Hmm. The 15" is defaulting to matte, but the 17" defaults to the glossy being selected for me... though the sidebar shows matte (or rather doesn't mention glossy unless I select matte and go back to glossy).

Despite that it does say "At no extra charge, you can choose a glossy widescreen display..." and the tech specs say "...optional glossy widescreen display"

Confusing...

Exactly, im gonna go out on a limb and say its NOT BTO because Apple stores stock both screen types and dont ask you to go online for one or the other. Thats my theory and i'm sticking to it

Now I want to see proof of purchase from everyone who spammed the forums, tripled their post count, and disrespected those who didn't wait and bought normal core duo MBPs.

You all know who you are, and I am giving you 3 weeks to make this happen!

 :D ;)

You mean from all those mysterious newbie accounts that we'll never see again? :p

Solid upgrade....

...and close to ordering one. Upgrading from my 1GHZ 12" PB. Can't wait to feel and see the difference.

But please, stop complaining about the missing upgrades. It looks like everytime Apple puts out a solid upgrade, some people whine about 'missing(?)' changes. Some people want to justify it for themselves not to order one, I guess? Why even commenting?

What's wrong with this picture???

Hmm.............,

Macbook Pro 15", 2GB RAM, 120 MB drive - $2174

Black Macbook, 2GB RAM, 120MB drive - $2199

WHAT's WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?????

...and if you were smart, you'd forget about using the internal drive for audio irrespective of its speed. To me, the whole 5400 vs. 7200 RPM question is not pertinent to pro audio applications, where you are strongly advised to use an external disk. A dedicated disk (NOT partition) should always be used for streaming audio.

Well, I guess I'm not smart then.

Clearly I accept the advantages of an external HD, but I don't accept that as a reason for accepting a 2nd gen machine that's got a slower HD than a first gen one.

Hey, I am also going from a 1GHz 12" PB. I keep reading that the Core2 is on par with the G5 in many areas. That said, my dual 2.3GHz G5 w/2GB RAM is smokin' fast as is. Can't wait to see how this laptop runs.

They havent updated pricing yet. There was a time the 15 MBP cost more than a 17" initially

CD or C2D?
Yesterdays investment is losing suddenly 30% of its value. Apple should really address this by lowering prices before such an update...
Ever bought a car?

Anyone happen to notice that Apple's refurb store now has the 15" 2GHz CD model price down to $1449. Heck of a deal for those who waited, but don't want to pay up for a C2D model if they don't feel it's worth it. :D

Indeed. I guess we should expect an MB update shortly... Next tuesday?

AFAIK Core 2 blows the doors off a G5.

Mine is now ordered... just gotta wait 7-10 days to ship, then 2-3 days till i get it :( its all waiting!

I got stock 17", was gonna get a HP Ethernet printer too but not enough money in the bank!

Just gotta sell my Powermac G5 now, anyone want it?

well, for one thing, I noticed that for the 15"s even though they have a bigger hard drive, there is no longer an option for a 7200 rpm drive. This means syncing up files between an internal and an external will be slower again. Or reading big files in intensive applications will be slower, somewhat bolstering the 39% speed increase.

Is the Protection Plan Worth it?

Does the Protection Plan cover accidentals? And do you think it is worth the money to get a protection plan?

Thanks

I was thouroughly unimpressed with the update today. I got the refurb offered at $1599 that comes with a faster processor, and more RAM and graphics memory, for my girlfriend. I'm still waiting on the Macbook for myself (I do mainly music/field recording, she does art).

Thanks

If by "Protection Plan" you mean Apple Care then no it does not cover accidental damage.

In stores vs shipping

I'll be in ny next week, and I was planning to get a new MBP, so the release is perfect timming x me! Do you think they will have them in stock in the apple stores next week (soho, 5thave) or I need to order it on the online site and wait the 2/4 days?? Any help?? Thanx!

With Apples special TV thingy coming out next year (Steve Jobs announced at WWDC) all Macs really need wireless faster than G so it makes sense to upgrade them all to "n".
They don't need faster than G for streaming video, they need a better implementation of G. It's fast enough but not optimized for wireless video streaming.

I have 1.5Mb/s DSL, and I can almost start watching iTunes video downloads as they arrive. I just have to wait 10 minutes for enough to be buffered, to be able to watch a 45 minute show seamlessly. Wireless G peak speed, or even sustained speed, is much faster than this. 2Mb/s would be fast enough for immediate viewing.

I'm guessing that's why the iTV is due to be released in January. Apple is probably working on their wireless G code rather than waiting for N to be ratified.

This is my first mac, and I am already looking at what i am doing first when i get it...change the wallpaper and start installing some apps...making that list now! :)

cant wait for bootcamp and parallels.....i want to try all of that out..so excited! :)

Since I couldn't find it posted yet: not only does the 15" model come with 1 GB standard now, it's also in an 'upgrade friendly' way: 1 x 1 GB instead of 2 x 512. So, if you want to upgrade your memory later, you can do it fully and are not stuck with an extra module.

That's what I like about it, personally.

I have had a TiG4-400 which to be honest is the best Mac I have ever owned. Got abused too. Currently have a Ti-867 running OSX.4, and depending on current workflows I will either get a 15" C2D MBP in the next 2 months or just wait for the Santa Rosa version and go all 64 bit out of the box.

What I want to know is when folks GET their C2D MBP when they install WinXP under Bootcamp, if it recognizes an 802.11n card as being already installed (in anticipation of iTV and X.5).
