I am a Powerbook G4 1.5Ghz owner. A few questions:

1: Any pros/cons to the larger screen? I am thinking I want to upgrade to the 17" from my current 15".

2: If I am a more consumer-type user, how will I see the 4200rpm drive impact performance. I really wawnt to keep my media and have a Windows partition on it, so space is definitely a factor. My current 120GB drive is maxed out!

Thanks for any input you can share.

You will regret getting Glossy. I work in the Columbia, MD Apple Store and can tell you that the glare is really really REALLY bad.:(

Really?

If you got it from a reputable seller, you might be able to refuse delivery and get a refund.

true, i think i'm ok with paying that price for a 17" mbp. Was within my budget.

That's odd... I've been to several Apple stores recently and I didn't find the glossy to be bad at all - night and day compared to windows-based laptops with glossy. Maybe your store has different lighting??

Do a search here on the forum, many seem to love their glossy. I don't like the glossy on gf's MacBook though.
edit: For instance watching a DVD movie is a pain you really need the perfect angle both in height and side to have have a good look.

Apple owes me a new MBP w/ $200 worth of HDD bumps (200GB) but I'm not sure I feel comfortable in a 4,200 RPM drive. Unfortunately, I cant afford the $300 difference to upgrade to the 2.33 version PLUS a 160GB HDD (if they would even let me).

Woe to me.
What shall I do?
You shall suck it up and deal with it... It was well known that the macbook pros would be updated around this time (I'm actually surprised it took them this long). Anyway, this is typical Apple :)

Uncompressed on an internal notebook drive is an exercise in futility. But for most common video formats (DV/HDV, DVCAM, DVCPRO, even DVCPROHD 100), These newer 100GB 7200rpm or 120/160GB 5400rpm are more than plenty fast for both capture and editing. Not sure where you figure uncompressed 8bit is OK... For 720x480 60i/30p, that's 29.6 MB/s plus any audio... How do you expect a 2.5" notebook HDD to cope with that reliably and consistantly across the entire drive surface? The 160GB 5400rpm can do it according to the specs on paper, but I'm skeptical and wouldn't want to rely on that in a pro environment under the pressure of deadlines. ...That's what the FW800 port and an external RAID is for.

Uncompressed 8-bit works in a pro environment. And I'm well aware of what the FW and external RAID are used for. Who would be foolish enough to use their system drive as their capture drive?!

15" or 17"?

Just did the math and it turns out that a stock 17" will cost me $2575.00 (with a corporate discount) vs $2391+ $119.55 MA State Tax = $2510.55 for a 15" upgraded to a 160 GB drive. Because the 17" is a stock model, I don't have to pay tax since I can get it next door in NH. So for only a $64.45 I'm getting a faster DVD and one extra USB port. I don't mention the larger screen as I'm planning to eventually get a 24" Dell monitor and the extra size of the 17" is actually a minus for those times when I'll be using MBP away from the desk.

Seems like the 17" is a no-brainer in my situation, but I don't know if I can muster enough patience to wait one extra week! :D

BTW, even though apple.com implies that the 17" model comes with a glossy screen as standard, you will be able to get either one in the B&M Apple stores (I called to check, as otherwise I would need to pay the state tax on the 17").

nice next gen upgrade, still rolling with my 2.16 CD, let's see what jump they make next time (i sold a year old G4 to get into this MBP, i won't sell a 3 month old MBP to get into a slightly upgraded model)

i want a MB with C2D
apple, come on.....update it tomorrow or latest next week :(

I'm betting they do with the MacBooks sometime soon what they did with the Mac mini. In other words, a speed bumped CD, and not a C2D.

That explains the shock that went through my system when I received my order conf and noticed I had a glossy screen. I called Apple and they changed my order to the matte, but why make the glossy standard on the 17" and then make the matte standard on the 15"

Guess you have to look over those specs every time! Just glad I caught that before I received it!:D

I'm planning on buying the base MBP model with the 128mb video card. Will that work fine with my 20in widescreen monitor? Or, do I need to get the 256mb video card version instead?

It will work just fine with 20" displays (even the 30" display for that matter). You will want the 256MB video memory if you do any significant amount of gaming or 3D though.

You guys think there is a chance the first orders will ship either today or tomorrow?

My order was completed by 7:07AM Cuppertino time... Estimated ship date is 10/31. It would be nice if Apple ships ealrier... It said 3 to 5 days on the configure page.

anyone have any past experience on what the retail stores have in stock by way of machines with upped hard drives? i think i may be looking at the 15" 2.33/2GB RAM with the 160GB drive and i would much prefer to walk into a store this week/next week and buy that config there rather than ship it.

Spec

The update is a welcome one, but there are still a few things that seem out of place to me. First, why are we only just seeing the addition of FW800 and DL DVD burner, cuz lets face it, they shouldve been in there from the start:confused:

Also, 4200RPM HDD? My wife's iBook has a 4200RPM drive, and guess what, its slow as hell. Why now do you have to purchase a 17'' MBP-C2D to get a 7200RPM HDD? I thought that wouldve been the preferable drive for prosumers.

The other thing is the 3GB memory limit. I thought they ran with dual-channel memory, wouldnt having 2GB in one slot and 1GB in the other have negative affects on performance?

Someone please clear this one up:D

I'm guessing the new MBP's have the draft .n wireless adapters in them.If they don't I'd be really surprised considering Apple's plan for the iTV come January.

As far as 1900X1200 not being High-Def ? na..

Leopard will have resolution independence which is all about Hi-Def.

The new MacBook Pro is a great machine.Get em while they last!! :)

really nice upgrade.....

but what's the deal with that 3GB(2G + 1G) ram?? not running dual channel??

Well, you can get 3GB via 1GB+2GB DIMMs and lose the dual-channel benefits because the modules aren't matched. Or you can buy 2x2GB modules from another vendor and get your dual-channel benefits, but you will only get to use a bit over 3GB. Like 3.4GB on the 128MB video memory version and 3.3GB on the 256MB video MBP. So why spend all that money to get dual-channel and an extra 350MB or so? Apple only offers 3GB rather than selling you RAM you can't use. We still need to wait for the Crestline chipset and the next major update (hopefully) before we can use more than 3GB RAM in the system.

OK....

I can top all of the whiners now that the new Merom MBPs are here.

I want the 3" MBP so I can carry it in my shirt pocket and it will magically expand to 17" with 1920x1200 when it detects the magsafe within 1/4 inch in distance.

Super Hi Q Graphics card that reads your mind and does what you think it should do.

Airport Express WiFi that detects any wireless within 500 miles and locks onto it at super speed.

Either you can use the keyboard or it will read your mind telepathically and do what you want it to do.

:D
