plan is worth every penny. (seeing people's faces recoil in terror when I quoted Apple's pricing for replacing their dead Logic Board or LCD convinced me of that).

This is my first mac, and I am already looking at what i am doing first when i get it...change the wallpaper and start installing some apps...making that list now! :)

cant wait for bootcamp and parallels.....i want to try all of that out..so excited! :)

Tell me about it. I'm probably going to do a fresh installation when I receive my MMBP and get rid of all the stuff I don't need. Now I just need to get my sister to cough up for the laptop (ThinkPad T43) I sold her (at a *very* decent discounted family price, I must add) so I can grab myself a 2407WFP from Dell.

I ordered a 17" (stock) and threw in an ipod since i didn't have to upgrade anything on the laptop. My wife will be happy now as we have been "sharing" her Black MacBook.

do you guys think i should just go ahead and buy a macbook then? i would love a MBP, but its to expensive.. im just a highschool student, and the black would really be great.

If you get a MacBook and you're on a budget, don't get the black one--an identically-configured white one is $150 cheaper....

only 5200 RPM drive?

No 7200 rpm BTO option?

Is it a space issue inside? Because why would I want a "pro" model notebook with sub-par HD performance. Or have they determined that the 5400 RPM drive is 39% faster than the previous model? Maybe that helps the battery but performance wise it does not make it a "pro" model in my opinion. 2GB/3GB BTO is nice though.

well, for one thing, I noticed that for the 15"s even though they have a bigger hard drive, there is no longer an option for a 7200 rpm drive. This means syncing up files between an internal and an external will be slower again.
Hardly. The limit for external HD access is the USB or Firewire connection, not drive speed, and that's offset by the new FW800 (if you have a FW800 external drive).

Or reading big files in intensive applications will be slower, somewhat bolstering the 39% speed increase.
That's true, if by "bolstering" you mean the opposite.

You mean from all those mysterious newbie accounts that we'll never see again? :p

Oh, mysterious, eh? Are you suggesting people who only post on here very intermittenly have some ulterior motive?

I think I speak for the typical "newbie" here in that I've read thousands of these posts, and I don't feel the need to dogpile in 99% of the threads because my points/questions/comments have been covered by somone else who posts 15 times a day or so.

I'll buy the C2D notebook probably just before the price breaks at Xmas. I'm hoping there will be a MacBook, too, so I can compare it with the MBP. Proofs of Purchase will not be shown online, but between me, my wife, and Mr. Jobs.

I have, cars are mostly upgraded once every year.

Yep. You know when the car updates are coming, and you know what you loose when you drive off the lot.

That being said, unless you are planning on flipping your computer every 6 months, it shouldn't make any difference.

Still don't like it?... lease.

Are we getting 64bit now or that won't happen till Santa Rosa, cos if not now i might as well save myself 300 smackers and get the low end 15"er.

I know its probably been asked before but i dont remember seeing it

Best time to buy MBP/MB is after Leopard release

I think the best time to purchase a MB/MBP would be after the release of Leopard because I don't know how they will make Time Machine work with the current hard drives. Will these hard drives be partitioned equally? The 200 gig HD might mean 100 gig for general usage, and the other 100 gig is set aside for Time Machine. I'm no computer guy, but to me, that would be the only way to make that work. Its like constant backing up of all your data, and you'll need lots of space for that. For desktops, it would be easier because you can add an external HD, but for laptops, it's a pain to lug around an external one, and to have to plug one in everytime you use your MB/MBP would be silly.

I like the MB's because they have user replaceable HD's, which means you can continue to update the space, and speed of your HD. I think the MBP should get this option too.

Anyways, just thinking outloud. But personally, I am waiting for a new MB because of the convenient HD and RAM accessibility, which is more important to me than the super fast processor, cuz faster processor means hotter computer.

I am suggesting exactly that. It doesn't mean that it applies to you, but it's very common on here for people to create accounts just to complain about what Apple still doesn't offer. Then, when new models are released, regardless if the specs meet the whiner's requirements, they simply disappear. I've seen it over and over and over and over again.

Yeah, I doubt anyone has ever made profit from buying a computer. Sometimes however, you are lucky and buy a computer that will loose its value slower than others.

2.16GHz Core Duo 15" for $1599

Not that it would matter....

But I see in the Apple Store refresh that they are selling the top line model for $1,599.00 This is a great price for a 15" laptop with 256MB VRAM, 100Gb hard drive, and some other features. Although, one would wonder if for $400 more that the $1999 MacBook Pro is worth jumping too.

I just need a laptop as a second machine, and to sell my 17" Powerbook and pay a couple hundred more for a MacBook Pro seems like a smart idea.

Ever bought a car?

There is not update to a car when frome one day to the other you suddenly get to double your mileage, get a 30% bigger engine, 50 % more trunk space, etc. for the same money.

I am not talking about the fact that as soon as you buy something it looses some of its value. The same is true for the C2D MBP.

I am complaining that if you went to the store yesterday and today - todays money suddenly buys you so much more value that you feel ripped off by yesterdays prices...

Hmm.............,

Macbook Pro 15", 2GB RAM, 120 MB drive - $2174

Black Macbook, 2GB RAM, 120MB drive - $2199

WHAT's WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?????

Um, the fact that they're not 120 MB hard drives? I think that may be whats wrong :D

Sometimes the regular, such as yourself, just need to disappear.

2.33GHz Standard Top, Return Of FW800 On 15", Missing HD Bay

Morning all and congrats to everyone who waited. Definately was worth it when you look at those 2.16GHz Core Duo base comparisons. Way faster not just a little faster.

2GB Standard on both top models is really huge and generous. 'Bout time they did that on these expensive mobiles.

The MagSafe Airline Power Adapter is a pretty big and welcome deal too.

Almost looks like a processor drop in. I expected 2.33GHz standard. Glad to see that. The return of the FW800 port to the 15" is welcome news. Now the 15" model is on par with the old PowerBook G4 port layout.

Anyone know how well the 4200rpm 200GB HD performs? Could feel just as responsive as faster smaller drives due to plate density no?

Don't see any sign of the MacBook easy access HD Bay design. That's a big disappointment to me. No change to the screen resolutions offered either. Thought this time they might offer a 1920x1200 screen option on the 17" at least - even if we had to pay more for it.

I'm pretty sure that's how Apple intends Time Machine to be used, though (on an external hard drive - or over a network/the internet)

Underpriced refurbs?

Is it just me, or does the previous generation models seem awfully cheap on the Refurb page?

I just ordered a 2.13 GHz 1 GB 256 MB RAM 15" model for $1599. OK, it doesn't have FW800, but it's a steal compared to the new base model that's the same except it only has 128 MB RAM and FW800.

<edit>

Oh, the new ones have bigger HD's, too. Still seems pretty cheap for the refurb. Almost in the MacBook (non-Pro) price range.
