I haven't read all the messages, but I'm wondering....
How many of you that have been waiting and whining actually took the plunge this morning? I can say for a fact that I did. Just curious to see how many people are still saying, "...But, the MBP still lacks a male genitalia insert port."
Cynical, you say? Yes, I've been on these forums long enough to see people constantly complain for the next best thing, even on new release days.

Anyway, here's my order again (because I'm ***** excited) :D :

MacBook Pro 15-inch Glossy Widescreen Display
2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Apple USB Modem
Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
160GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
Accessory Kit
SuperDrive 6x (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

I did. Stock 2.16 model because I want to get it ASAP. Wishing it ships today or tomorrow so I can have it this weekend.

It's not: Consider the 160GB 5400 RPM SATA drive from NewEgg.com. Then sell your "old" drive on eBay for $90-$120 or buy an ext'l case and have a backup drive for TimeMachine :D

Or don't, since upgrading your HD will void your warranty (in a Macbook Pro) and they are very tricky to open and even more tricky to get closed again!
Not worth it in my opinion

I tried "setting up" a new macbook pro, and found that the 3gb limit is a combination of one 2gb and a 1gb ram module. i did some searching and found that kingston sells a 2gb ram module and was wondering if they i could get the ram module for cheaper than what apple was selling the upgrade for. i got the part number, it's KTA-MB667/2G but at thier store, it's around $750 for one!

crucial and new egg don't have these 2gb modules. any other sources i should be looking at for this new ram piece?

Get an Apple dealer to do it and the warranty is fine. Spendy though :)

Joshwest, fantastic find...I'm willing to say that the CD 2.16 refub is a fantastic deal...256MB graphics to boot. I'll look at benchmarks in the next couple days and see if the CPU is worth this revision, otherwise, Core Duo and additional GPU memory and mad $$ savings is a great call.

Specs? if the last gen i'm interested !!:D

If its not, i have the last gen PB and its maxed out (2GB/100GB 7200RPM) and would be willing to sell it to you

Sorry, but I have to disagree with the people saying that you HAVE to use an external drive for audio. As I said in a previous post, i make music on my Powerbook with 1 gig RAm and 5400 internal drive.

I accept that for MAXIMUM track count and ASOLUTE BEST performance then yes, an external drive would be better. But I don't write music like that. I was simply stating that I was disappointed with this regression in maximum available HD speed moving from 1st gen to 2nd gen.

If you do alot of video editing you should know the answer. Uncompressed 10-bit will lag on 5400rpm. Other than that, 5400 is fine, even for something like hdv or uncompressed 8-bit. You aren't capturing to your system drive, eh?

Uncompressed on an internal notebook drive is an exercise in futility. But for most common video formats (DV/HDV, DVCAM, DVCPRO, even DVCPROHD 100), These newer 100GB 7200rpm or 120/160GB 5400rpm are more than plenty fast for both capture and editing. Not sure where you figure uncompressed 8bit is OK... For 720x480 60i/30p, that's 29.6 MB/s plus any audio... How do you expect a 2.5" notebook HDD to cope with that reliably and consistantly across the entire drive surface? The 160GB 5400rpm can do it according to the specs on paper, but I'm skeptical and wouldn't want to rely on that in a pro environment under the pressure of deadlines. ...That's what the FW800 port and an external RAID is for.

Hmm.............,

Macbook Pro 15", 2GB RAM, 120 MB drive - $2174

Black Macbook, 2GB RAM, 120MB drive - $2199

WHAT's WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?????

yeah, that makes the blackbook look pretty awful. Hopefully updates to the MBs are coming soon.

My thought on this update is that C2D + more RAM + FW 800 + DL drive for the same price is great, but they really blew it on the video card. The x1600 was a decent, not great but decent, choice for the original iMacs and MBPs. I'm really disappointed that after waiting nearly 10 months to update they stuck with the same lackluster card.

If I'd been waiting for a C2D MBP I'd be a little disappointed with this. No user-replaceable HD, no mag latch, and most of all, no updated graphics. As I said when the iMacs were updated - it's not that this is in any way a bad update, it's just that when it takes 10 months (9 for the iMac) to do it, I expect more. This would have been a lot more impressive 2 months ago.

I've found it for €244 before taxes in a Belgian online store: www.redcorp.com

So I guess it should be possible to pay less than what Apple charges.

MacBook Will Get C2D In November

Squonk said:
I have read all the "what about the C2D MacBook?" posts and, well, if both the MB and MBP's have C2Ds, then the only differentiation between them would be RAM, HD, enclosure and video. I see these two models as being general consumer and professional. I think that the MB's should stay CD and push the pricing down some. If a user wants/needs more performance, then move up to a MBP. Does it make sense to have the fastest processing power in a "cheapie" case?

Yes, there is a missing model here - the 12"/13" professional model.

Is there really room in the product line for all of these?

- consumer MB - 13", CoreDual, $1099
- high end MB - 13", C3D, 100GB, black case, $1699 ???
[which also serves as the small form factor professional machine]
- professional MBP's: 15" & 17", C2D, $1999
I'm not sure what your point is. MacBook will be getting C2D in a few weeks at most. It will stay at the same speeds and prices as it is now - giving the 2GHz model Double the L2 shared cache. I don't perceive the MacBook as cheap nor consumer only. Its easy access HD bay and smaller footprint make it an excellent professional mobile Mac as well as the MBPs. You can get a 15" 2.16GHz C2D MBP for $1799 ed. So there isn't a lot of price difference.

do all states have sales tax on computer orders, or just mine? I live in PA, and its an extra $150...

I know the drill - I do quite a bit of photo work on the road as well and the image files do chew up space. But c'mon - be reasonable. First, your "archives" shouldn't be stored on your notebook for both reliability reasons, as well as space issues. That should all be stored on an external drive anyway.

But even so, if you have a 100GB drive, and have 60GB worth of system files (which is a TON) that still leaves you safely 30-40GB of disk space for RAW files. If you can put 30-40GB of RAW files on your notebook during a shoot before you can get home or to the office to back them up onto an external drive, then you take too many photos. ;)

It's not one shoot, it's that 2-week driving vacation in national parks, shooting all the way... :D I've filled up my 80GB FlashTrax before... ;)

Exactly, im gonna go out on a limb and say its NOT BTO because Apple stores stock both screen types and dont ask you to go online for one or the other. Thats my theory and i'm sticking to it

If you customize with Glossy it doesn't change the ship times which leads to guess that they aren't CTO?

Ordering online will probably get it to you quicker... You could potentially pay lower tax depending on where you live vs. buying at a store.

I believe that ordering online with expedited shipping is faster and more secure, versus going into the store and seeing if they are in stock and not sold out. If you order online, your MBP is secured.

Get The One With More Video RAM For Your Dell 30" Now Only $1279

The second one. You can upgrade a HD later but not a processor and video memory.
I overlooked the video RAM spec. emotion is right. You are going to want to drive a 30" Dell - now only $1279 - with it.

AV-I phoned Dell this morning and got a $70 credit toward my 30". Wouldn't give me the $5.60 sales tax but got $70 instead of the usual $50 they said. Me so happy. That means I got the Dell 30" including sales tax for $1395.

Any word on whether this is a true 'drop-in' or if they changed some things to address the heat issues, etc??

I'm pretty sure that Apple collects tax for all states that charge sales tax... you know technically, even if you don't pay tax to a retailer and you reside in a state that has a sales tax, you are supposed to submit "use" tax when you file your tax return... I'm sure everyone does that, right?
