Ok, I was going to hold off and purchase tomorrow via the Uni network. I phoned up the HE edu number (to double check discounted prices for the new models) and spoke to a very nice guy, who said that if I ordered with him today/tomorrow he could try and get it shipped with priority despite the 4 day lead time.

Rang him back (he wasn't availible) and left a message. He just rang back I and placed an order for the entry level MBP with Apple Care and a MM/Keyboard. He still reckoned that it would take up to 2 weeks due to the fact that it's just been released. Anyway, I'm pretty thrilled, my first real Apple computer (had an ibook a few years ago I never made proper use of), I can't wait.

It seems to me that Apple play games with their users, just a little bit.

Unless I'm mistaken, 1st gen MBP had 7200 HD option but no FW800.

This time the FW800 gets put back but the 7200 option is taken away, with the moral being "buy a 17" if you need both of these features">

I'm the same as one of the previous posters, for my audio app (Ableton Live) there's no way I'd splash that sort of cash on a MBP with a 5400 drive.

Oh well, if my PB gives up the ghost, I'll have to tgo for a 17" (which I don't wwant to do) or buy a PC. Failing that, Im a-waiting for Santa Rosa.

ableton live runs fine with 5400 drives...even when playing live and warping mp3s on the fly! have you had bad experience with those drives or something? im an ableton live user you see...

Arrrrgh!!!! I was so hoping for a redesign. I can't take the low angle of the screen tilt!

Christ, now do I wait for Jan or will it be another 9 months for the next revision?

Well... Went ahead and orderd the 15" 2.33GHz model, so I'll hand the other MBP over to the wife instead of getting her a MB. She'll be happy.

Rather sneaky what Apple did with the RAM, upping it to 2GB standard on the two 2.33GHz models and leaving the price to upgrade from 1GB (lowest option) to 2GB on the lower model at $158. Essentially we're forced to buy the RAM from Apple... Because with current 1GB modules being about $110 or so from another vendor, it's not worth going somewhere else for a second 1GB stick when the few extra $$ from Apple will get you a matched pair of Samsungs. Same with the HD set to 120GB... I could order a 160GB from another vendor for $175 and spend an hour or more of my life swapping them out and then use or sell the 120GB for something else. Or I could just spend the $90 and get the 160GB in the first place... Hmmm..

Anyway, ordered this morning at 7:07 Cuppertino time.

MBP C2D 15" 2.33GHz
2GB RAM
160GB HD
Yeeehaaaaaw!

Overall, a decent upgrade - the faster DL burners and FW800 on the 15" models is a nice surprise. No real reason it took this long though... The only thing I can figure is Apple had to stockpile systems to meet their anticipated demand.

I just want to know a couple of things.

Does this kill the Powerbook G5 threads forever?

Does this kill the Core 2 Duo Powerbook coming Tuesday threads forever?

Please!

This release seems to be consistent with my comments on timing and features and addressed the main features people asked for, larger HD, dual layer DVD drive, airplane power, FW800 and of courde Core 2 Duo with maximum addressable memory of the "old" memory controller.

This means we can expect a super-duper Mac Book Pro in about 6 months or so! Increased memory, 64 bit OS, possibly even replaceable HD. There. I started it myself!

Apparently the 160GB HDD's performance is on par with the 100GB 7200RPM and a tad faster than the 120GB??

i believe that was JUST on the 160GB Hitachi drive with perpendicular recording (i do not have the model number on me.)

not sure if this counts on whatever is in the C2D MBP or not.

As expected really. Shame about no graphics card update, but it's better than no upgrade at all.

Now next year, we want HD screens Apple ;)

well i need to get one. but yeah, i feel bad they didnt update with a new graphics chip.

aside from that, the new HD capacity, firewire 800. more ram.

it's a good deal.

...and if you were smart, you'd forget about using the internal drive for audio irrespective of its speed. To me, the whole 5400 vs. 7200 RPM question is not pertinent to pro audio applications, where you are strongly advised to use an external disk. A dedicated disk (NOT partition) should always be used for streaming audio.

I want a 13-inch model still!

I don't want to give up my 12-inch Powerbook until there is another small form factor aluminium notebook.

I apologize for the big letters. I'm a mac newb and this will be my first mac. I have been waiting for this new macbook to buy and whats funny is that I walked into the Mac Store yesterday, the guy new everything about the product but seemed a little too clueless about the product cycle. He was like.. "uh, could be next February but no one ever knows". I asked how releases are typically handled for macs. He replies "I'm not really sure. It's anyone's guess". So I knew he was trying to avoid talking about it.

There are no true "cycles". New machines just appear out of nowhere. The only "cycle' one can count on is Macworld in Jan, always new stuff there.

The staff at the store have no prior knowledge of upcoming product. They learn about the new product when we do [once Apple updates their website]

I bet the next major revision is next April~JuneMay when the 802.11n and other Santa Rosa components are complete and available. In January, we may see a speed bump again - engineering samples of 2.66GHz Meroms are in the pipeline, but Intel doesn't have them on their official product sheet. I would bet that at MWSF, with the upcoming HD options from Hitachi and Seagate (200GB 5400rpm, 120GB 7200rpm), we'll see config updates to the MBP... But nothing major, just like they did a few months back when they dropped the 1.83GHz MBP as the low model and rearranged a few HD options.

i suppose you're right. thank god both models now have fw800 then!

Now I want to see proof of purchase from everyone who spammed the forums, tripled their post count, and disrespected those who didn't wait and bought normal core duo MBPs.

You all know who you are, and I am giving you 3 weeks to make this happen!

 :D ;)

Ordering online will probably get it to you quicker... You could potentially pay lower tax depending on where you live vs. buying at a store.

I don't foresee the stores getting them until a few days. They always lag behind. However, if you are wanting a great deal on a Core Duo, this would be the time to get it.

Bad experiences? Not bad as such. The thing is I got my Powerbook 2 years ago (with a 5400 drive) only to find that I was SEVERELY limited with Live, my machine was smoked by PCs that cost a fraction of the price.

All the stuff i've read on Ableton's forum has been advising people to go for 7200 drives and there are plenty of 15" PC lappies that do have that option. So I would be loathe to pay out that sort of money for a machine that has a hard drive that is slower than those on PCs.

That said, I make music on my slow-ass powerbook, so I guess it's all relative.

only one thing missing

ANY change from the default spec is BTO (or CTO). The tech specs pages says:

"15.4-inch (diagonal) TFT display, support for millions of colors; optional glossy widescreen display"

Sounds like glossy is BTO to me.

Hmm. The 15" is defaulting to matte, but the 17" defaults to the glossy being selected for me... though the sidebar shows matte (or rather doesn't mention glossy unless I select matte and go back to glossy).

Despite that it does say "At no extra charge, you can choose a glossy widescreen display..." and the tech specs say "...optional glossy widescreen display"

Confusing...
